Fruit trees are the way to a bullfinch’s heart @LookMaAStone . I have a cherry plum on the edge of my garden, which was what originally brought them in. For years though that’s where they stayed and would fly off the second they got a whiff of a human.

This year, for some reason, my garden seems to have become a bit of a safe space for them. They’ve started coming to the feeders and I’m allowed to be in the garden at the same time as they are. I can’t get too close, but as long as I keep a respectable distance they’ll let me watch them. They’re gorgeous little birds!

Sh*t, forgot to feed the birds, thanks for the reminder..
Goldfinches, bluetits, great tits, pied wagtails, robins, pigeons, blackbirds.. I had a buzzard take a blackbird in the back garden last month when it was really cold.

yikesanotherbooboo · 01/04/2023 15:31

Robins
Crow
Pigeons
Jackdaws
Dunnock
Blue tits
Great tit
Coal tit
Long tail tit

Amethystanddiamonds · 01/04/2023 15:44

Robin, blackbird, chaffinch, goldfinch, blue tit, great tit, long tailed tit, sparrow, crow, wood pigeon, pheasant and parakeet. Possibly a green finch or a siskin but they were frightened off too quickly by the bigger birds to ID.

Still find it extremely weird watching the pheasants hoovering up the food the parakeets are discarding.

I am North East US, so a slightly different list, but I have been working on a bird friendly garden since we moved in 2 years ago, so am v pleased with my fewthered visitors
American bluebird (breeding couple)
Black capped chickadees
Red bellied woodpecker
I have heard the furry woodpecker but havent spotted him yet
Cardinals (breeding couple)
Blue jays but I wish they would bugger off as they are bullies and last year chased away all my little birds
I havent seen my Robins yet and am waiting another couple of weeks before the hummingbird feeders go out
Last year I had goldfinches which I was thrilled about

I use the app Birdsnet which will record birdsong and then give you a guess as to what it is (it uses GPS to tell where in the world you are)

Two adult magpies pulling my coir hanging basket liner to bits about 40 mins ago and trampling on the plants in the basket.

Think they might be more frequent visitors now they've found nest building material readily available.

HuggingtheHRT · 01/04/2023 18:20

We have a little gaggle of sparrows nesting in our laurel. They are all very vocal and darting about the garden looking for flies etc. It's been lovely watching them. There were SO many sparrows when I was a kid, numbers have been massively depleted and barely seems to have been noticed.

There's a great spotted woodpecker that visits our garden sometimes. And you can hear them hammering in the woods near our house.

cafecreme · 01/04/2023 18:23

Robin, sparrow, various tits, one jay.

Two horrible crows that appear to have decimated the nest in my tree where the pigeon was nesting. I'm not sure if there were young in there or eggs but the parent birds are nowhere about and the nest seems empty.

I'm not a massive pigeon lover but I didn't have the heart to knock their joke of a nest out of the tree once they were sitting on it.

See here for a selection of pigeon nests. I particularly like the egg in the middle of a bed with a token stick beside it.

Pigeons Make The Laziest Nests!

Pigeons are notoriously lazy, and will give the minimum effort needed to take care of the eggs. They spend most of their time just having fun flying around.

Can I recommend the BTO Garden Birdwatch for those who enjoy monitoring their birds on a regular basis? This isn’t the much publicised RSPB Garden Birdwatch, it’s the BTO one which allows you to submit records all the year round. You can view your records at any time, and see them summarised in different useful ways, and there’s a quarterly magazine which presents results across the country, and explains them in terms of weather patterns and other things

Garden BirdWatch

Greenfinch

Sparrow
Wren
Long Tailed Tit
Blue Tit
Great Tit
Dunnock
Lesser Spotted Woodpecker

Feed them a lot though 😜

lipstickwoman · 01/04/2023 19:06

Where do you all buy your bird food? We've ordered sunflower seeds in sacks before now, and find The Range quite good.

We get green and greater spotted woodpeckers quite a bit and the other day a sparrow hawk was having a bath in the puddle on our trampoline for about ten minutes. Was very exciting.

They haven't been in my garden yet - but I can see red kites on the thermals whilst I am sitting on my sofa which is lovely. I am also hoping to see the pair of long tailed tits we had last year. Plus robin, blue tits, starling, magpie (pair), jay, wood pigeon, great tits, a large corvid (not sure which one - crow?).

userxx · 03/04/2023 19:20

Ring necked parakeets, noisy little sods,

MYSTERIOUSGIRLONLINE · 03/04/2023 19:21

It is my belated mother-in-laws wedding anniversary and looking out my kitchen window I saw the most cutest Robin happy as Larry. I believe in seeing a Robin being someone that's been close to me saying hello and also Magpies and the song that's sang.

lipstickwoman · 03/04/2023 19:26

I added a heron flying overhead to my list today, and at the weekend we had a small bird of prey land on the fence. The garden went silent... a really special moment
