my parents grow celeriac.

it's easier to grow and you can still use the green.

greenacrylicpaint · 26/03/2023 17:08

do peppers get 'elbows' that I need to pinch out? do I need yo stake?

I'm weirdly excited about growing something new.
will try to get a couple of tomato seedlings at a plant swap.

tizwozliz · 26/03/2023 17:15

Been shoring up the raised beds today, decided they'll have to survive another season and then in the autumn I can completely replan and rebuild.

Bought my seed potatoes today, just growing Charlotte this year. Not planning on sowing anything else for a few weeks. I don't have as much space to keep things inside before planting out so trying to make sure it's warm enough by the time things are ready to go out.

Armpits? No. And not all tomatoes need pinching out. Only indeterminate ones that are being grown as a single stem. Peppers I've always staked but they don't all need it. I ran out last year and the unstaked ones were fine.

TheGander · 26/03/2023 17:55

I have the typical early spring dilemma, I want to sow, sow sow but am running out of window space and light levels are low inside and it’s too cold to put the babies outside.

PoseyFlump · 25/03/2023 22:23

@greenacrylicpaint they're not aubergine (leaves are more rounded)

Possibly pepper.

Could be tomato. First leaves are often simple
Not aubergine.
Think they’re too hairy for pepper.

OP posts:
greenacrylicpaint · 27/03/2023 07:25

the second set of leaves have the same shape. plus they don't smell like tomato.

PoseyFlump · 27/03/2023 13:58

They do actually look a bit hairy. Will be interesting to see how they develop. It's like a mystery surprise. You'll be disappointed now if it turns out to be a tomato after all 😂

WednesdaysPlaits · 27/03/2023 14:21

Id have guessed at pepper

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/03/2023 17:31

Physalis?

OP posts:
Agapornis · 27/03/2023 18:05

Physalis is a bit more heartshaped (like a lime tree, not the fruit) and the leaves are so hairy that they're velvety.
No suggestions from me!

PoseyFlump · 27/03/2023 20:12

@greenacrylicpaint what sort of place did you buy the seeds from? Hopefully it's at least something like an edible vegetable!

greenacrylicpaint · 27/03/2023 20:25

bought at a regular garden centre in forrin (mainland europe)
I have messaged the seed company if they can shed light.

Spent today tidying up my raised beds in my garden, put down bark around them and added a new bed (looking nice and tidy), haven’t had time to go to my plot, it’s so wet up the allotment I can’t get the car up there so nothings been planted yet other than fruit bushes. Beetroot and onions planted in the garden but nothing else. Greenhouse is full and I have no more space, my peas are taking so long to grow, first lot got eaten by the mouse who has now been trapped and relocated to some woodland 🤣. As soon as my peas have been moved up to my plot the sooner I can prick out my kohl rabbi and cauliflowers.

This is the first year I have had issues with germinating peas, I have tried 2 different packs. Mangetout have all germinated and broad beans doing well so what’s wrong with the peas?

Also not had much luck with tomatoes, planted 3 different varieties and only one is doing well.

Sunflowers are up, I have planted a smaller variety this year so I can have them as cut flowers.

Not been able to plant my potatoes as the grounds too wet.

Was a lovely day for gardening today, got lots done and felt so nice to be out now it's getting warmer.
I'm trying some new perennial veg this year after the success of the cottagers kale I planted last year. I've got a couple of Turkish rocket plants and some nine star broccoli seeds.
I sowed some wild rocket again after most of mine was killed in the heat last year while I was away and some giant red mustard leaves which are an annual but were brilliant last year.
I also bought a load of primroses of different colours and dotted them around and planted some pink marsh mallow seeds in amongst a patch of ox eye daisies.
I have a long list of plug plants I want to buy and I'm so excited for summer!

Ooh that'll be interesting to see what they say. Can we have another photo when the next set of true leaves appear? #MysteryVeg

potted on what I was sold as tomato seeds today.
not sure though. they don't look like tomatos and also didn't smell like them when handling them.

variety is supposed to be 'yellow pearshaped'. seeds bought at a garden centre.

any ideas? aubergine? chilli? peppers?

I garden on my balcony. usually have cucumbers and tomatos. alsohabe a currant and gooseberry bush. woodruff (smells amazing) and other stuff.

That is a potato leaf tomato.

It could end up being Yellow Perfection, which is a yellow salad sized one. I grow these regularly.

I've not come across any yellow pear with the potato leaf, do you still have the packet?

This is the first year I have had issues with germinating peas, I have tried 2 different packs. Have you dug out the non-germinating peas? Are they rotten? Could you try germinating indoors on some wet kitchen paper?

OP posts:
greenacrylicpaint · 28/03/2023 09:50

still have the seed packet.
I wanted varieties that you can't buy in shops and my usual supplier had issues with availability of seeds after last year's droughts.

yellow perfection looks nice!

it was also the lack of tomato smell when pricking them out.

AlisonDonut · 28/03/2023 10:51

Can you take a photo of the seed packet?

greenacrylicpaint · 28/03/2023 11:52

Yes, a few have rotten. I think it’s probably still pretty cold in the greenhouse though I have tried indoors too with not much success (less than half germinated). Was hoping to plant around 60 pea plants but so far I only have around 10. I might attempt to plant some more indoors today.

AlisonDonut · 28/03/2023 13:25

Sorry @greenacrylicpaint I've never heard of them and can't find any other tomato seeds that could be tracked down. It is a potato leaf tomato though so you should get something.

If you have trouble with peas germinating, put them onto damp kitchen roll and then into a zip lock bag. And leave somewhere warm. When you see roots, you can tear the kitchen roll and place on top of pots, cover with an inch of compost and they will continue to grow. Then you can plant out when the roots come out the bottom. Also works with coriander, cumin and other hard to germinate seeds.

Brieandbeetroot · 30/03/2023 07:05

I'm nearly ready to plant out my peas but just wondering, should I be pinching out climbing edible peas as I do with sweet peas, or will that just stunt their overall growth?
