What is this growing out of my lawn - worried it's Japanese knotweed

Hi,
I have tried to post this three times, but it's not letting me so will try to add photo to next message.

I have something growing out of my lawn and I don't know what it is. It has a woody root system and seems to be getting worse.

Can anyone identify it for me as I am a little worried.

Thanks

Get the plant identifier app, it'll usually give you a couple of suggestions if it doesn't know outright.

We have loads of suckers on our lawn from an ornamental cherry (useless thing gets half a dozen flowers which last about a day). They look very similar but have a reddish tinge. In fact I started my own thread asking the same thing a few years ago and still haven’t got rid of it.

OK. Bit more of a google and they are indeed plum tree suckers.

Not sure what to do now, but at least we know what they are!

Definitely plum suckers, I've spent hours trying to get rid of them in my lawn. I now just keep mowing them off!

Another vote for the 'mow it off' method... I have the same 'sucker issue' with a cherry tree belonging to my neighbours.

The other day I overheard someone talking about being unexpectedly charged for a plant ID app (I suppose there are several?) and I was tempted to butt in and recommend MN Gardening instead.Grin

Ah - if they are suckers then don't use weedkiller otherwise it might kill the tree as well.

@Errol PictureThis wants me to subscribe for £1.79 a WEEK! 😂

CorporeSarnie · 29/06/2019 17:45

Just mow it regularly, it will keep doing it but if you get them when they're small you'll keep on top

We have lots - plum or cherry mini trees
