I’m ridiculously happy about it. Feels like raising a difficult child and finally seeing them leave home :)

@CuriouslyDifferent yours is stunning! I would love a pergola but not sure how I could fit it into my rectangular garden without it looking ridiculous.

Thank you. Our garden is long, but only 4m wide. we built a very simple one, simply to give it something to climb on/over towards the sun. Creates a walkway underneath. Can barely see it., but the passageway under, is a joy that we can’t seem to photograph.

we love Wisteria, hope to head to Japan for their gardens one day. Bucket list stuff.

So I was looking at wisteria for my front door, but had no idea that it didn't bloom straight away.

What can I use instead for instant flowers?

Honeysuckle?

Blogdog · 19/05/2023 13:10

@Needanewnamebeingwatched I can wholeheartedly recommend Rosa Banksiae Alba - it just blooms and blooms (pic of mine below). No scent unfortunately but it looks lovely.

I have purple wisteria that’s well established and on the front of my house and was there when we bought it. It’s one of my favourite things and it makes the house look absolutely beautiful.

The first spring after we moved in it flowered and was gorgeous, and then we had to prune it back quite heavily as it was coming in through the windows. The next year it really didn’t flower very much and I was worried we had been too harsh with cutting it back, but this year it definitely looks like it’s going to be in full bloom!

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 19/05/2023 16:14

Thank you both for the ideas x

My front door get probably 1 hour of sun per day.

I was going to pot the wisteria so it didn't get in the drains or foundations

Blogdog · 19/05/2023 16:31

One hour of sun a day is tricky. I think both roses and wisteria would struggle with that. A climbing hydrangea might work though - they don’t mind shade.

Am loving the beautiful pictures. We are lucky enough to have two in our garden, inherited when we bought the house 15 years ago. They get bigger and crazier each year.

Mine is just finishing, it took 4 years for us - that was a garden centre job.

Waspie · 19/05/2023 17:32

I'm finally in a house I plan to be in for at least 10 years so I've asked for wisteria and a trellis/frame for my birthday next month. Love wisteria. These photos are gorgeous 😍

dudsville · 19/05/2023 17:33

That's done very happy looking wisteria!

QuintanaRoo · 19/05/2023 17:33

I’d love a wisteria but am worried about it damaging the house. Are they bad for brickwork

Blogdog · 21/05/2023 13:12

@QuintanaRoo they need to be trained on wires so you will need to screw in a wiring system into the wall. Provided it’s anchored correctly and you stay on top of pruning it should be fine - the only time brickwork would be affected is if the screws were not strong enough for the wall or the plant gets too heavy for the wiring system.

There are wisteria on houses near me which are decades old and they don’t seem to have had any problems.

Thank you, I’m going to talk to dh about it.

It’s even happier today. I think wisteria might prefer climbing trees to climbing buildings, left to their own devices…

Whoop whoop.
This year is a bumper year for ours after last year when it hardly bloomed. It makes me smile every time I go into the garden!

Yep! I have to hack huge lengths off mine every year, to stop them going into the apple trees, medlar and mulberry.

BinkyBeaufort · 21/05/2023 22:38

Wisteria seems to be thriving so well this year. Lots of it around our village, but when I tried it about 3 years ago it died after just a few months. Tempted to try again in a different spot, as it's so beautiful.

SchoolTripDrama · 21/05/2023 22:57

You can buy grafted Wisteria now which blooms during its first season. I bought one the other day in full bloom

SchoolTripDrama · 21/05/2023 22:58

@Needanewnamebeingwatched Buy a grafted wisteria they're blooming right now

Blogdog · 21/05/2023 23:21

Oh that’s lovely @TheStirrer. The racemes are gorgeous.

Is that a jasmine growing at the base?

Our wisteria took 21 years to finally bloom

OMG. Please no!

QueenOfHiraeth · 21/05/2023 23:31

Mine is 4 and still not flowered. It's growing slowly though as our soil is sandy and poor. Bought DM one at the same time, her has not flowered yet but is about 4x the size of mine!
