Rose for shade - north facing front garden

Has anyone got any suggestions for a rose that would cope well in shade? Id like to plant a bare root one in my new house this autumn. It has a small front garden that is overshadowed by the front of the house so I’m not sure if I’m being unrealistic? Thanks.

Madame Alfred carrière is a white climbing rose which apparently does ok in north-facing bed. If it’s in a ‘rain shadow’ from the house that might be more challenging.

Didiusfalco · 07/08/2019 19:20

Thank you, I’m not entirely sure whether it’s in a rain shadow or not, as we’ve not completed yet. It’s a bit of an 80s box so I need to make it look more appealing! A climber could be lovely.

The north wall of my house has Rosa Mundi, red with pink and white stripes stripes. It's not a repeat flowerer. It grows and flowers very vigorously but is inclined to mildew if it gets too dry.

Gloire de Dijon does very well on the north facing wall of my house.

phenomenalcat · 07/08/2019 21:29

I researched this and went for Rosa New Dawn. Can be grown on a north facing wall, in partial shade and is a lovely pink with medium fragrance. I'm going to grow a complimentary clematis with it.

Thank you all. I’m going to look into those.

I have Golden Showers and Generous Gardener on my N Facing wall.
Both are perfumed, repeat flowering and doing well.

hoochymamgu · 08/08/2019 06:52

Sounds lovely Didius Smile I have a James Galway and a Claire Austin on a north facing fence that are rampaging away. Also have a Mme Alfred Carrierre on an east facing wall. I followed advice and planted them about a foot away from the wall but leaning in, ifswim Wink

Didiusfalco · 08/08/2019 08:32

@hoochymamgu @Beebumble2 thank you both for replying. I do love a David Austin rose and Golden Showers looks lovely too. Can’t wait to get started on my new garden.

Generous gardener, lovely fragrance, bunches and bunches of flowers pale pink, and as long as it’s fed and pruned appropriately doesn’t mind the shade at all

Shadowboy · 08/08/2019 08:41

If you go into the David Austin website, you can select your ‘conditions’ and it will work out the roses to suit. We have two on a north facing wall from David Austin- a rambler and a climber. Both have done beautifully

Thank you, another mention of the generous gardener - I must go and read about that. @Shadowboy yours are beautiful, thank you for posting pictures - what are they? Is the yellow ‘Malvern Hills’ or ‘the Pilgrim’?

OP posts:
Shadowboy · 08/08/2019 12:25

The yellow is Malvern hills- believe it or not it had only been in 14 months in those pictures! The pink is the Albrighton Rambler. The posts are 9ft tall for perspective

hoochymamgu · 08/08/2019 16:26

@Shadowboy those roses are beautiful, and the posts are such a good idea. We're really overlooked so that's given me food for thought Grin

I've just planted an Iceberg white climbing rose which says it has a RHS award. It's in deep shade most of the day with just a couple of hours of sun a day at the most. I added a handful of rose fertiliser when i planted it and it started growing quickly but now seems to have mildew. No flowers as yet. Good luck with the rose you decide upon

Her0utdoors · 08/08/2019 18:02

I've got Rosa New Dawn, it's a bit of a bruts, I don't think I'd want to keep it in check on the front of a house. It does look glorious, although it's fragrance is totally out shone by the Zephin a Druin (sp?) on the other side of the garden.

Didiusfalco · 08/08/2019 18:58

Thank you all. My peter beales catalogue has just arrived, which has so many lovely options it’s going to keep me entertained for some time Smile

They look lovely.

Would anyone know if they would grow in a large container or is planted in soil the only way? Thanks.

Didiusfalco · 08/08/2019 20:59

I’ve been looking at the website following this thread - There are definitely quite a few David Austin options that are good for pots, some really lovely ones!

@ Didius, thank you. Will check out that website.

Want to plant a rose in my late mum's memory, she loved yellow and cream flowers. No more room out back, it's choc a bloc, but front is paved and the sides are full already with lavendar and other shrubs!

Two big pots either side of the front door would be fantastic!

Beebumble2 · 09/08/2019 07:28

I have two climbing roses in large planters either side of my back door. They do well, as long as they are fed and watered well.

Outsomnia · 09/08/2019 19:17

@Beebumble2,

Thanks!

BooseysMom · 11/08/2019 20:50

Has anyone had any issues with mildew on roses? My new climbing rose called 'Iceberg' is covered and i keep pulling the affected leaves off as i have read, but at this rate there'll be none left! Thanks

Fucksandflowers · 15/08/2019 08:37

I thought all roses did okay in shade?
I have a beautiful red one in the shade; don't know the variety and lots of 'Arthur bell' some of which are in full sun and some in partial shade.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/08/2019 10:41

Has anyone had any issues with mildew on roses? Tends to happen if the roots aren't getting enough water. Doesn't seem to have long term effects, just unsightly. The one growing against the wall of the house (soil at the base of a wall tends to be dry) gets it every year, but has now filled the 3ft wide bed for a distance of 15 feet.
