Hi all, once again I need the help of mumsnet gardening experts. We have this leafy thing out front which has flowered for the first time this year. Does anyone know what it is and weather the huge sticks will ever look pretty (or should they be chopped down?). Thank you x

Apologies but it doesn't seem to want to post the picture.

Looks like emperor crocrosmia . Comes out bright orange in late summer / autumn.

PanannyPanoo · 12/07/2019 19:24

crocosmia, flowers orange/red in the summer, very low maintainance.

Looks like crocosmia/montbretia to me, judging by the flower at the back.

It is a colourful plant, but can spread everywhere if you are not careful.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 12/07/2019 19:30

The plant looks the same as a crocosmia but the flower stems are 6 foot high. I cropped the picture to try and maintain some privacy. Do the emporer variety grow that tall?

OP posts:
StumpyinSomerset · 12/07/2019 19:35

It's crocosmia.I have it in my garden.

Outsomnia · 12/07/2019 19:39

It looks a mature plant to me, so yes the flower stems will grow high.

Enjoy, but watch it doesn't spread everywhere. Unless you want it to!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 12/07/2019 19:51

Our neighbour has 6 foot high crocosmia. It's very low maintenance and spreads like wildfire into my garden.

NanTheWiser · 12/07/2019 21:41

Your photo crop doesn't give an idea of the scale, and it does look vaguely like Crocosmia, but I'm fairly sure that it is a Phormium tenax variety. These DO grow to 6 feet tall with large flower spikes, are those the sticks you refer to? Once the flowers have dried and finished you can certainly cut them off.

UniversalTruth · 12/07/2019 22:19

I agree, phormium. Previous owner planted two small ones in our front garden and I have to hack it back every 6 months to prevent neighbours reporting me to the triffid police.

wowfudge · 12/07/2019 22:36

The flowers are definitely crocosmia. Either it is crocosmia or you've got crocosmia with phormium behind it.

Leah2005 · 12/07/2019 22:46

It's definitely phormium. I have two in my front garden - I'd take a photo of the "sticks" but it's dark and wine.

Ohyesiam · 12/07/2019 22:48

Sticks?

NomDeQwerty · 12/07/2019 22:52

100% phormium.

nakedscientist · 13/07/2019 10:14

Crocosmia

NanTheWiser · 13/07/2019 10:48

PHORMIUM!!! The flower buds showing are NOT Crocosmia.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 13/07/2019 12:30

Thank you, phormium it is xx not much scope for spreading as its surrounded by pavement and it does look striking.

And yes the sticks are an inch thick and are the flower stalks. Wondering if I can dry them and use them as canes in the back garden.

The leaves are green, the big 6 foot things definately look like sticks. Zoom in.

NanTheWiser · 13/07/2019 15:39

The STEMS won't be sturdy enough to use as canes, I'm afraid...
