I committed the ultimate crime: erected a fence

Just had to get this off my chest.......They were told about it before it went up. Its 90cm high. I want to be able to garden in peace and plant out what i want in my own garden without people trampling across it, their dogs, or treating it like their own garden as there was no fence before. Checked and no restrictions and the lovely man who put it in made sure it was not too high for the council to write to me about.

It now feels strangely private (I might take the blinds off the windows as they were there to stop people looking in to my home). I am glad of that. It does look strange as it is new, but I didn't anticipate how anal people can get about change!

I wont go into detail, buts lets just say my self-control limits have been tested with the crap, all no-need-for crap, just to try and wind me up (obviously as they knew about it before it went up they were prepared). I am assuming that they actually think I will take it down if they keep on - which I wont!

Anyone else had to put up with this kind of thing? Wondering if it will go on for years or not?

Looking forward to planting up with fragile plants that wont be disturbed! Although I may have to invest in some headphones to wear while gardening!

Is this a house of a flat with a communal garden? If it’s a house you should have gone the whole hog and put up a 6ft fence.

flowery · 27/03/2021 09:42

What on earth problem could anyone possibly have with a fence so low you could virtually step over it?

Not that they would be justified complaining about a 6 ft one either, but 90cm?!

Pinkywoo · 27/03/2021 09:43

Why were there no fences? I would hate that (and would have gone for one taller than 90cm!).

Gingernaut · 27/03/2021 09:43

90cm? That's not very high.

I'd have put the full 6 feet up and some trellis above that.

MyOtherProfile · 27/03/2021 09:45

Who are we talking about? Next door or random people walking by on the street?

Easterbunnygettingready · 27/03/2021 09:46

We went from a foot high to 6 foot high. Ndn attacked it with a claw hammer! Had to get a solicitor to write to her. They moved soon after - and left a string on bunting on the fence! Very odd!!

25yearsnhsworker · 27/03/2021 09:47

Is this a front garden?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 27/03/2021 09:49

Wow, I'd guess that the type of people who think it's acceptable to go into someone else's garden will continue to be unreasonable but just ignore. You should have got a higher fence!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 27/03/2021 09:51

What is wrong with people? I like our NDNs a lot (semidetached) but I still want a fence between our gardens. Hmm

If they are doing anything illegal, take pictures and make note of dates and damage, etc. Maybe set up a camera to record up to your fence line.

Bluntness100 · 27/03/2021 09:53

How can a less than three foot fence give privacy?

YarnSquirrel · 27/03/2021 09:53

i dont know why there wasn't a fence before, other houses have a fence or hedge between them, its not a communal garden just a garden (front) without a fence and its people who live here and sales people (obviously not during lock down) and leaflets and stuff that look in through window. i didn't want to go too high as I didn't want a lot of fence or create an eyesore. Well glad to see that I am not being unreasonable here judging by what people are replying!

Bluntness it gives privacy as it has stopped people walking past my window and looking in. they now walk round the fence

Ah front garden! I understand now why there was no fence. We have some plants between our front gardens and other than handing post to each other over it, everyone goes around it. I don’t blame you for being annoyed.

nailsathome · 27/03/2021 09:57

We're doing the same for our front garden today.

porridgecake · 27/03/2021 09:59

Now you need to plant some shrubs that will grow above the height of the fence. Maybe something prickly. Some people are inconsiderate and lazy and seem to think it is fine to take the shortest route across front gardens.

Proudboomer · 27/03/2021 10:11

I have a low fence on one side as the only thing the other side is a bridle path but I still have a hedge in front of it.
Hornbeam makes a lovely hedge. It is a native plant which is green through the summer but retains its leaves in winter which go a crispy bronze and don’t fall off until the new green emerges.
Much lower maintenance than a privet and good for native wildlife.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 27/03/2021 10:41

Front garden - ok fence height makes sense! Just ignore them, they are weirdos and need to get a life.

Sprig1 · 27/03/2021 10:44

Enjoy your fence. It's disappointing that some people feel the need to complain about everything.

UCOinaUCG · 27/03/2021 10:51

Enjoy your fence and your garden. Ignore the comments.

sanfranfibber · 27/03/2021 10:56

How does a 90cm fence stop people looking in your garden? It's well below eye height?

DeepfriedPizza · 27/03/2021 10:58

We are the only house in the street with a fence round our front garden. When it snowed we saw that the postie had walked over every ingle front garden and had to go round our fence Grin

UCOinaUCG · 27/03/2021 11:00

It means people don't cut across her garden now and come close to her window and look in. They are kept at a distance now.

When I have about 250 letters to deliver, I have very warm feelings about those people who have a gap that I can walk through instead of going back to the road. It may only be 20m down to the road and back, but if I can walk straight across for only one in five houses, that saves me a full kilometre. I don’t think it’s lazy if delivery people take advantage of the option if it’s there.

Neighbours is a different matter. It won’t hurt them to walk the extra bit nice or twice a day.

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/03/2021 11:04

Once, not nice

Butterfly44 · 27/03/2021 11:06

All those talking about a 90cm height. Fencing for front gardens facing a pavement can't be more than 1m high.
Enjoy less trampling OP!
