Planting bulbs out of season

What happens if I plant bulbs out of season?

I have some which for various reasons I couldn't get in the ground in the autumn. If I were to plant them nowish, would they flower late or would them lie dormant until next year?

I planted a few last week, and am hoping they might come up this year!
Having said that last year I planted some alliums much later than it said on the packet, figuring they'd be better in the ground than in the packet, and they flowered beautifully

LIZS · 12/01/2023 21:30

Still got some alliums to go in, too cold and wet so better late than never!

SchoolTripDrama · 12/01/2023 21:39

I planted some snowdrops & black tulips about a month ago? Hoping for the best!

Ferntastical · 13/01/2023 09:50

Depends on the bulb, depends on the weather.

Some may flower this season. Others may put on some foliage but no flowers until next season.

e.g. tulips really need a period of cold to then trigger them into growth when it gets warmer. So, if you plant tulips now and we get a good cold snap then the chances are they will flower. If we don't, they may not.

BarrelOfOtters · 13/01/2023 10:00

tulips will be fine if you get them in now as there's a bit of cold weather coming apparently.

Everything else nothing to stop you - if they don't come out now they'll come out next year.

Candleabra · 13/01/2023 10:02

I think Monty Don says the best time to plant things are at the right time for the plant. The second best time is now!
So I just stick stuff in the ground. If it doesn’t perform this year it will the next.

They risk getting wet and rotting in wet ground before they have a chance to put down roots and get established. They won't start growing until the spring anyway, unless we have some weird weather and they think it's spring. Doesn't gain anything growing wise.

maximist · 13/01/2023 10:29

They'll be fine, I planted tulips and daffs in early February one year and they all flowered beautifully. I've planted loads this year but there's still plenty to go in, just wish the rain would stop!

Mine are already showing top growth in a lot of cases as it's been so mild.

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/01/2023 10:51

Much better to plant them than to leave them hanging around unable to make food for a year

QueenSmartypants · 13/01/2023 10:52

Thank you, the risk of rotting aside this seems quite positive! They're peony bulbs if that makes a difference?

OP posts:
Ferntastical · 13/01/2023 13:35

Ah, that's a bit different,

Peonies are bare root (not bulbs) and a very good time to plant them is now. I just planted two myself last week.

Do research on planting depth because they do not like to be too deep and are not that keep on being moved once planted so better to get it right, first time Smile

WednesdaysPlaits · 13/01/2023 13:38

I have a flowering daffodil already!

byvirtue · 13/01/2023 15:38

Now is perfect for peony bare roots, I’m about to order some more!

QueenSmartypants · 14/01/2023 14:50

Happy news, thank you :)
Thought I'd plant them out today but it's so wet here!

Make sure base of the plant is just above the soil line as they don't like being planted too deeply. ATM, they're about £2.50 in Wilko's - buy now rather than later whilst they're fresh out of the ground so they establish well (probably won't flower for a year or two). Needs lots of space, light and good soil.

PritiPatelsMaker · 14/01/2023 23:28

I've played some Daffs today. Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best Wink

QueenSmartypants · 14/01/2023 23:51

We had a dry hour before the light went so I got them in - my front borders are going to look great this year Grin

That's great @QueenSmartypants and of course I meant planted, not played! Grin

Now is fine for peonies and most other things (such as tulips) will catch up. I’ve got some bulbs to plant tomorrow - they were in the post-Christmas bargain bin!

byvirtue · 15/01/2023 09:08

I’m putting in a whole peony bed for cut flowers so have ordered wholesale. The wilko price is good though!

WaggledMyAerialAndWolfedMyCustardCreams · 15/01/2023 09:50

Ooh, a cutting bed. ((envy)) My garden’s too small but perhaps I can annex part of the allotment.

Ferntastical · 15/01/2023 09:59

The two I put in were two free ones from Gardeners World magazine and have been added to my cutting bed in the allotment.

It's the first year so not banking in many peonies but looking forward to cutting some of the other flowers through the year.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 15/01/2023 10:21

Ooh. Thank you for kicking me up the arse metaphorically. I've just found my bulbs in the conservatory. I've got 80 in total. Some Allium Purple Sensation and the rest are all the others are dark purple / black and Apricot / Orange tulips. The cold they have endured this past month in their 'waiting room' means that most of the tulip bulbs are already sprouting.

I'm just looking out of my bedroom window now and making a (random) plan of where they will go. Bulb planter at the ready. Cup of tea made and alarm set for 30 minutes time to make a starrt. Apparently, DD is going to help me.

QueenSmartypants · 15/01/2023 11:06

@RainbowZebraWarrior those are my favourite tulip colours!

@byvirtue how do you get hold of them wholesale??

Currently wishing I had spare tulip bulbs hanging around..
