What is flowering in your garden right now?

What’s your favourite flower in your garden right now ...or a fortnight ago if you’re in the southern half of the country?

My spring flowers are ending and the summer ones aren’t out yet so the garden looks a bit empty. A peony, a few alliums, some late-planted tulips, bluebells and yellow poppies. What can I plant to fill the gap?

South West

My garden always seems to be behind everyone elses! I never know if I should class where I live as the South East as I'm to the West of London in North Bucks. We have been doing a lot of work in the garden so only have some Iris' flowering at the moment but they are quite spectacular. Don't know where they came from either as I didn't plant them there! My roses and peony are budding but no flowers yet. I've popped my sweet peas out as they have done well in the greenhouse this year. I picked up some pansies from Morrisons and they are doing well.

My gardening ethos is 'it's got two chances, it either grows or it doesn't ' 😀

I have some pansies and French marigolds growing from seed and we'll see how they go. It has been nice to spend some quality time doing the garden up and I'm pleased with what we have done so far.

RingoFlamingo · 20/05/2020 07:15

I'm in the south. My dalmatian bellflower has been flowering for weeks and looks lovely. I've just planted another campanula and am hoping it does as well.

Wallywobbles · 20/05/2020 07:22

Northern France here but all these have been going for a couple of weeks.

We’ve got:

Irises
Granny’s bonnet
Ceocanthus
Broad beans (they’re actually really pretty flowers!)
Clematis
Phlox
Ajuga
Géraniums
I’ve also got some more bedding plants which I potted up last week which are in flower.

Peonies are over ☹️ And my roses are too young to have flowered yet (I planted them bare root in April), but fingers crossed for some later this year.

IllegalFred · 20/05/2020 08:22

We have two clematis Montana, one has finished flowering now the other still going strong (the early one is up a sunny South facing wall). Peonies look great, hardy geraniums just coming into flower, as is the salvia hot lips. The bees are loving the comfrey flowers which is more of a weed in our garden than a plant. Lots of random yellow poppies all over the place too. Violas in pots still going strong, petunias just coming out. Chives, thyme and French beans also flowering. I'm in the Midlands.

PickAChew · 20/05/2020 10:07

Heuchera. The flowers are nothing to look at but the young leaves sre so glossy and pretty. Crap phone pic does them an injustice.

My Choisya is starting to shed its petals though a new one I put in last year is still in flower (surprised at that as it's taken a few years for my other to flower)

Clematis Montana in full bloom and have a few flowers on a new pink one planted last year

Bedding plants arrived in bloom so have some nice colour combinations and a new to me one, lightening sky. Antirihums flowered this week

Have a few poppies showing both DS's Oriental and my wild ones

One of my oriental poppies has come out since yesterday.Smile

The phloxes are nowhere near flowering, I think of them as more of a high summer into late summer plant.
Ajuga reptans has a lot of flower spikes. I'm not sure I like the dark foliage tbh and it's spreading like anything.

Thighdentitycrisis · 20/05/2020 15:04

Nasturtiums here in the south going like crazy
Also
climbing hydrangea,
aquilegia,
pelargonium,
geraniums,
foxglove,
Erigeron
marguerites,
Arum lily
Salvia

Forget me nots have finished

ErrolTheDragon · 20/05/2020 20:33

Candelabra primulas, and there's a rose looking like it may bloom tomorrow.

Feawen · 20/05/2020 21:23

Roses, rosemary and sage are flowering enthusiastically. My wild strawberries are covered in flowers as well as green fruits, so hoping for a bountiful year! Lilac is just over and choisya is shedding petals. Lavender is just about to bloom.

And I have one solitary pink Dianthus flower that’s brave enough for ten Smile. Hopefully there’ll be more later.

Feawen · 20/05/2020 21:24

Oh, and bleeding heart is still going strong, it’s had fountains of flowers since late March

Thecazelets · 20/05/2020 21:39

Roses are doing really well
Tree peonies and normal peonies doing much better this year
A few left over rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas
Alliums (already going to seed)
Honeysuckle
One clematis has finished but 2 more just starting; sometimes get a second flowering on the first one
Lilac (but on its way out)
Some of the lavender
A few Salvia hotlips
some white campanula in window boxes

Tulips long gone and apart from a few annuals and some anemones in tubs we've only really got the hibiscus, jasmine, hydrangeas and agapanthus to look forward to now - it all seems to have happened so quickly this year. At least we've been at home to enjoy them though.

My ceanothus, hypericum, vibernum and flowering cherry all died off recently - it's been very distressing...

Noflora · 20/05/2020 22:21

Goodness Thecazelets how traumatic. If I lost those there would be serious holes in my garden, 7 mature shrubs!

Thecazelets · 20/05/2020 23:27

Yes - it's been horrible. There's been suspected honey fungus in the area (on the street trees) and we think it might be spreading. Sincerely hope not, but my damson and strawberry trees are suddenly not looking very happy either. At this rate I'll have nothing left this time next year!

Evennow · 20/05/2020 23:39

Honesty, rhododendron, geum, red campion, California poppy, primula japonica, pulsatilla, saxifrage, cornflower, pansies, aquilegia

Cornishclio · 20/05/2020 23:46

We are in the South West and in my garden flowering at the moment are
Philadelphus (mock rose)
Lithadora
Cosmos
Roses
Campanula
Aquilegia
Osteospurnum
Rodgersia is almost out

RightOnTheEdge · 20/05/2020 23:50

Lots of lovely Pansies and Violas, my Peony is massive this year and full of blooms and Granny's Bonnet.

Snap Dragons and Foxgloves look like they will open anytime now.

reservoircats · 21/05/2020 09:48

@PickAChew those heuchera are AMAZING. Would you mind telling me the varieties?

Noflora · 21/05/2020 12:41

I love heuchera, the colours can be as bright as any flowers and really contribute after spring bulbs. Today these are making me happy.

Aquilegia and geraniums are doing well at the moment. I also have nemesia and snapdragon that survived the winter now in full bloom but I think they are earlier than they should be. This week my first roses and dahlias flowered too. I need some more spring flowers so thanks for this thread.
