Monty Don has just posted this -

I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died.
He slipped quietly away with no pain or suffering and is now buried in the garden with lots of tennis balls.
Rest now old friend. See you in the sweet bye and bye.

Aww.

I am not a dog person really but I loved just seeing Nigel following Monty around the garden, dozing in the sun sitting in the rain. It is the life I would love if real life didnt get in the way.

So sorry for Monty.

Weepingwillows12 · 12/05/2020 08:21

I just realised my last post reads a bit like I would like to follow monty around like a dog.... I meant more that Montys life would be my dream if I had the chance, including the dogs. Just to clarify Grin

I can't remember the other ones name either! It is a beautiful dog, but doesn't have Nigel's presence or star quality, perhaps it will grow into the role.

(It happened with two of our cats, the second one had always been just that, the second cat, but discovered a feisty new personality when first cat died. There had been more to that relationship than we realised)

ppeatfruit · 12/05/2020 08:35

No it doesn't read like that Weeping .Grin I know what you meant.

We looked after a retriever a couple of times, she was the sweetest, most intelligent dog we've ever had. (we've rescued quite a few!) No trouble at all. If we didn't have to travel quite a bit we'd rescue one like a shot

ppeatfruit · 12/05/2020 08:38

Someone will remember ! Viques

FoolsAssassin · 12/05/2020 08:39

Oh how sad. The other one is Nell.
Saw Monty doing a talk and he was saying how Nigel had broken his back and Supervet had got him back on his feet again.

ppeatfruit · 12/05/2020 08:43

Was that recently Fools ? Yes thank you Nell , nice name.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/05/2020 08:58

I loved Nigel, I'm so sad Sad

Such a wonderful dog

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 12/05/2020 08:59

Yes the other retriever is Nell and the new one is Pattie I think.

Afternooninthepark · 12/05/2020 09:01

Oh no, I love Nigel 💔

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 12/05/2020 09:04

I really hope they do a short tribute to him this Friday although I will be a blubbering mess!

WellTidy · 12/05/2020 09:16

I wonder how much of the filming was completed for this week’s episode before Nigel was taken unwell and died. I can’t imagine how Monty would feel being in the position of having to film in the garden without him so quickly after him passing to make sure that there is enough content. He will be very much missed. Beautiful boy.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 12/05/2020 09:19

Perhaps some of the other presenters will offer to take the burden off him this week Well? Monty is so passionate about keeping the show going though that I expect he would just get through it. Hopefully Nell will be at his side.

Benjispruce · 12/05/2020 09:22

Ahhhh Nigel. Hope he has Nelly still.

ppeatfruit · 12/05/2020 09:29

I'm guessing but it'll probably be Adam Frost this week anyway. They are taking it in turns.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 12/05/2020 12:07

I wonder how Nelly is going to cope without him. Gah! There's only so much misery and suffering I can take. This is too much.

LittleBearPad · 12/05/2020 12:17

It was going to be Monty this week - he said so at the end of last week’s programme. Who knows now?

WellTidy · 12/05/2020 14:07

I hope they will all offer to step in, even if Monty decides that he is up to filming this week. I’m sure they will. Monty seems to have a lovely friendship with Rachel in particular, and with Carol too. It will be tough.

PerplexingWords · 12/05/2020 14:10

I cried actual hot, wet tears at this. A tough day at school, then home to read that. It was too much. I don't think I've ever cried for the loss of someone else's dog before; definitely not for one I have never met.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 15/05/2020 12:36

I'm ready to be a blubbing mess tonight.

GetawayfromthatWelshtart · 15/05/2020 14:24

Monty tweeted that there will be a tribute to Nigel tonight, tissues at the ready peeps!

MutteringDarkly · 15/05/2020 22:02

I hadn't seen this so was taken unawares by tonight's news - the end of the episode had me sniffling.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 15/05/2020 22:05

Me too. When you’re a dog lover and you’ve lost dogs it really hits home. Nigel was so lovely.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/05/2020 10:18

Gosh that tribute. What a great dog. Monty was brave to do that, his voice only wavered a bit.

Not sure the new dog will be up to the job. Nigel was so entertaining with his tennis balls.

ppeatfruit · 18/05/2020 09:27

Yes I watched my recording of it 'twice' With a soggy tissue. Sad I loved Nigel hiding the tennis balls. I had missed those bits in the old programmes. Sad
