What is this growing out of my lawn - worried it's Japanese knotweed

Hi,
I have tried to post this three times, but it's not letting me so will try to add photo to next message.

I have something growing out of my lawn and I don't know what it is. It has a woody root system and seems to be getting worse.

Can anyone identify it for me as I am a little worried.

Thanks

I'm no expert but it doesn't look like JK to me - the edges of the leaves are slightly notched whereas JK leaf edges are smooth, and JK has a reddish stem, this doesn't. I don't know what it is though, sorry.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 26/06/2019 17:14

Hmm.... doesn't look like JKW to me, have you got nettles? Could be dock if so.

BikeRunSki · 26/06/2019 17:14

Has it got red stems?

NotMaryWhitehouse · 26/06/2019 17:15

Has it got a tap root? One long thick stem with whisky little thin ones coming off it?

wobbegong · 26/06/2019 17:16

nope, stems are not red. phew.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 26/06/2019 17:17

Whispy, even! 🙄

SirVixofVixHall · 26/06/2019 17:18

That isn’t Japanese Knotweed. Not sure what it is though, looks almost like a hydrangea.

Unremarkable · 26/06/2019 17:20

Not knot weed. Have you got other trees and bushes around? It looks like a something that will be a cherry or philadelphus, possibly sprouting from and exposed/damaged larger root.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 26/06/2019 17:25

Looks like a hydrangea to me too. A google suggests it may be a perilla?

LadyLuna16 · 26/06/2019 17:32

Oh thank you for replying!

Phew! It is really all over the lawn.

I have just dug some more up and here is the root and some sprouts.

Is there a large version of that plant nearby? It looks like runners from something else popping up.

RuffleCrow · 26/06/2019 17:46

Dock leaves?

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 26/06/2019 18:02

I also thought Hydrangea. Perhaps a big one got cut down and lots of roots left behind.

LadyLuna16 · 26/06/2019 18:02

@onalongsabbatical I saw the other thread had loads of messages and was wondering when someone would reply to me Grin

Thanks for replies everyone. I will ask my mum as she is pretty good at this stuff as well.

We have a lot of rose bushes and wondered if it was that, but not sure the leaves are right.

God it’s root is horrific
I’ve no idea what it is but excited to find out

NotMaryWhitehouse · 26/06/2019 18:36

Hmm... not ground elder either- although it looks like it is spreading like that bloody does 🙄

NotMaryWhitehouse · 26/06/2019 18:37

You could ask a neighbour- if you have it, they likely have, or had, it!

LadyLuna16 · 26/06/2019 18:50

My mum said mint. It's not mint.

Root is really awful. Just tried to dig up another bit and couldn't even get to the root it's so deep.

'Tis a mystery - how will we ever solve it?

There is nothing like it in the garden. Will check with neighbour.

orangeshoebox · 26/06/2019 18:53

are there trees nearby?
could be suckers from it.

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/06/2019 18:58

Sucker from a nearby tree. Cherries are the usual culprits.

LadyLuna16 · 26/06/2019 18:59

We have a plum tree and a willow tree.

OP posts:
HerSymphonyAndSong · 26/06/2019 19:09

I bet it’s the plum - are the leaves similar?

Al203 · 26/06/2019 19:18

I was just about to say damson when I saw the picture, but I bet it is from your plum. They have put a lot of suckers out this year.
