I've gone a bit mad with bulbs this year. Smile Looking forward to them coming up in the spring will get me through the winter I think. 🌷🌹🌺🌸🌼

I am a bit of a novice so it's all quite an experiement! I wondered if anybody else is doing the same and would like to join a thread so that we can share some photos when the flowers arrive?

@Justcannotbearsed

I've done this with plastic pots that fit inside some nice pots - so I can rotate them easily with summer bedding and the spring bulbs can get planted out or see if they come up again.

I'm planning on doing a really big trough this year as have a new extension and the kitchen window looks out on to a blank wall at the moment.

That sounds lovely. Great idea about the plastic pots inside the planters, too.

A big trough of spring bulbs sounds lovely!

XM21223 gives 15% off at Sarah Raven until 14th November, if anybody is still purchasing! Smile

My Farmer Gracy bulbs arriving soon. I did order from Sarah Raven but the collections I wanted were out of stock.
Can any expert tell me if the SR tulip bulbs I lifted last year will flower again.

JellyTotCat · 20/10/2021 11:52

I don't know specifically about SR bulbs, but my experience of tulips is they bloom a second year but are smaller. That's with doing nothing to them though. It might be possible to make them bigger if you fed them?

JellyTotCat · 20/10/2021 11:53

Looking forward to my FG white ranunculus coming

Letsrunabath · 20/10/2021 12:34

Thanks Jelly Totcat.
Think I’ll put the in a flower bed then and just hope for the best and use my new ones for the pots.

MichelleScarn · 20/10/2021 12:41

Oh I really like this idea! I'm going to try it!

TheEvilPea · 20/10/2021 13:18

I've made some more progress. Flower beds almost done and will do another few pots tomorrow, the weather looks like it'll be nice! Then just a few more pots to do once my dahlias finish flowering. I'm going to be so impatient waiting for spring!

Here’s mine from last year.

@Zippyzoppy those are really beautiful! I planted up all my pots last weekend. 15 lasagna extravaganzas!! Also have some over banister planters at the front of the house and i popped in some ornamental cabbages to overwinter!

I had a couple of funny little planters that previous occupiers of the house have attached to the side of the house. They are shielded by the gutters so get no rainwater... I have no idea what to plant in them!

TheEvilPea · 21/10/2021 08:50

@Zippyzoppy those are stunning!!! Really beautiful colours.

All my bulbs were from either Wilkes or Lidl, so ime you don’t really need to buy expensive bulbs - the compost costs more!

badabadabadababadadadaaa · 28/02/2022 16:51

This thread was so inspiring last autumn when I was planting my bulbs, I ended up doing quite a few lasagne pots. Anyway, now I'm finally starting to see some results, this pot is iris reticulata George and tete a tete daffodils, they just about managed some overlap in flowering times and I love the combination! Plenty more to come and I'm looking forward to it.

How are everyone else's lasagnes doing? Would love to see some of your combinations.

I bought loads of bulbs in the sales last year and mainly put them in pots . Can’t wait until all the tulips are up, but very pleased with these so far!

I don't really have a garden just a few paving stones and a raised bed and some pots

But I did buy some plants for my mother for Christmas & I have a Sarah Raven offer code 15% off if anyone would like it ( I assume transferable ) - needs to be done before 27th March - Anyone PM if they would like it

Bromse · 08/03/2022 02:22

@southcarolina

Glad I did some Googling before commenting that OP might want to rethink planting lasagnes Grin
I was wondering about that too, thinking maybe the op knows something I don't know. I mean.....there are egg plants so what next, egg trees?

I'm impressed with your gardening, op, and will be interested to see the results. Well done so far.

BasiliskStare · 08/03/2022 03:00

I have a garden smaller than most people's kitchen tables but am inspired to do a pot of spring bulbs. I shall keep the lasagne in the kitchen

Never heard that phrase before but very delightful to read about it

ostrom · 09/03/2022 08:35

Also inspired by this thread I planted some bulb lasagnes last year. Mine seems to be going much slower than the rest of the bulbs in the borders. I'm central Scotland though so I am usually a three weeks behind in England on the bulb front. The crocus are almost out!

senua · 09/03/2022 09:55

Same here. Is that because of the newness of the bulbs, though, rather than planting conditions? Do established bulbs come out earlier.

ostrom · 09/03/2022 09:58

@senua - oh thank you, I hadn't thought of that - you're probably right. The bulbs doing well are the ones that were already here. I'm fairly new to gardening - it's only the second spring in my new home.

It's because growth is triggered by a period of being below a certain temperature then warmth for spring bulbs. It's likely the "cold period" started earlier for the established bulbs as they were outside while your new bulbs were in a warehouse. Also, the soil temperature will be different in the ground and the pots.
ostrom · 09/03/2022 15:35

Thank you @chesirecat99 - I'll add some photos once I have more blooms. It's a great learning experience for me :)

badabadabadababadadadaaa · 11/03/2022 21:57

I seem to have a lot of variation in when they are flowering, based on where the pots are and how much sun they've had. But that's good actually because that way I get to enjoy them longer!
This is a small pot with anemone and white muscari, should be some white daffodils along later. I'm loving this as it's been flowering for ages already, so definitely a combination I'll be repeating next year.

I started a thread about my narcissi bulbs that have lots of leaves but no flowers. They were flowering in their pots when I bought them last year. I've had loads of brilliant MN advice and conclude they need love to do better next year. They need potting up in deeper compost, feed and water over Summer so bulb lasagne may be the answer. Any tips for a rookie please? What size pots are best? I have blue grape hyacinth flowering well, white tulips in leaf.
