Thank goodness for this thread.
I thought it was just me. Grin

The yellow ones (no idea which variety) have started to ripen here (South East) - the first year of out door grown as well. They are a bit on the grainy side though as if they have been over watered though.

No sign of the red kind being ready yet though.

Gonegrey31 · 13/08/2021 07:09

Two huge greenhouses full of green tomatoes, boo
6 weeks late this year

Winemewhynot · 13/08/2021 09:25

DH just fetched a huge bag of perfectly rippened red and yellow cherry toms gifted from a customer whilst mine are still very green 😩

RedToothBrush · 13/08/2021 09:33

We have already eaten 4 more similar sized tubs to this photo of home grown tomatoes!!! (So 6 tubs in total).

I have loads which are ripe or nearly ripe still on the plants!

I had my first ripe tomatoes about a month ago!!!

I'm in the North West and my tomatoes are all outdoors.

I am only yet to get tomatoes from my beef steak tomatoes. They are currently a blush colour so should be next week. I had planted them a couple of weeks after the others.

I have Rainbow Blend, Sweet Million and Limoncito which have all started changing colour this past week and taste delicious.

However, my moneymaker's are also starting to turn red but they look like they have blight so I'm not expecting much from them. I'm not going to bother with larger varieties next year.

I'm in Bedfordshire.

Mine aren't even forming flowersSad
But the ones I gave away are doing ok, so I assume it's the growbag compost.

jillandhersprite · 13/08/2021 22:20

Manchester - should be picking our 3rd one tomorrow - regular variety. The cherry ones don't look anywhere near to turning red...

UrbanRambler · 13/08/2021 22:30

Last year we had our first ripe toms in early July, but this year nothing ripened until the last week of July, so about 3 weeks later. Many gardeners are having similar experiences, which is understandable with the poor spring we had. Let's hope for an Indian summer.

When the nights grow cold I bring any green toms indoors and put them in a fruit bowl with some bananas - that usually does the trick, although they don't taste as good as those ripened on the vine.

AppleJane · 13/08/2021 22:38

My outdoor ones have done well but the ones in the greenhouse are not ripening as quickly. An experienced gardener said to try putting a banana skin in the greenhouse with them. Has anyone ever tried that?!

Cookerhood · 13/08/2021 22:43

Mine are still green & now they have blight. Dug the affected plant up but I don't imagine the others will escape.

APurpleSquirrel · 13/08/2021 22:51

Ours are ripening but have all got blight! Desperately trying to pick as many as possible & reopen in a bag with a banana before we have to burn the plants Sad

Roundlampshade · 14/08/2021 11:50

I spoke to someone this morning about the green tomatoes and she said that hers have got very tough skins this year. Looks like I’ll be de-skinning all the tomatoes before I make green tomato chutney.

Rollercoaster1920 · 17/08/2021 12:52

I have had one of two cherry tomatoes, and one lovely brandywine. Now blight has run rampant and I think I'll lose the lot. Gutted because the slugs ate my lettuces and cabbage this year, the runner beans didn't even germinate, broccolli bolted in the heat, slugs killed must pumpkin and courgette plants.

I had a lot of tomatoes and thought they were going to be the saviour of this year!

I think I'll not grow any tomatoes next year to see if the blight clears out of the garden. Maybe try more, and different, beans along the fences

AppleJane · 17/08/2021 17:08

@Rollercoaster1920 oh blimey what a load of bad luck! Unfair after your hard work.

I've tried growing veggies for the first time this year and did lots of reading over winter. I didn't realise just how much this weird weather can mess with all your plans. Steep learning curve!

Trethew · 18/08/2021 09:33

I grow Sungold every year and every now and then I get a plant which is clearly not Sungold. Right now I have one with medium red fruits. I suspect there was a rogue pollinator in the seed production.

jillandhersprite · 18/08/2021 16:23

ok since my post my plants have gone horrible - leaves brown and shrivelling up and tomatoes going brown - on googling have discovered I too have blight... :-(
Any useful tips - I've cut away diseased leaves, branches and tomatoes. Anything else I can do or is it inevitable that my remaining green ones are unlikely to crop into red?

APurpleSquirrel · 18/08/2021 17:24

@jillandhersprite unfortunately once it's taken hold it'll spread to all plants & they'll all die.
I'm removing all viable fruits & leaving on our garden table to ripen in the sun now, seems to be working but any showing signs of blight are being binned. We've never been successful with tomatoes in previous years, haven't grown them them for years because of it, but thought we'd give it a go this year - bloody blight!! Angry

Cookerhood · 18/08/2021 18:32

I have 2/6 plants left. The last two are a variety called"Summerlast" which are supposed to be blight resistant. We shall see. They don't have very many tomatoes on them but at least they don't have blight (yet). Last year we didn't get blight until the end of September so at least things were further on.
If these 2 get blight I shan't bother with tomatoes again.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 22/08/2021 14:31

My tomatoes are ripening! Well, the oldest three are - newer tomatoes are still defiantly green. I anticipate them having very thick skins. No sign of any blight (thank goodness).

DeepNorthFarmGardening · 22/08/2021 14:39

I've got some bananas hanging up in the greenhouse just to help things along now Grin

Getting some lovely tomatoes now.

Is there any chance of tomatoes ripening now in Scotland? Have multiple plants with loads of cherry tom’s, all green. Last week I cut off all the remaining flowers and tops off plants after reading that advice online, but I fear I am late. First timer so have learned about timings for next year I think! I wondered if I should pick some and put them in a bag with a banana?

purplesequins · 10/09/2021 14:43

I think it's not lighg enough for themto ripen now.
I am taking all the toms off this weekend to ripen indoors next to a ripe banana.
