how are your snowdrops?

Happy Imbolc!
Except there's little sign of the snowdrops I planted last April, perhaps too late.
What's the state of snowdrops elsewhere? does everyone else have lots?

Mine are up, in fact a couple were up at Xmas !

strawberriesarenot · 01/02/2022 18:29

Only began to really show last week. I found them really hard to grow from dry bulbs though- you really need green bulbs from a clump divided after flowering.

ThisisMax · 01/02/2022 18:29

Up really well and lots in flower since xmas. If you planted bulbs they are prob not coming back- or did you plant in the green?

Lallybroch · 01/02/2022 21:35

I was at my dd's about 20 minutes north of Dundee and she's got some just showing in the garden. She only moved in before Christmas so it's going to be a year of discovery in her garden. It looks like quite a large clump of them and I'm delighted as I have none in my garden and I love snowdrops.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 01/02/2022 21:36

Out of all the bulbs I planted I have ONE solitary snowdrop! Gutted!

Slightlydustcovered · 01/02/2022 23:36

I have both, the ones planted in the green have done better but the bulbs have done ok, and they will clump out with time. The ones in the sunny spots I find are always ahead in my garden. I don't mind though as it lengthens the time I see them. Planning on ordering some more to go in this year as I love them.

MintJulia · 01/02/2022 23:46

Some snowdrops have been in flower for about a week, so far only in the more protected parts of the garden. Most years we have swathes of them through the lawn.

We are in a frost pocket in rural Hampshire and had a couple of -6 frosts last week which may have slowed them up a little.

viques · 01/02/2022 23:47

My common ones are doing well, but no sign of my dear little wasp, I am hoping it is just a bit too early yet, I did look on line to replace but they were asking £10 a bulb and £4 postage! Bit of a stinger I thought (ha ha).

Thesearmsofmine · 01/02/2022 23:48

We planted loads of the bulbs last year, nothing yet(in Yorkshire).

ReviewingTheSituation · 01/02/2022 23:48

Mine are just coming up now. They came up exactly this time last year. I love seeing them poke through.

welliewarmer · 02/02/2022 00:03

There are loads of different kinds of snowdrop though, they might all have slightly different flowering times. Mine are poking through but not really open yet.

Hairyfriend · 02/02/2022 00:03

I'm Sth East/East Anglia. I have a hand full up. They were cheapy, dry bulbs from lidl last year, so not an established clump as yet and not the best to start with. Flowers starting coming out 2 weeks ago.

Our neighbour has a whole bank of them all flowering and they are FAR more impressive than my sparse few!

Movinghouseatlast · 02/02/2022 00:06

My bulbs bought in the green the year before last didn't appear last year. £60 down the drain!

toppkatz · 02/02/2022 00:06

There's quite a few in the woodland down the road, but they are at varying stages. Some in flower and some barely poking through yet.

GeidiPrimes · 02/02/2022 00:09

I noticed some clumps a few days ago in the (quite shady) churchyard near me.

Hebeee · 02/02/2022 00:49

Ours (we have loads planted by a previous owner, although I have transplanted quite a few to different locations 😉) have been flowering for about a week.... we're in SW Wales....

WetRainbowRoses · 02/02/2022 21:41

Mine are flowering and looking beautiful.
Planted them maybe 2 or 3 years ago from dry bulbs from Poundland.
I really rate Poundland for plants and bulbs tbh

MrsBertBibby · 03/02/2022 08:20

Mine are coming into flower now, including some I moved last Spring from the front garden to the back. Extra pleased to see those ones.

A fair few don't seem to have made it, though. Going to have to buy in some more.

BuboOwl · 03/02/2022 08:57

Monty Don said his snowdrops were slow to appear this year as well because it was a dry Autumn. They need a good bit of moisture apparently!

Rosebuud · 03/02/2022 08:59

Mine are also slow this year, and ours are prolific normally. The daffodils are coming up faster.

Tal45 · 03/02/2022 09:31

Snowdrops are flowering but only in the last week.

TheDuchessOfMN · 03/02/2022 09:34

Mine have always been a bit poorly, a bit sparse.

I planted bulbs a couple of years ago but I’ve heard that it’s better to plant them as snowdrops after they’ve finished flowering, I think (in the green)?

SheWoreYellow · 03/02/2022 09:36

No sign of ours, but I have other bulbs sprouting happily. And one daffodil in bloom!

steppemum · 03/02/2022 09:37

I have had about 6 clumps in my garden for years.

I cannot see any of them showing their heads yet at all!

I was just thinking yesterday - where are they? By now they are usually in full flower. Really hope I haven't lost them all.

For reference - if you want snowdrops, don't buy bulbs. Find someone who has a clump, and when they have finished flowering, dug up and split the clump and give you half.

DaffodilDandilion · 03/02/2022 09:38

I planted mine last year and they’re not doing anything. I’m considering buying some ready brown from the garden centre. Do you think these will return next year?
