Planting bulbs out of season

What happens if I plant bulbs out of season?

I have some which for various reasons I couldn't get in the ground in the autumn. If I were to plant them nowish, would they flower late or would them lie dormant until next year?

I have this problem.

So l planted all mine in pots In the autumn. Then planted them into the cleared ground in February.

Worked a treat last year, and got a load more to put in this year.

@QueenSmartypants if you Google Parker’s wholesale they sell to anyone but there are minimum quantities, for peonies it’s 5 of one variety.

I buy all my bulbs from there in packs of 25.

@WaggledMyAerialAndWolfedMyCustardCreams i interplant flowers with my fruit and veg plants, so good for the pollinators and bringing in other beneficial insects and birds (for the slugs). Love having seasonal flowers to pick for the house too.

The dahlias I despaired of at home in pots were planted out at my allotment and they have been my most reliable crop down there (not so sure for the coming year as the allotment have been flooded so much of the winter).

I struggle with peonies as I have a small garden and cram stuff in - they like a bit of space to spread themselves if they’re going to flower well.

Last year we had really weird weather and I didn’t plant my tulip bulbs until February they were a wee bit late but they came up and we’re lovely.

They were lovely. I’d like to think we’re lovely too….

All gardeners are lovely ((gavel, as they used to say on here back in the day))

Finally a break in weather today to get the last ones in.

Maggiethecat · 16/01/2023 12:14

@LIZS - managed to get last few stragglers in just before snow where we are.
Some have mould which I scraped off so hope something will flower.

I now have an issue with waterlogged troughs. Bulbs are peeking through but may rot in the constant rain.

Do your troughs have drainage holes? If so, I usually raise mine up on some bricks or stones or move away to a drier area.

I learned the hard way from planting in troughs without adequate drainage in my wet and boggy area. Bloody rain is a nuisance isn't it?

I thought they did, have not had an issue in previous years, but maybe the holes are blocked. 2 of the 4 are fine.
