What new roses does everyone have for this year?

After swearing I wouldn't buy anymore roses, they sent that anniversary catalog through from David Austin. So I'm now looking forward to 5 boscobell and one Elizabeth shrub roses flowering this year.

Last summer I also planted two bathesba climbing roses on an arch, they were still shrub size at the end of last season but have really taken off up the trellis at the start of this year so I'm really excited to see them.

I think my husband has hidden the catalog now as I can't find it anywhere!

I’ve ordered some new David Austin shrub roses for our front garden:
Susan Williams-Ellis
Queen of Sweden
Olivia Rose Austin
Gertrude Jekyll
Thomas a Becket

I was hoping they would be here before the weekend but that’s not looking likely.

I had my first David Austin Rose for my birthday - a climber called Gertrude Jekyll. Then I went a little bit overboard and ordered ten Olivia Rose Austin roses. 😅 I have two existing roses but they're not David Austin ones, although I know DA sells one of them (Penny Lane). The other is called Indian Summer and it has a beautiful fragrance. Planning to order a few Desdemonas for my back garden now, as I'm aspiring towards a restful white and green theme.

Two Roald Dahls and deciding on a new climber. Hubby call the anniversary catalogue my rose porn 🤪x

They are all stunning aren't they? I went for the Elizabeth on the description of the smell and have put it in the border near my front door.

The Boscobell are all in one flowerbed and I plan to put lavender in between them.

Would any of you rose fanatics like to advise me on putting in a rose bed please? Vicarious shopping!

I’m thinking of putting in a rose bed in front of a fence which is about four feet high and about 8 feet long.

It’s a fairly sunny spot.

All one colour or a mix? And would you put just roses or add in some other plants?

You could put a mix of complementary roses in the bed and then some low flowering plants to match them. They have them separated by colour n the website.

If you buy David Austin ones I would definitely recommend the rooting power, I forgot to add it to one and the others are all double the height already.

I really love my St Ethelburga rose. It looks and smells beautiful. When I'm hanging out washing I get a lovely waft of it

Has anyone tried planting salvias under their roses? Sarah Raven recommends this - she reckons it acts as a natural fungicide I think. I've got some arriving soon anyway - we shall see! I do love roses but they have so many problems!

GlisteningGoldGrasses · 01/04/2022 16:15

Oh that David Austin Anniversary catalogue is so beautiful isn't it. I've bought a 2nd Kew Gardens as the first one I've got has become one of my favorite plants, my other new ones are two Mortimer Sackler Climbing and the Lark Ascending.

Harrysmummy246 · 01/04/2022 16:34

As yet none, but they just sent another flyer with a discount code

lunar1 · 01/04/2022 19:51

I shouldn't have started this thread, I've searched every rose and want them all.

One of my favourite non DA roses is a rock and roll, which in my opinion should have been called raspberry ripple, let me try find a picture!

As the flowers mature the white turns pink.

Ooh a rose thread! Smile

I’m very impressed at the restraint of people who can buy several of the same rose - a mass looks so spectacular but I always have to have one of everything. I love all the ones mentioned especially Gertrude Jekyll.

I can finally grow roses in the ground rather than mostly in pots as I have been for years and have gone a little crazy. All the potted ones can now stretch their roots out in the soil and I ordered a bunch of new ones, all David Austin or old roses. I cannot wait to see and smell them. The new roses are:

Munstead Wood
Jacques Cartier
Rose de Rescht
Mme Alfred Carriere
Mme Ernest Calvat
Louise Odier
Reine des violettes
Falstaff
Belle Vichyssoise
Ballerina
Cecile Brunner
Alfred de Dalmas

@Pootles34 I have grown salvia under roses before and it didn’t totally stop black spot or mildew (only spraying works in my experience) although perhaps it helps, but it is a fabulous combination. I have planted the small leaved nachtvlinder and cherry lips under some pink roses and spiky caradonna with some yellow David Austins.

@Peridot1 the David Austin website is a good starting point as his own roses are reflowering, generally healthy, and fragrant as well as beautiful.

Rock and roll
I need this! Grin
SockFluffInTheBath · 01/04/2022 23:15

Ah the nice dark green book? I also fell for the Boscobel to add to my growing collection Blush and Princess Anne. And a Tottering-By-Gently because the bees need it Blush Grin

Polecat03 · 01/04/2022 23:29

Not a David Austin creation, but I've just bought a 'Blue Moon'. I've been hankering after them for a while. Love cool tones in the garden and think it's an unusual shade for a rose.

APurpleSquirrel · 01/04/2022 23:48

I've bought my first roses this year - not DA ones, but wanted to try a few & see how they coped in pots in our garden:

Virgo
Golden Rain
Joro
Waltz Time

They were classed as dormant plants but I chose ones with some new shoots & have planted them up.

That’s a beautiful colour, I don’t have one like that so I might need one more 😂
lunar1 · 02/04/2022 07:25

I have blue moon, it's stunning, and I think my bees need tottering by gently. I forgot I also added for your eyes only last year too.

I am completely new to this but I bought:

zephirine Drouhan, a bath from J Parker’s to train over a pergola
David Austin Generous Gardener to train up a north-facing fence.

I noticed that the DA bare root rose, while being about eight times thr price, had really thick stems and looked a lot more solid.

I am so excited. I know they may not flower in their first year but I can’t wait to see them grow.

Grimupnoorth · 02/04/2022 07:31

I had a blue moon in my last house and it did better than the DA ones and was amazing.
Ive just got some dead ones from jparkers. They sat in a van while evri delayed them and the whole order died. Not impressed. Do not recommend.

MakingProgress2022 · 02/04/2022 07:33

Batch, not bath!

UnnecessaryFennel · 02/04/2022 08:46

My DA rose porn catalogue arrived a couple of weeks ago - it's so beautiful. Plus the flyer for 15% off, so I've been sitting here this morning trying to choose. Basically I'd like all of them thankyouverymuch.

I bought 2 bare root Paul Noel to train over our north-west-facing garden wall, but am also very tempted by Lady of Shalott for the sunnier end of the garden, and maybe some Desdemona in big pots by the front door for the fragrance? The garden is a total mess at the moment as when we moved in the previous owners hadn't touched it for 20 years so the soil is shit and digging in anything is a pain. But I'd love a garden full of DA roses so I'm going to persevere!

lunar1 · 02/04/2022 08:50

@MakingProgress2022, your DA will flower in the first year.
