I need a distraction from all the news, so tell me about your garden and your plans. I think maybe some of us will be spending more time in the garden this year.

I have a big garden. I don't know where I'd be without it, for my mental health. It is a lot of work but it keeps me busy and it is nice to be outside.

Currently I am tidying up from winter. We have lots of trees so everything is covered in leaves.

Tell me about your garden, and your plans?

Hello everyone. Just to,let you know I've come across the new now corona zone' for just this type of chat. It's rather lovely. You lot might want to pop over and say hello

lightlypoached · 26/03/2020 01:41

'Non corona zone'. Damn autocorrect.

I live in the US and where we are we're very behind the UK for spring.

Amazingly we're having really mild weather this year - we need something good atm. I currently have snowdrops out and the first few crocuses are budding.
As I'm WFH now I've had some time to get out there and start doing the spring tidy. It will be a while before the grass needs cutting - it's often May before the first cut happens.

I have an acre and most of it is REALLY rough grass over very uneven ground, clay-ey soil and highly alkaline. I had a plan to start putting in flower beds (big ones) with some BIG shrubs to provide the backdrop & give some shade. But obviously I can't get materials right now. I need mulch by the cubic yard, and 10 feet bushes aplenty.

Over the last 2 years I put in about 200 spring bulbs, but they can hardly be seen as it's such a vast, bare space. I'll post some photos soon - it's pretty much just a field.

I am not planning to cut the grass, at least until the autumn , partly because it would generate yet more garden waste that o can't get rid of , but primarily because it's meant to be really good for wild flowers insects and wildlife

Hi Adora!

I spent ages out in the garden Ystd it looks loads better for it. Have tidied up pots and put some more pansies out.

We have a little put up green house so have started to put the bigger seedlings in there. I'm glad I picked up seeds before this all kicked off...

I'm thinking the supermarkets will still sell summer bedding plants and compost?! I really hope so anyway.

We are extremely lucky garden wise and have a large lawn. I'm going to leave half of it to grow long like they were encouraging on Beechgrove and Gardener's world last year. Apparently even just keeping it slightly longer is very beneficial to wildlife. I'm going to cut around the edges and some paths through the middle so that it looks deliberate and then not mow that area at all.

I have a very long boundary with one neighbour, nearly 100 feet. I'm leaving about a 10 feet-deep edge where I have several large bushes (don't know the names of all of them) and long grass, I pile up branches there, and last year I planted over 100,000 wildflower seeds. The packets said that it would be the second year before many of them flowered, so I'm hoping to see some this year.

unfortunately, the grass that grows to about 2' tall, and the deer may mean I never really get to see them.

Maydayredalert · 27/03/2020 17:56

100000 @KickAssAngel that sounds amazing! I hope you get to see some.

Another lovely day here today, so not much activity here. I spent ages sitting on my terrace with a cuppa which was lovely.

There are so many primroses and daffodils in my orchard. I meant to take a picture to show you all as they are so cheery. Tomorrow maybe. Not like I've got much else on Grin

I've been busy in the garden over the past week. Mainly just pottering/weeding/mulching etc. The best sort of gardening !

Didn't think we had space for any veg or fruit in the beds but have found a few spots - all in good sun - so have popped in some broad beans, comfrey, and borage seeds. Reserved a nice spot in one of the beds for strawberries which I've ordered, but have since heard that they prefer a bit of shade so I'm not sure if it'll be the best place.

Managed to get quite a few very large containers and bags of compost a few weeks back for growing on the patio. I've sowed lettuce and spinach in one, round carrots and radish in another, broad beans, and early peas. Today I'm going to sow onions, beetroot and potentially some potato peelings that have rooted. I'm still waiting for seed potatoes to arrive so thought I'd give that a try anyway.

KickAssAngel · 28/03/2020 14:11

It is pouring with rain here. There are puddles on my lawn.

I have a gardening question - I have seeds for spring planting, but no compost/soil as it's only just time to start with that. Once it stops raining, can I did up some earth from the garden and use that? Or is there a magic ingredient in bags of soil that I need to start growing seeds? There's no chance of me getting plants/bulbs etc atm, so remembering where I 'safely' stored some seeds and using them are my only chance for anything new this year.

livingthegoodlife · 28/03/2020 15:58

I've had a busy gardening day today. I've weeded the driveway (boring job but it looks much tidier) and weeded my five veggie beds out the back (much more fun!). I've got seedlings galore and plug plants arriving by post - hopefully!

@KickAssAngel I'm not sure? I guess soil is better than nothing. Can you mail order plants & compost where you are? Might be worth it if you can.

KickAssAngel · 28/03/2020 18:48

My parents say I should add some coffee grounds to keep it fine. I may give it a try as I have time on my hands.

Albern · 30/03/2020 08:02

Hi all, works been manic but my greenhouse is my sanctuary, we have been building another raised bed this weekend and I've ordered some more seeds. Things are happening in the greenhouse and my calendula and calibrese and just coming through. Take care everybody.

AdoraBell · 03/04/2020 21:54

Hi 👋

Glad you’re enjoying your garden. I haven’t done much but will make more effort this weekend.

wonderrotunda · 03/04/2020 22:23

Hi I’m struggling to find somewhere I can buy plug plants (left the seeds a bit late!) any suggestions?! Places seem to be struggling with demand

LavenderLilacTree · 03/04/2020 23:18

Not plants in my garden, but we have tried wild garlic for the first time this week. Got it on our daily walk. Made a lovely pesto with it.
I was worried I might have made a mistake with plant ID and poisoned everyone, but all was well!
