Plants that survive in shade?

Hi all, I'm a little clueless when it comes to gardening, I've just ordered some bark for our borders and we're going to fill it with nice tubs as we do each year, the ground is a bit crap due to giant tree roots. We have a corner in the garden that barely gets any sun and I just wondered what plants of flowers I could put there please? Sorry about the crap picture, the bbq is there currently but we're going to move that, put bark down and some bright tubs and I just want it to look as bright and lovely as possible!

Thanks in advance 😊

Ferns, Lily of the valley, snowdrops.

Caramel78 · 11/04/2020 19:10

Foxgloves and forget me nots are fine in the shade

BooseysMom · 11/04/2020 19:11

@rainbow1982 .. that looks like our north-facing corner! I have posted here previously asking for ideas and i got some good advice. You could try ferns or a hydrangea. I planted a tiny Acer Palmatum and hope that will grow. It's sheltered but gets no sun but i found out sun scorches the leaves anyway so that might work there. You could try planting one in a large pot and adding some nice stones.
Good luck and have fun planting

A climbing hydrangea would grow well on the fence.

pandora206 · 11/04/2020 19:14

I'm just planning a North facing border with a woodland theme. On my list so far I have ferns, hostas, primroses and spring bulbs such as snowdrops and muscari.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/04/2020 19:15

Hellebores. My absolute favourite. Lovely leaves and beautiful flowers in the winter.

GCAcademic · 11/04/2020 19:17

I got a lot of ideas from my north-facing border from this website:

In the order that they will flower throughout the year, the things that do well in shade in my garden are:

Snowdrops (spring bulbs are all fine in shade but snowdrops are suited to shade)
Star magnolia
Bergenia
Viburnum
Foxgloves

Ferns all year round
Cornus too

Bookworm75 · 11/04/2020 19:31

I would suggest an acuba japonica shrub. Some people don't like them but I think they are fab for a dark corner - they are evergreen so you have interest all year round, and if you choose one of the varieties which has a lot of yellow variagation on its green leaves it will really brighten up a shady spot. They're easy to keep to whatever size you'd like as well.

FlamingoAndJohn · 11/04/2020 19:33

My garden goes from south facing sun all day at the top to deep shade at the bottom.
Ferns do well as do foxgloves. Bleeding hearts (I can’t remember the proper name) are very good too. Hostas do well but are basically slug food.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 11/04/2020 19:35

I have Hydrangea & Japanese anemones in shade. Both do well.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 11/04/2020 19:50

In addition to the other suggestions, you could check out Skimmia, my favourite is Kew Green at the moment

Beebumble2 · 11/04/2020 20:33

Cranesbill geraniums do well in the shade.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 11/04/2020 21:27

I second hellebores. Also lilies can sometimes do well in shade even though they usually say to put them in sun.

LizzieSiddal · 11/04/2020 21:29

Hydrangeas are great in the shade.

WellTidy · 11/04/2020 21:30

Posted too soon

After the foxgloves:
Cranesbill
Japanese anemones

Dicentra and Astilbe are happy with mostly shade. My camellias are also happy in the shade but they do get a little sun for about an hour each day.

Titsywoo · 11/04/2020 21:33

Rhododendrons flower even in complete shade. I have 2 that are now between a large hedge and the back of a shed and they are still going!

WellTidy · 11/04/2020 21:33

Some euphorbias will be fine in shade too. Be careful though as they self seed and spread, so keep them under control.

Honeywort · 11/04/2020 21:37

with pots and containers I often bring plants on in the sun, then when it’s looking really lovely I move it to the shade, treating the display a bit l8ke a vase of flowers - they last better if they are kept cool. Tulips do really well like this

missanony · 11/04/2020 21:38

Portugal laurel

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 11/04/2020 21:42

Oh yes Dicentra is lovely. Mine died last year though Sad

peajotter · 11/04/2020 21:42

Add something evergreen too. Ideally something variegated or with paler leaves. So it doesn’t look too empty in the winter.

If you’re using pots you can move them around. I have pots under my washing line in a sunny area when the plants are small. I move them to the main area, which is shady, once they flower. This works really well for plants like lillies, as the flowers last longer in shade. You can grow many more different plants this way.

Twixes · 11/04/2020 21:55

Hostas, ferns, hydrangea - all mentioned previously.

But two not mentioned are: Solomon's seal, astilbe
