What new roses does everyone have for this year?

After swearing I wouldn't buy anymore roses, they sent that anniversary catalog through from David Austin. So I'm now looking forward to 5 boscobell and one Elizabeth shrub roses flowering this year.

Last summer I also planted two bathesba climbing roses on an arch, they were still shrub size at the end of last season but have really taken off up the trellis at the start of this year so I'm really excited to see them.

I think my husband has hidden the catalog now as I can't find it anywhere!

Boule de Neige... excellent bare root from TW, and one of its blooms last June

Is boule de neige the one with pink tipped buds? I saw one last year and it was glorious.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 07/04/2022 23:09

It does have pink buds! It's an utterly delicious rose, petals like velvety icecream.

My camera was malfunctioning last year so this is all blurred and expsed wrong, but it worked with sweet peas, Cathy and Rhapsody. I will plant fewer around it this year to let it shine more.

@ABitBesottedWithMyDog that's gorgeous, thank you, will look for it

astersugar · 08/04/2022 08:31

@astersugar

I had my first David Austin Rose for my birthday - a climber called Gertrude Jekyll. Then I went a little bit overboard and ordered ten Olivia Rose Austin roses. 😅 I have two existing roses but they're not David Austin ones, although I know DA sells one of them (Penny Lane). The other is called Indian Summer and it has a beautiful fragrance. Planning to order a few Desdemonas for my back garden now, as I'm aspiring towards a restful white and green theme.
I think I'm a bit obsessed with roses. I'm waiting for delivery of 3 x Kew Gardens and 3 x Desdemona now. I'm planning to plant them in a triangular shape to give some instant impact to my newbuild garden. I can't wait for summer!
Isonthecase · 08/04/2022 09:15

They have a catalogue? There goes my gardening budget 😂 we have a few of the climbers, I'm trying to train them up the front of the house to have a glorious mass of flowers to waft through every time I go through the front door. Basically if it goes above 2m it's on our house. Liking this rose bush option too though!

OhRosalind · 08/04/2022 09:55

Boule de neige is gorgeous, is it reflowering?

Louise Odier, Madame Ernest Calvat and her brighter sister Madame Isaac Pereire all work well on obelisks @buckeejit and smell delicious. Or if you like sprays of smaller flowers I’ve also seen blush noisette looking gorgeous on an obelisk too.

Giggorata · 08/04/2022 10:37

I have a few roses in my front garden but they were there when I bought it and I don't know what varieties they are.
We decided to clear everything else out and have all roses there with slate shale, for ease of maintenance. There is space for a few more.
I wanted a Louis XIV but everywhere was sold out.
I compromised with a Black Baccara and a Deep Secret.
We also have a scented peach coloured climber at the gate and a dark red climber against the wall.

Should I be planting salvia or other helpful plants as well? Someone mentioned garlic to me.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 08/04/2022 11:04

Boule de Neige repeat flowers, yes . I think I said it was a damask rose- it's actually a bourbon, but firmly Victorian, anyway.

Other new plantings I have on obelisks are the beautiful pink Armada and David Austin's Tess.

GJ is such a good rose. I have just planted a trio of them to grow into a huge fragrant unruly burglar-deterring bastard bush, hopefully!

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 08/04/2022 11:08

I have a black baccara, Giggorata. Hybrid teas are not very popular now but I adore its blooms. It is the first rose in my garden to get blackspot, though.

I sjrround roses with salvia, geraniums, bulbs, sweet peas, verbenas, astilbes, astranatias... endless options.

Oh just stumbled on this thread and read it with glee! I've just bought a Handel climbing rose that jumped in my basket at the garden centre. My plan was to put this up the house.

My lovely in laws have given us a healthy looking David Austin climber but they're not sure what it is. It was left in their garden from the previous owners and because they have lots of garden and flowers they can't remember what the flowers look like. From googling the remnants of the label I think it may be an Albertine. I'm now thinking this should go against the house as Google tells me it can get huge and we live on a new build style estate with lots of neighbours so don't want it sprawling (well I absolutely do but you know what I mean Grin)

I also moved my queen of Sweden into the border last autumn so hoping that does well in its new spot.

Finally, I want one more (bringing my rose total to 11 in a relatively small garden) for a partially shady corner once I've fixed the fence.

OhRosalind · 08/04/2022 13:07

Salvias are meant to be helpful according to Sarah Raven. Chives, alliums, tulbaghia (society garlic) and other stuff from that family are supposed to be beneficial too. But loads of stuff works well with roses: lavender, verbena, irises, hardy geranium, guara and so on.

lunar1 · 08/04/2022 15:15

I should never have started this thread! I've just ordered a load of Salvias to plant in my rose bed at the front. While I was there two Dhalias and a delphinium fell into my cart. Farmer Gracy is another website I should be banned from.

I have also fed all my roses this morning for the spring.

I'm eyeing up the side of the house where I think a big David Austin climber could go.

I went for Wollerton Old Hall in the end, as we have 100m of brick wall to cover so I think the pots will have to wait!

@SockFluffInTheBath, I have found the best excuse for something to go in the wildlifey bit. I have just walked into the kitchen to find that DH has purchased a footballing gnome ffs. It's sitting on the kitchen table, grinning at me. I thought he was having a laugh but no, he actually intends for it to go in the garden! So it can stand guard by the compost bin and I will buy a huge rose shrub to cover it up. Revolting thing.

I honestly don't know who I've married...

Moonface123 · 08/04/2022 15:37

l have lots of DA roses, l plant salvias and penstemons around them, l have also started growing the small bell/ trumpet shape clematis through them and behind them , they are so dainty looking and don't overwhelm the roses, got a lovely peachy pink one called sonnett, useful when roses are between flushes. My favourite DA rose is Gertrude Jeykll, followed closely by William Shakespear, l prefer the stronger colours as l find the lighter shades fade alot in the sun.

OhRosalind · 08/04/2022 15:43

@UnnecessaryFennel make sure you chose something with vicious thorns so he’s not tempted to move it to a more prominent location! On the the plus side though, he’s just given you the perfect excuse to buy another rose.

UnnecessaryFennel · 08/04/2022 15:56

Grin Grin I have a feeling that the poor gnome is going to meet with a terrible accident quite quickly...

SockFluffInTheBath · 08/04/2022 16:33

If it were to meet an untimely end it would make good crocks for the bottom of a large pot. Shallow grave and all that…

UnnecessaryFennel · 08/04/2022 16:35

That is a GREAT idea, sockfluff! Waste not want not...

SockFluffInTheBath · 08/04/2022 16:37

😇

Maybe plant a nice Lichfield Angel on top to keep watch over the poor thing… 🤣

mostlydrinkstea · 08/04/2022 17:06

I'm growing roses in pots this year as the soil in this garden is so poor and the evil foxes keep digging them up. My Gertrude Jekyll is looking very happy in a larger pot than last year and my bare root For Your Eyes only and Desdemona are beginning to show buds after going in as bare root. I'm very excited to grow roses again after 30 years gardening on clay where my roses grew with vim and vigour. Very sandy loam has been no fun.

Galliano · 09/04/2022 09:15

I’ve just ordered one Desdemona. Perfect timing to order if you want just one now as the free delivery code active til Tuesday is a better deal than the 15% off for a small purchase.

Last year I had Emily Bronte and scent was amazing. Would totally recommend.

I’m also sad I didn’t buy Bring Me Sunshine before it sold out - will be looking out for more stock in May.

Despite having a reasonably generous garden I have to be restrained as very little space for new purchases, so jealous of those of you who can go mad with multiple roses.

SuchandSuchandSuch · 09/04/2022 13:45

I bought a Paul Scarlet rambling rose from the pound shop last month for £1.50. I forgot about it and assumed it had died but it now has a green leaves poking out from the top of the carton. Very pleasing - must plant if.

buckeejit · 09/04/2022 14:21

Just bought a boscobel & another climber (not DA), which is Agatha Christie. Might get them in this avo Grin
