A distraction! Talk about your garden plans

I need a distraction from all the news, so tell me about your garden and your plans. I think maybe some of us will be spending more time in the garden this year.

I have a big garden. I don't know where I'd be without it, for my mental health. It is a lot of work but it keeps me busy and it is nice to be outside.

Currently I am tidying up from winter. We have lots of trees so everything is covered in leaves.

Tell me about your garden, and your plans?

I

So lovely to read about other people's gardens and the joy they give, some wonderful colour schemes too. My garden is tiny. There's a small patch where I grow beans, strawberries, loganberries (thugs!), rhubarb and a few other veg. Last year I put some kalettes in, they really only came into their own during the last few weeks but I think earned their place. The rest of the scant space is taken up by a small patio, wild life pond and flowerbeds. It is compact but very private and I love it.

This is such a lovely thread - - love hearing about people's gardens and stealing ideas! I was also digging veg beds today at my allotment but sadly not taking home loads of potatoes like you @HasaDigaEebowai! We do have a few Strawberries struggling on tho tbh they don't much like our clay.

@xanthippe8 I have some kalette seeds I bought on a whim - - glad to hear they went well for you. I'm going to plan them into the beds now. They look interesting! Were they delicious?

@DaphneduM your day sounds really lovely! It's very kind to say I'm knowledgeable - - enthusiastic is probably more like it. I haven't propagated a penstemon before: I'll use your tips and hopefully get a few more to cram in somehow Grin

I spent a lot of time in my garden today, it's a small garden but I pack quite a lot in 😁

I mowed the lawn, raked up lots of moss and pulled out weeds, then put down some grass seed on the bald patches.

I scattered some seeds on a new bed at the end of the garden and put in two new roses 🌹

Also put together my mini greenhouse to put my seedlings out tomorrow (if it's another nice day.)

Bit worried about my magnolia tree, it's very small but usually has flowered by now 😕

These are pics from last summer...

Tangelo They were/are lovely, a cross between a sprout and kale, and expensive in shops in my area, well worth giving a go.

xanthippe8 · 22/03/2020 22:39

Looks like you really are making the most of your garden Girlie!

YourVagesty · 22/03/2020 22:43

Getting a new gazebo for the hot tub - a nice one with curtains and retractable roof! Spent all afternoon poring over options.

More practically, we've sorted out the veg patch and greenhouse today for: tomatoes, peppers, brocolli, herbs, cabbages, garlic, beans, pumpkins, peppers, carrots, kale., etc...had a proper 'good life-y' afternoon digging the beds up!

YourVagesty · 22/03/2020 22:46

Also, we've planted rhubarb roots and a new apple tree.

Need to 're-fence the front garden and get a couple of nice potted trees for either side of the door.

Maydayredalert · 23/03/2020 09:23

@Girliefriendlikespuppies your garden is lovely!

A new apple tree sounds great @YourVagesty what variety did you get?

I've just been out with the kids to plant some tomatoes, and reported a rose that I grew from a cutting last year. I'd love to be better with cuttings, I can only do rose and hydrangea and they are always hit and miss.

Newbie, place marking.

Large garden but it’s clay. I have apple trees, inherited, and border plants including lots of rosemary and some wild flowers. Have managed to grow potatoes and spring onions in pots indoors. Cannot keep a thyme plant alive though 🤦‍♀️

Maydayredalert · 23/03/2020 09:28

Welcome @AdoraBell! Flowers

Ohhh may I join as well?👩‍🌾
Love gardening- my dh just build mud kitchen for our children to entertain them.
I'm more about frugal gardening and making my garden children suitable. Our garden is a decent size.
Want to create more sensory outdoor activities.
Also some veggies and more flowers.
Have lovely pink and white climbing roses- it just makes me happy.

Its so nice to look out of our kitchen window now that the vegetable garden is in a better state. We're working from home and the DC are on a strict school remote learning timetable (teens) but we've decided to do at least an hour a day in the garden. By the end of this our garden should look the best it ever has!

Just annoyed with myself that we didn't get a greenhouse when we could have. Fortunately we have lots of sunny window ledges.

That tyre is a great idea! My husband is building my kids a playground at the moment - I'll suggest a tyre somewhere!

I planted a fuschia that was a MD gift in the garden too.

@HasaDigaEebowai I think there will be a lot more beautiful gardens this summer!

Can I join and ask questions?

We distracted ourselves at the weekend digging over the garden
Last year we dug up loads of potatoes but most were tiny, so we left them to sprout and have planted them ( didn't want to go shopping )
The soil is pretty sandy, used loads of compost and home made compost , it still seems sandy
What did we do wrong last year...how might we get more bigger eatable potatoes ?

Maydayredalert · 23/03/2020 20:13

Thriving rhymes sounds like some sort of rave! Flowers

@midgebabe yes absolutely please do ask away! I have never grown potatoes so can't help but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon!

Oh bugger.

My £200 of plants I ordered I in January aren't coming, are they?

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/03/2020 07:58

They might arrive. Some deliveries will still come.

midgebabe · 24/03/2020 08:26

Yeah, I ordered a huge selection of seeds at the weekend ...hopefully somethings will grow...and I have loads of ground ready dug for them so I hope the do come

Deliveries are allowed as it's easier to manage distancing for the staff but might take longer

DoubleAction · 24/03/2020 08:29

Will we be able to get garden supplies? I.e. will they be considered essential?

My garden plan usually consists of trying to keep it more or less tidy. Maybe this year I could do better than that.

Maydayredalert · 25/03/2020 19:01

I've been out today, clearing brambles and last year's bindweed, and pruned a couple of crabapples.

Hasn't the weather been lovely the last few days!
