I'm having separation anxiety from my seedlings!

(Lighthearted!) I'm parked up outside my son's workplace, waiting for him to finish so we can travel home together. I'm itching for him to finish so I can get home to check on my babies' progress 🌱 Also excited about having an annual leave day tomorrow to potter about with plants.

Anyone else just enjoying immersing yourselves in the absolute joy of the garden jobs in Spring?

Isn't March just the best gardening month?
My seedlings bring me so much joy too.

Limegreentangerine · 24/03/2022 18:20

This made me smile so much
Thank you both for being so pure .

Igneococcus · 24/03/2022 18:54

I get almost hourly updates from dp which seeds have germinated at the moment. He also reads here, so he'll see this Smile

Onlythelaundryfairy · 24/03/2022 18:55

I get it! It's amazing how much the seedlings can grow in just a few hours.

HappyAsASandboy · 24/03/2022 19:03

I have seedling envy now. We planted seeds at the weekend (but late, but never mind) but there's no signs of green yet. I keep checking even though I know it is too early!

SockFluffInTheBath · 24/03/2022 19:08

Yes, I hear you! I have trays all round the place. It’s a very exciting time of year.

purplesequins · 24/03/2022 19:10

I just thinned out my tomato seedlings and I bereft Grin

those poor baby plant corpses.

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 24/03/2022 19:15

9 out of 18 little tomato seedlings have popped into the world so far. They are the first thing I look at in the morning (and thought the whole day). They spent today out in the sun and are tucked up in the kitchen for bed tonight.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/03/2022 19:17

Mine are going well. The dill is positively effulgent.

As part of my job I also get to give free seedlings to people who struggle with food security. Spreading the love!

viques · 24/03/2022 21:51

My tomato seeds arrived today, Italian beef recommended by Monty Don last week, I usually buy seedlings so seeds are a new venture for me tomato wise!

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/03/2022 21:56

@purplesequins

I just thinned out my tomato seedlings and I bereft Grin

those poor baby plant corpses.

That's why I always have about 8 tomato plants in decent sized pots and another dozen in totally inadequate pots.
MereDintofPandiculation · 24/03/2022 21:57

It's amazing just how dry seedlings can get in just a few hours. Nearly lost my mangetout a couple of days ago.

cobblers123 · 24/03/2022 22:02

I check my seedlings every time I go in and out of the back door. Two types of tomato, one lot doing better than the other so I put in a couple more seeds to make sure I get more plants.

I can't seem to stop myself from constantly peering at them Grin

Also planted some sunflower seeds but they won't be up just yet as I only started them a couple of days ago.

MrsBertBibby · 25/03/2022 08:55

I am in a constant state of anxious temperature checking, and opening and closing doors, flaps, vents and so on.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 25/03/2022 08:58

Oh god yes this is exactly me! I love to look every day and am on tenterhooks for any in that period between sowing and germinating.

I am already anxious about going away for a few days next month. What if they need attention?!

viques · 25/03/2022 17:40

I have spread my posh Italian beef tomato seed love among friends and it is being repaid with stripey tomatoes and an obscure and un named but apparently delicious variety of cherry tomato. Gardeners are such kind people.

I'm so pleased we're having a warm spring so far; my sunflower and tomato seedlings are getting a headstart :) unlike last year where nothing seemed to grow outside until mid May!
I'm experimenting with toilet roll carrots, sweet peas and broad beans this year but struggling to keep them watered enough, especially as am using peat-free compost where the water just runs straight through and seems to be mostly composed of shredded bark. I'm going to have to be more stringent with mixing the peat free bagged stuff with my homemade compost.

TroysMammy · 25/03/2022 17:58

I've been writing progress in a journal. Date planted, how many, where (windowsill propagator, greenhouse or kitchen roll/plastic bag method, date of germination etc etc.

However the compost I've been using has green fertiliser balls in in and if I don't look closely enough I think germination has happened when it hasn't.

i've started to use coir (coconut fibre) instead of potting mix containing peat. works well for moisture retention.

Oh lovely thread. I spent the afternoon potting up all my seedlings. Biggest surprise of the day was how long and thick sweetcorn roots are! None of your wee hair like strands for them

FlatterNow · 25/03/2022 19:10

What a lovely thread! I have broccoli, leek and sweet pea seedlings on the go and I check them approx once an hour. They are my preciouses Grin.

purplesequins · 25/03/2022 19:17

I've potted on my tomatos. they look so sad after that until they get going again.
waiting for the cucumbers to show their little heads.

purplesequins · 25/03/2022 19:24

tomatos look so cool when they first poke their head out.

whataboutbob · 25/03/2022 20:07

Tomatoes.... the triumph of hope over experience. I’m not bitter, no ( lost nearly all to blight last year).

whataboutbob · 25/03/2022 20:08

But still I have planted my Ferline and my Black Russians and looking at the seedlings makes me feel good.
