The front of my house is north facing and looks like that most of the day.

@ApolloandDaphne

So what does that mean? Is it a S facing garden?

Can you not look at the property on google maps to check?

Look at Google maps?

Mines in North facing the top of our garden is the sunniest bit.

Cornettoninja · 21/03/2022 12:26

If you look at it on a map (on right move you can just click straight into it) you’ll be able to see which way it’s facing.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/03/2022 12:27

No I think it is maybe north facing.

HaggisBurger · 21/03/2022 12:28

Looks north facing yes

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 21/03/2022 12:33

Have looked it up on google/rightmove - if the house is marked correctly on the map then the garden is due south facing. I suspect it isn’t though looking at the satellite image. If you can work it out from the satellite image which one it is then that will give you a better idea. The map is orientated N/S/E/W as top/bottom/right/left accordingly. I’d do it for you but there’s no street view in that location sadly,

Cornettoninja · 21/03/2022 12:36

I’ve far too much time on my hands (procrastinating mainly) so looked it up.

It’s south facing but short so is shaded by the house itself in the evening. I think the photos were taken fairly late in the day. Our south facing garden is similar and we only get sun right at the end of it in the evenings.

DidymusAmbrosius · 21/03/2022 12:36

It looks North Facing - assuming this photo was taken sometime durin g the middle(ish) of the day.

All North Facing means is that when the sun is at it's highest (in the South) then your house is between the sun and your garden, thus casting the garden into shade.

Looking at a map and it's as simple as looking at your garden in relation to your house. Make sure the map is displaying with North at the top (default option for most maps) and if your garden is above your house on the map (i.e. closer to the north than the house) then it's north facing.

If it's closer to the south than your house, it's south facing. Ditto East and West.

e.g. in the photo attached, house 77 has a north facing garden; house 59 has a south facing garden.

If you've got an iPhone. It has an inbuilt compass - just use that

inappropriateraspberry · 21/03/2022 12:49

It's north facing. South facing gardens are desirable because they don't get shaded from your own home, although you may have neighbouring properties that do.

titchy · 21/03/2022 13:25

It's south facing - a pp has looked it up!

ElephantLover · 21/03/2022 13:47

South facing gardens get sun all through the day until almost sunset. If the shadow of the house is on its garden it's most likely a north facing garden (or could be east facing of the pic was taken at sunset).

My garden is south facing and I have no time when my house shadow falls on my garden. The shadow is only on my front drive (different angles depending on time of the day)

Cornettoninja · 21/03/2022 13:59

Okay, I never thought about it that hard and my garden is more s/e facing and maybe the one in the OP is too. It’s definitely not north.

Just to compound my stalkerish tendencies, there’s a picture of a clock elsewhere in the listing pointing at 6, and I doubt that’s in the morning.

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 21/03/2022 14:45

Those saying it’s south facing - if you look at the google satellite image, the house marked’s garden is nothing like the one in the image, and it’s a semi (I think) so not the right house.

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 21/03/2022 14:48

Looks much more like this house (set back garage, red car, dormer on right hand side) in which case it is indeed north facing.

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 21/03/2022 14:48

Aaarrgh sorry, image fail.

Yep we have a north facing garden top bit gets full sun in the morning then the rest the other of the day . It's never been a problem . We get loads of sun

MereDintofPandiculation · 21/03/2022 16:57

@MyHusbandTheIdiot has the right house, you can see the patio in the foreground, the wall halfway, the garage on the right, and the lighter coloured house off centred to the right at the end of the garden,. It’s the only one on the street that looks like that. The default position of google maps is with the north to the top, so it’s north facing.

The shadow is quite long, so would either be morning or evening on a east or west facing garden, or early in the year in a n facing garden. You'd expect more of the garden to be in the sun in mid summer because the sun is higher in the sky and casts a shorter shadow.

MereDintofPandiculation · 21/03/2022 17:03

Im not sure what you’re meaning by south facing? Most of us are describing a garden as south facing if it’s on the south side of the house (so you face south if you look at the garden from inside the house).

If that’s an evening pic, then the sun would be in the west, so the garden would be east facing. but from the quality of the light, I reckon that’s a midday pic, so a north facing garden. And google maps clinches it

Fernandina · 23/03/2022 15:19

When you are in your house and looking out of the window at your garden, which direction are you facing?

If you are looking towards the north, then it is a north-facing garden.

Cornettoninja · 23/03/2022 16:30

@MereDintofPandiculation attached is a screenshot of my phone compass pointed straight at my back fence - I watch the sun rise over my left fence and and set over the right 🤷‍♀️ By this time of day I can clearly see shadows caused by neighbouring houses/fences and my own house. Granted it isn’t the biggest garden but I’m not posting photos of that until I’ve got off my backside and mowed the grass! Grin

I'm struggling to get my head around that. My garden is south facing, and at 16.30 the sun is still shining on the house wall.

For your own house to cast a shadow on your garden it would have to be somewhere between E and WNW, and before 6am GMT or after 6pm GMT

Where's your sun at midday in winter?
