Anyone else struggling with this? They tomatoes grew ages ago but have been stuck at the perfect size and totally green.. seems like they're never ripening

@DisaronnoConnoisseur oooh those look great. What's the big green one? It looks huge. I'm sure your DS must have been pleased.

@cheezy I was thinking of doing this too but it just seems too much work now. I will heed the advice given and stop being so obsessed with them now. My friend who planted the same time as me (but indoors on a patio) has ripe tomatoes now.

The green one is a pepper. He was super excited and ate it all so that's the main positive. Grin

We have progress!! I placed some banana peels a few days ago when I thought I saw some 'less green' looking tomatoes. They are now nice and red. Hopefully in a few days they'll be the deep red they're meant to be.

All of the newer tomatoes are growing to be extremely small and some of them have started to ripen. Any ideas as to why his might be happening? They're the size of blue berries.

I'm slightly disappointed with mine to be honest. They are Gardeners Delight and Alicante, and we have had a couple of ripe fruit now. They were pithy and tasteless. I don't know why, I've grown GD before and they've been amazing.

ListeningQuietly · 10/08/2020 20:07

I do not grow mainstream varieties - their skins are too thick.
My suggestions are

  • Golden Sunrise (yellow salad)
  • Tigerella (stripy salad)
  • Red pear (pear shaped cherry)
  • Black Russian (purple soft skinned beefsteak that CANNOT be beaten)
  • Millefeuille (prolific yellow cherry)
Rookiegardener · 10/08/2020 21:13

@cringeworthit I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe if was the hot/cold/hot summer we've had. I've grown sweet million and the one I've tried so far has been really sweet.

@ListeningQuietly thanks I will give those a go next spring.

Are they in the sunlight as much as possible? I've found them to be finicky buggers unless I put them on 1 specific windowsill that gets loads for a decent length of time.

Rookiegardener · 10/08/2020 23:32

@gamerchick they are but my garden only gets 6 hours of sunlight so they are just about getting enough. As the days shorten I'm not sure what will happen Blush
