What is flowering in your garden right now?

What’s your favourite flower in your garden right now ...or a fortnight ago if you’re in the southern half of the country?

My spring flowers are ending and the summer ones aren’t out yet so the garden looks a bit empty. A peony, a few alliums, some late-planted tulips, bluebells and yellow poppies. What can I plant to fill the gap?

My alliums are gorgeous (1st year for them and I keep admiring them). Bowles mauve, my hostas are looking good, too I've planted some peonies and some lu puns but it's their first year and no flowers yet.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 19/05/2020 20:15

Lots of roses and peonies, pink cistus and lavender. Honeysuckle not flowering yet. Lots of pots too.

Roseburn · 19/05/2020 20:15

Geums here, not out but budding.

Ive got a bit of garden thats looking lovely but the rest is a bit 'just green' and I was thinking the same as you OP.

I bought some pulmonaria and pink lamium off ebay to try and create some colour - awaiting delivery.

Purplewithred · 19/05/2020 20:19

Have some really nice Osteopurnum in pots and dark pink Geraniums in hanging baskets both in full sun at the front of the house looking great.

WellTidy · 19/05/2020 20:25

And cistus

ErrolTheDragon · 19/05/2020 20:26

My pulmonaria is nearly over.
I've got lily of the valley too, I must go and have a sniff.

PapsofJura · 19/05/2020 20:27

I’m in central Scotland and we currently have bluebells, late flowering daffodils- not sure the variety but they are white with a lovely smell, geraniums are just coming out and azaleas have been out for a few weeks.

peajotter · 19/05/2020 20:37

Lol @ErrolTheDragon , you’re still north but by the sound of it a bit further on than us. I hadn’t realised how much difference latitude made in May. @Bellablahhole you’re right. Such lovely days I feel like summer should be here, but it was frosty last week.

I’m in a new garden and had to cut my Montana down to the ground so hopefully that will fill a gap next year for height. You’ve all reminded me of lots of plants I used to have but forgot how nice they were in May. Off to shop now (online, no garden centres open here yet)

@PapsofJura that’s interesting about the azaleas. I’m central too. I haven’t been out so haven’t seen other gardens but we’ve found some almost dead leggy ones under a leylandi hedge. The hedge is down now but they aren’t flowering so I wasn’t sure when the right time was. Hopefully next year they will be out in May.

Lancashire really is right in the middle of the U.K./British Isles... Scotland is enormous!Grin

BinkySodPlop · 19/05/2020 21:03

Dwarf agapanthus. English (Hidcote) lavender is just flowering. My azalea is just going over and my lilac is gone.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/05/2020 21:05

A couple of weeks ago I had the Montana, forget me nots, honesty (those are both self-seeders) , tulips, pulmonaria, rhododendron, some white narcissi (Thalia) - and the violas. I got lots at the back end of last year for the winter pots and they've just gone on and on.

dementedma · 19/05/2020 21:10

Still cold here in central Scotland so have bluebells, lily of the valley, aquilegia, dandelions, tulips, saxifrage and not much else. The bastard quince has flowered, buds on the honeysuckle, blossom just about finished on the cherry and almond tree..
Lavender nowhere near flowering but the rosemary has

PigletJohn · 19/05/2020 21:16

poppies, peonies, roses.

South.

DulciUke · 19/05/2020 22:14

In New York State here. Virginia Bluebells, last of the trout lilies and the crabapple is covered with buds about to open. (Ridiculously excited about the latter).

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/05/2020 22:43

Hmm, a few weeks ago I had bluebells, last of the daffodils, grape hyacinth, lily of the valley, camellias, primroses, African marigolds, forget me nots, bluebells, cherry blossom, forsythia and the amelanchier. I’m
East Midlands but in woodland and so my garden is always a little behind my friends in the nearest city because it doesn’t get as much light.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 19/05/2020 23:01

Dicentra, geum, nepeta, camellia, lilac, ceanothus, phlox, rose, Armeria, lavender - off the top of my head!!

The phlox this year have been amazing.

I’m in the South East and just coming out in the last week have been the salvia, peonies and lonicera.

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/05/2020 23:07

Bleeding hearts. My favourite plant currently flowering. I have three pink ones.

Tangelo · 19/05/2020 23:08

My alliums are starting to go over to seed, though I love the seed heads and will keep them in the border; my David Austen roses are all in full flower - I've never known them so laden so am also cutting them for the house - - but my other roses still forming buds. Today I even spotted the first two flowers on my passion flower, and my scented pelargoniums are flowering. My garden is always quite early (I'm SW facing in London and the garden has been baking) but this year has been something else! I'm worried there will be nothing left by late summer unless I can somehow convince the snails to leave my dahlias alone.

PickAChew · 19/05/2020 23:12

Markses are selling pots of geum. I picked a couple up yesterday because they're so gorgeous. Looks like they flower right through the summer, too.

Roseburn · 19/05/2020 23:21

Oh I just remembered I also have king cups and astrantia out

Azaleas just beginning but they are in a very shady north facing spot

My White Montana just out - neighbours pink one been out for a couple of weeks

Lovely thread .

Roseburn · 19/05/2020 23:23

Might need an essential trip to Marks to have a look At the geums.

Anactoria · 19/05/2020 23:28

This flowered today in my garden. Purchased from the dead and dying section of the garden centre last year for 50p. Bargain!
