I'm been quite reserved but I just want start planting seeds now!

What seeds are you looking forward to setting off the most?

I'm going to need a bigger greenhouse.

I planted a couple of shrubs (just into larger containers) today to make a sort of container patio. Different height containers.
Have tomato plants growing inside and tomorrow I will plant courgette seeds.
Also have a few packs of wildflower seeds.
He nice go get out and do a bit!

GameofPhones · 19/03/2021 23:48

Nasturtiums because they are beautiful (and edible), and so easy they are only for kids and novices, apparently. Not letting that put me off, though I am a novice.

foxywheaton75 · 19/03/2021 23:58

I've got some more sweet peas to sow and some salvias.
I quite fancy some chilli seeds after watching Monty Don tonight, so may pop to the garden centre too.
Excited for spring.

MrsBertBibby · 20/03/2021 01:05

I've got to thin out snapdragons and mesembryanthemums, and pot on some cosmos. Need to load the propagator with more cosmos, dahlias, morning glory, and whatever else is in the seed box. Got some lawn to dig up and shrubs to plant out.

Busy weekend!

GemmaFoster · 20/03/2021 01:11

Planted a bed of sunflowers today from last years seeds. Usually I plant in pots but fancied a huge display this year. Going to plant last years allium seeds tomorrow.

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/03/2021 01:16

Planted wildflower seeds and butterfly flower seeds. Also done Coriander and Basil in pots on my kitchen window sill.

Proudboomer · 20/03/2021 03:15

This weekend I have got marigolds, nasturtiums and poppies to go into the greenhouse.
I have the back flower bed to weed and cut back the buddleia I grown there to block out the neighbors shed.
I have a a flamingo Salix that needs trimming.
I want to tidy up the hornbeam hedge as I didn’t do it in September when I should have.
Then 2 side beds to weed and prune the laurels and bay.
Once that is all done the next few weeks will be jet washing the patio and drive, oiling the summer house and then hopefully it will be warm enough to get out the patio furniture give it a jet wash and set it up ready for some sunny weather.

Just got in from 6 glorious hours in the garden. I've potted on lupins, and planted lambs lettuce, beet leaf, melons, squash, courgette, dill, basil and penstemon. I trimmed the hedge and sorted out all the pots inside the greenhouse and outside in the cold frames (to make space!). Tomorrow I'm going to edge the lawn and maybe scrub down the garden furniture.

I spent 10 mins lying on the grass staring up at the cherry tree which is covered in blossom and had dozens of bees. I love spring.

I hope you all had as much happiness as I did

Oh that sounds like a great day did
I love lupins so much.
I also planted wildflower seeds into some various containers. Did a tidy up and ordered a nice make to order garden table and chairs that we have saved for a while for.
Repotted houseplants too.

WobblyLondoner · 20/03/2021 18:58

I planted a Fatsia greenfingers in an area where I tried but failed to grow raspberries (small urban garden). Then planted out some foxgloves grown from seed last autumn, moved a tiarela and a thalictrum. Tomorrow I'll plant out lots of aquilegia seedlings - lime green and yellow queen I think are the varieties. Love pottering at this time of year.

didireallysaythat · 20/03/2021 20:26

This year I'm going to try and actually plant out everything I grow. I always keep some plants in pots and this time of year I rediscover them dead or dying. I've got half a dozen lavender and cat nip that got too wet and look very unhappy. They get two weeks to dry out and warm up in the greenhouse and if they don't revive they are heading for the compost bin.....

Went to the garden centre today, bought a fig, some pots & seeds.
Tomorrow am planning to pot on some artichoke plants, repot the fig; plant tomato, courgette, sunflower & various other seeds. Pin back the loganberry, move a rogue strawberry.

didireallysaythat · 20/03/2021 20:48

@APurpleSquirrel I just remembered I planted some artichoke seeds as well today - first time for me. Do they germinate well? I've brought them in as I thought they'd like it a bit warmer (my greenhouse isn't heated).

Muchtoomuchtodo · 20/03/2021 20:51

Just some sunflowers.

Garden centres still not open here.......🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Oh this thread is making me feel excited about getting seeds in the ground. I have planted a few new roses, although the most expensive, Rosa Mutabilis, is quite small, and my chicken was trampling all over it !
I have some nice things to go in, that are still under cover. Some geraniums and ferns, a beautiful Dianthus, and a type of dandelion but with amazing peachy flowers. I also have dahlias to put in.

whatswithtodaytoday · 20/03/2021 21:06

I've got sweet peas, snapdragons and poppies which I sewed last week, plus ranunculus and anemones (late, oops!). I've run out of seed trays now but also I think need it to warm up a bit before I do morning glory, more poppies and cosmos.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/03/2021 21:10

I LOVE poppies but I can never grow them. I have spent so much money on seeds to no avail.
What am I doing wrong ?

whatswithtodaytoday · 20/03/2021 21:13

I have no idea, I've never grown them from seed before 😁 But they seem to grow well in my garden from bigger plants, so I figured I'd have a go. Advice welcome!

SirVixofVixHall · 20/03/2021 21:14

I did try growing seedlings once, and I got a few then, but they really hate being moved and so they were small and weedy. Friends scatter seed around willy nilly and have poppies everywhere.

didireallysaythat · 20/03/2021 21:25

I can't get sweet peas to germinate. I've spent a fortune over the years and I usually get 1/20 to come up.

OP posts:
APurpleSquirrel · 20/03/2021 21:45

@didireallysaythat we've had good luck with germination of artichoke seeds in the past usually 4/5 seeds. However Aldi some plug plants so mouthy those instead this year in the hopes they'd get going earlier this year & if more established might not succumb to the frost next winter/spring.

Proudboomer · 20/03/2021 21:57

Poppies always do best if sown directly into the garden.they like a sunny spot with well drained soil. Not to fond of clay soil and like soil that is quite poor so don’t feed the soil. I mix my seeds with a handful of seed compost then sprinkle in the area I want them and then dust over them with another handful of seed compost but not covering them completely and gently pat down the area. Then a light watering and hope for the best
angeltattoo · 20/03/2021 22:03

I planted dhalias and lillies today, these are the seeds I have to plant but I needed some more seed trays that I picked up this afternoon so will donthem next. Very happy few hours in the garden today.

This thread is lovely. Is it ok to plant wildflowers into pots? I hadn't thought about that before.

Every year I try and fail to grow flowers. Hoping this is my year Thanks

didireallysaythat · 20/03/2021 22:20

@freckles20 your garden your rules. I like amni majus which I think looks a lot like cow parsley. It germinates easily (for me) so slotting the plants into borders here and there makes it seem wilder.
