What very easy flowers can I grow with my son?

What seeds can I easily attempt to grow in the garden with my son this year? I've bought a packet of dwarf sunflowers seeds, but wondered what else I should order to try to grow?

Ideally anything that will add a bit of colour to the patio, as I'm not expecting to visit a garden centre any time soon.

Thanks

Nasturtions give a lot of bang for your buck and will go on forever.
Plus they are edible.

Caramel78 · 06/04/2020 11:31

Dahlias are easy to grow and very colourful. The bees love them too

Fleetheart · 06/04/2020 11:31

Busie lizzies, really easy to grow and great colours

FadedRed · 06/04/2020 11:33

Salad leaves that can be eaten. They grow quickly and can be ‘cropped’ a few times. Watercress on a flannel and sprouting seeds in a jam jar.

squashyhat · 06/04/2020 11:34

Dahlias are not normally grown from seed. Marigolds (English or French) are very easy. Also sweet peas (need some support)

Caramel78 · 06/04/2020 11:37

I grow my dahlias from seed. Sutton’s and Mr Fothergills sell them and they have always worked really well. I have grown them from tubers too and they also worked well

Frankiecandle · 06/04/2020 11:37

Nasturtiums. Plus butterflies love them and often lay their eggs on them, so if you don't mind the caterpillars eating them when they hatch it's a great nature lesson too.

LIZS · 06/04/2020 11:38

Sweet peas, make a basic tripod to support them.

LuluJakey1 · 06/04/2020 11:38

Nasturtiums, Forget-me-nots, Hollyhocks- but you would need small plants. Tomatoes?

eddiemairswife · 06/04/2020 11:45

I second nasturtiums, but if you eat them check under the leaves, because little black flies often congregate there.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/04/2020 11:47

Cerinthe major. Big seeds, germinate easily, grow fast, look really lovely with a silvery foliage and dark blue flowers.

mummmy2017 · 06/04/2020 11:49

Grow so cress.
We got a pot of bulbs from Tesco as well.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 06/04/2020 11:50

Sweet peas, cosmos, poppy, different kinds of sunflower, aquilegia, all easily grown from seeds. I've just thrown a packet of wildflower seeds over a bed in my garden, they'll all spout soon and attract lots of bees and butterflies

viques · 06/04/2020 11:59

Nasturtiums, germinate quite quickly and spectacular growth. Ditto morning glory if you can get hold of the seeds.

I would also plant beans (French beans for taste, but runner or broad beans for growth) Cress, radish , lettuce also good because they are quick and you can eat them. If you grow broad beans do the growing in a jam jar with tissues thing with a couple of the seeds, will show him what happens when a seed grows.

GuyFawkesDay · 06/04/2020 12:00

Nasturtiums
Marigolds
Sweet peas if you have some canes
Nigella
Beans or peas

viques · 06/04/2020 12:02

PS, try to get hold of some normal size sunflower seeds as well, the whole point is how tall they get! Save the seed heads, or leave them on the stem, birds love them.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 06/04/2020 12:06

Zinnias are great seed flowers - bright and colourful

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/04/2020 12:08

Are zinnias easy to germinate? Di you start them off inside?

I tried once, it was a disaster and I gave up. Love them though.

frostedviolets · 06/04/2020 12:14

Cornflowers, poached egg plants, marigold, nasturtiums, sunflowers are all bright and easy

Caramel78 · 06/04/2020 13:39

I’ve grown zinnias successfully the last 3 years and have always started them off inside x

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/04/2020 13:40

Thanks!

Is it too late to do it now?

Caramel78 · 06/04/2020 14:20

My zinnia seed packet says to sow indoors between March-may so you’ll be fine

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/04/2020 14:26

Thanks, will order some.

ritzbiscuits · 06/04/2020 14:55

Thanks very much all! Sorry, been in Zoom meetings and come back to all these lovely comments.

Where are the best places to buy seeds online, ideally with cheapest delivery?

@viques I've purposely got dwarf ones this year as I've had two failed years of trying to grow the tall ones. God knows why?!
