Anyone else struggling with this? They tomatoes grew ages ago but have been stuck at the perfect size and totally green.. seems like they're never ripening

Try some banana skins near them to ripen them.

Jojo19834 · 22/07/2020 18:46

I’m interested in this as mine are the same....

RedCatBlueCat · 22/07/2020 18:55

We are only just getting tomatoes. I hope we get some over August! I've got nothing useful to add, just hoping someone with knowledge come along to advise you soon.

KuruptFM · 22/07/2020 18:55

Same here!

WaffleCash · 22/07/2020 18:59

They do take forever, even with perfect temps can be 30 days to ripen and it's been quite cool recently.

Kion · 22/07/2020 20:57

Watching this with interest too OP. My cherry tomatoes seem to be growing into big tomatoes but are still green.

Rookiegardener · 22/07/2020 22:57

Ok so it's not just me then. Guess we're all in it together. Some of my tomatoes have been there over a month and still green. Really do hope they turn red. Definitely think it's the cool and cloudy temps we've had the last month. Here's hoping for a hot August and warm September.

@chocolatespiders thanks for the tip. Where did I put them? Is that for after they've been picked or do I put them near the plant stem?

StylishMummy · 22/07/2020 23:10

Have you taken off the lower leaf stems? Mine are bare on the stem now up until the first trusses of fruit and it's helping them to ripen much quicker Smile

chocolatespiders · 22/07/2020 23:11

In the past I have put banana at the base of plant. Although a quick Google suggests to pick them and place in a paper bag with a banana.

crimsonlake · 22/07/2020 23:20

Same problem here, I might try and pick a few off and see what happens.

didireallysaythat · 22/07/2020 23:21

It's a little bit early still for tomatoes - esp as the weather hasn't been as sunny...

Titsywoo · 22/07/2020 23:27

Mine didn't turn red last year until late August so still a bit early possibly.

Rookiegardener · 23/07/2020 08:39

@StylishMummy yes I've done that. Let's hope it helps :).

@didireallysaythat @Titsywoo thanks. That's reassuring. I'll bide my time.

I was going to post the same! I have lovely clusters of green tomatoes but they’re just not ripening. I can’t remember it taking as long before but maybe it’s that I’m normally out at work all week rather than peering at them all day!

XXSex · 24/07/2020 00:59

Don’t take them off the vine. When they ripen on the vine they are sooo much nicer. Mine are just starting to ripen now and I’m very excited for tasting time (if the 7 year old leaves any for me!)

Defenbaker · 24/07/2020 01:17

My cherry toms in the glasshouse began ripening about 2 weeks ago, but it seemed like a long wait while the green fruits just sat there, not seeming to change, for about a month before that. The ones that are outside are about 2 weeks behind, but began to ripen recently. For info, I live down on the south coast, so the climate down here is generally a few degrees warmer than northern parts of the UK.

Toms need warmth to ripen, and July has been quite changeable and slightly cooler than average, so many people are having similar issues with ripening. If the fruit tresses are being shaded by leaves/nearby plants, you could snip some of the foliage off to allow some more sunlight through. Or you could use a mirror to reflect more sunlight on them. Apparently the ripening process is caused by a chemical reaction, rather than sunlight, but warmth helps to trigger that chemical action.

Finally, be patient - home grown toms are worth the wait. Smile

So glad to read this thread, we have loads of big green cherry tomatoes and no sign of ripening at all but also lots of new tiny ones starting on the same plants. Going to remove the lower leaves today as had no idea you’re supposed to and see what happens.

Rookiegardener · 24/07/2020 10:38

I had mine in my greenhouse but decided to pop them into the ground a few weeks ago. They just seemed too big for the greenhouse. Perhaps I should have left them

Mine are only just flowering 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

verypeckish · 25/07/2020 18:47

It helps to remove the leaves, as that lets in more light to the clusters of fruit, which helps them ripen.

I'm looking at shedloads of bright green tomatoes too.

Okbutnotgreat · 27/07/2020 20:34

Just thought I’d post that today we noticed they’ve started going a bit orangey so high hopes that they’ll ripen in the sun we’re due this week!

FredaFox · 27/07/2020 20:52

I’m the same, plenty of green fruit but today my first two are on the turn to orange so hopefully red by the weekend if the sun comes out!

Rookiegardener · 27/07/2020 20:56

That sounds very excited fredafox and okbutnotgreat! I really do hope they ripen soon. Mine snapped in the strong winds and heavy rains the last few days. I have some left on a couple of the plants but it is all a bit depressing. Feeling rather deflated. Those that remain are very flimsy so are falling off left right and centre.
