A crane was sat at the end of our garden in the fence this morning!

Might have been a heron actually. But it was huge !

AllAboutMargot · 03/04/2023 20:49

Rooks
Yellowhammers
Pheasant
Rock doves
Magpies
Chaffinches
Blackbirds
Sparrows

Floribundaflummery · 03/04/2023 20:56

Wow you are so lucky to have a lesser spotted woodpecker super rare and would love to see! We have (rural garden) today:
gold, green and chaffinch
great blue and long tailed tit
firecrest
chiffchaff
blackcap
greater spotted woodpecker
buzzard
crow
wood pigeon
dunnock
house sparrow
wren
robin
blackbird

The birds seem to love our tiniest pond with waterfall and queue up to wash. Handy tree beside to hide in. A happy accident but would definitely recommend.
How do you encourage siskins? Jealous. Great thread.

lipstickwoman · 03/04/2023 21:02

@Floribundaflummery that's a fabulous list! Do you live in the countryside?

Oh, I was so excited today, we had a jay come to visit our (very urban) garden! I love our usual blue tit/great tit/goldfinch visitors, but it was such a wonderful thing to see.

SarahAndQuack · 03/04/2023 21:11

What a lovely thread! I was only in my garden after 3, and wasn't paying total attention, but I noticed our resident bluetits are nesting; there are bullfinches and goldcrests in the field; there was a robin following me about. I could hear blackbirds and wrens, and buzzards further away. I will try to listen and look more carefully another day!

Uurrjb · 03/04/2023 21:11

I love jays! Aren't they gorgeous?! I have twice in my life found those beautiful barred feathers of theirs, and each time I was really delighted.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/04/2023 21:16

Magpie
Parakeet
Blue tit
Robin
Blackbird
Wood pigeon

I haven't really been looking, but these are the ones I see pretty much every day in south London.

Floribundaflummery · 03/04/2023 21:38

Yes OP in west country, rural, surrounded by fields, trees and river. Love all the red kite sightings. What a great result from the reintroduction and being destroyed previously.

lipstickwoman · 03/04/2023 21:47

@Floribundaflummery Red Kites are a frequent sight over us in Shropshire.. a close neighbour has also been feeding them (no idea what) and they come daily for a snack. Such beautiful birds; their calls are lovely too.

In our suburban garden today:

Many sparrows
starlings
robins
blue tits
wood pigeons
collared doves
magpie
blackbird

occasional visitors
heron
wren
goldfinch
red kite
coal tit
Mistle thrush

LancreWowhawk · 03/04/2023 21:59

@SarahAndQuack Yes! One of my favourites. I'm still annoyed I didn't have my phone in my pocket - even more unusual than a jay being in the garden!

Snorklette · 04/04/2023 08:40

What a lovely thread!
On my feeder today are a chaffinch (quite excited by this as haven’t seen one for ages), robins, sparrows, blue tits. Also lurking are jackdaws, blackbirds, rooks and an enormous crow. Buzzards up high. Have in the past seen green woodpeckers, the odd jay, wrens (love them!), little flocks of long tailed tits and goldfinches. Tend to see more when the weather improves as spend more time outside and less time indoors looking at the rain😉

SeaToSki · 08/04/2023 14:04

My Goldfinches turned up this morning hooray
A pair of mourning doves
I heard a pair of owls hooting at each other last night
The early evening frog sex has started in the swampy bit past my garden, they are really getting it on 🤣

timetorefresh · 08/04/2023 17:44

Along with all the usuals we've had a red kite hovering over and screeching for a while. It's a regular visitor.

lipstickwoman · 08/04/2023 18:00

The starlings arrived en masse today, scared all the smaller birds away and ate everything. Such beautiful birds with the sun shining on them but they're such bullies

Snorklette · 08/04/2023 18:35

@SeaToSki early evening frog sex 😂😂. We get a lot of pigeon sex, they’re at it 24/7, big flappy sex addicts 😁
We used to get loads of starlings but haven’t seen any so far this year.
Still, am v happy the birds are coming to the feeders.. will investigate more diverse food.

Veryfishy · 08/04/2023 18:39

We’ve seen one chaffinch ,
any ideas what food can I put out to encourage any finches ? ( my favourite is the bullfinch ) I’m already growing teasels
next doors swallows are back , they always get back first
loads of red kites , not actually in the garden but overhead

lipstickwoman · 08/04/2023 18:42

Our goldfinches love sunflower hearts and Niger seed, but be careful of Niger seed, they drop lots and it germinates under your feeders.

We occasionally get greenfinches joining them, but that's our finch lot, sadly

HecticHedgehog · 08/04/2023 18:56

We don't get much in our garden

Regulars:
House sparrows
Starlings
3 wood pigeons

Sometimes see a Robin who is new in the last year
Sometimes see a blackbird
Goldfinches (but only out the front)
Bluetits but rarely

I saw a waxwing recently and had to look it up. Haven't seen it since though.

Cookerhood · 08/04/2023 19:11

Blue tits
Robin
Blackbird
Shagging pigeons
About 6 red kites wheeling around

Could it have been a Little Egret? Like a heron but white?

Chaffinches seem to prefer eating on the ground. Bullfinches - any choice tree with fat flower buds.

Hellocatshome · 08/04/2023 19:52

Seagulls that is all.
