What can I buy to put in a pot outside that has a strong scent?

Have space on my patio at the back door so would love something that smells beautiful as I go in and out

Thanks!

Can you lift a few of the tiles and create a proper bed? Then you could have something all year round. Viburnum and rosemary in winter, scented narcissi hyacinths, wallflowers, lilac in spring, lavender, roses, honeysuckle, scented pelargoniums in the summer and autumn months. Fantastic for wildlife too. Growers websites Eg Sarah Raven have special sections for scented plants to help with ideas.

The great thing about pots is you can move them around depending on the time of year. I have a Daphne for late winter early spring scent and have just bought a mock orange for the summer.

Pots of night scented stock are lovely near a door.

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/04/2023 15:24

WAllflowers now, then Matthiola incana, then pinks for the summer.

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/04/2023 15:25

Or rosemary for scented leaves all the year round

ThatLibraryMiss · 16/04/2023 15:26

If you have room for a climber Star Jasmine, trachelospermum jasminoides, is fantastic. It has a very strong scent similar to jasmine but flowers for much longer, starting in June and mine carries on until late Autumn.

CombatBarbie · 16/04/2023 15:29

Daphnes...... There's one that flowers approx Mar til Oct.....

halfpasteleven · 16/04/2023 19:47

Thanks so much to you all..
will have to be pots I'm afraid- DH worked too long on the patio for me to dig it up again!
We do have beds too so I'll look at other options for them but we do use the back door more than the front so just wanted to make the most of it especially coming into Summer!

Is rosemary easy to grow?
I actually have some lavender ready to pot...

I was going to suggest might scented stock abc they are really cheap. I think Wilkos has packets of seeds for 50p.

My mother gave me a cutting of a yellow ribes (flowering currant) a long time ago, my goodness the scent knocks my socks off as its so strong (but lovely). So annoyed with myself for putting it at the end of the garden.

Go to a good garden centre in each season and see what looks and smells gorgeous. I found a Christmas box(?) that was sweet scented that way.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 16/04/2023 20:37

I took DD to the garden centre today to do this. I wanted some nice scented plants so gave an 8yo free reign to sniff every plant in the centre and find the ones she liked.

We've ended up with a mixed herb section of the garden with lemon thyme, rosemary, garden thyme, a couple of varieties of mint and lavender

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 16/04/2023 20:40

Are you after a few pots @halfpasteleven? The Labrador will work well in the Summer Wink

AlisonDonut · 16/04/2023 20:47

My go to for summer scent is Attar of Rose Pelargonium.

Also love a Lemon Verbena - very strokable each time you walk past.

And any mint. I love chocolate mint for regular squish and sniff.

ohsuzannah · 16/04/2023 20:49

I'm putting wallflowers out right now 😊

Spanielsarepainless · 16/04/2023 20:56

For winter, sarcococcus and skimmia.

Vinniepolis · 16/04/2023 20:57

Seconding vanilla nemesia - has an amazing scent and is perfect in pots.

Silentbarking · 16/04/2023 20:57

Jasmine, night scented stock, sweet peas.

CatherinedeBourgh · 16/04/2023 22:36

Gardenias. Happy in a pot and the best scent ever. Some are hardy.

Sundaefraise · 16/04/2023 22:38

If you can go for a large pot, you need a scented deciduous azalea. Mine perfumes my entire garden when it’s in flower, it’s amazing.

Thirding it. I'm about to get some for some hanging baskets. Wisley is the one I've had before and it's gorgeous.
Wallflowers are beautiful too. I think both, in pots, would give you the scent you are after. Rosemary etc smell nice but usually only if you rub them imo

wizzler · 16/04/2023 23:18

Our Skimmia smells wonderful in early spring
. Honeysuckle for later I. The year
