What spreading low plant can I plant in my front garden

I'm not an experienced gardener. I've a 2 metre square patch of garden that's bare and want to plant something that will flower and spread fairly quickly, preferably come back next year. The soil doesn't seem great. Any recommendations? Preferably to order online.

Thanks.

We’ve just planted this and it’s gone bonkers. Really pretty, bees love it and supposed to come up next year.

That's great thanks! How soon did it start to spread?

There are also pink geraniums (cranesbill). I have one that is in flower for months. I'm not dead sure but I think it is Wargrave Pink. It works really well with the blue geranium.

Would it not be preferable to have something evergreen?

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 02/08/2021 22:18

I was going to say geranium too. Mine has gone crazy, taken over an entire bed.

CatM1nt · 02/08/2021 22:21

Started to spread pretty much straight away.

Hardy geranium. Or golden marjoram, but its not particularly low. Maybe 30-50 cms

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 02/08/2021 22:26

This was mine a few weeks ago. I think it flowers from June-October

Another vote for geraniums, when they finally stop flowering you can just run the mower over them and they'll come back next year.

Periwinkle (vinca major) seen to be a popular option, spread about, don't mind poor soil and have nice flowers, leaves are evergreen..

Cantstandtherainydays · 02/08/2021 23:07

Great, thanks all, I'll maybe order a periwinkle too.

Forget me not forms a reliable blanket, in the summer and flowers for a long time. The only downside is the prickly hairs much like me

Cantstandtherainydays · 03/08/2021 00:27

Grin .. Thanks. I actually have forget me nots in parts of the garden but they've finished flowering now. They are beautiful though.

London pride is there all winter too - it's only about 3 inches high with small flowers in spring

I'd choose hardy geraniums or ajuga.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/08/2021 08:17

There's also geranium sanguiniums, which have quite a long flowering period and brighter fuchsia colours.

dementedma · 03/08/2021 08:22

Periwinkle spreads like mad but means you dont have to do any weeding.

Cattitudes · 03/08/2021 08:40

Creeping thyme, evergreen, you can walk on it a little and smells lovely.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 03/08/2021 08:48

Campanulas? You'll need to plant several but they'll spread into the space in between. We've got them in very crap soil and they do fine.

DMA1984 · 03/08/2021 09:16

I like galium odoratum aka sweet woodruff as it totally covers the soil for a lot of the year. I like daffodil bulbs underneath. You could plant geraniums in with it too.

RaininSummer · 03/08/2021 09:21

Woodruff has gone nuts in the corner of my garden. Pretty leaves and white flowers.

Cantstandtherainydays · 03/08/2021 12:06

All these sound lovely! I'm now trying to find a small independent online supplier Smile

Another vote for hardy geraniums. Something else that’s nice and will spread is Erigeron which look lovely spilling over a ledge or a wall.

Cantstandtherainydays · 03/08/2021 13:21

That's no wall or edge, but I'll have a look anyway, thanks Smile

Improve the soil if you can. Just add a couple of bags of well rotted manure.
