Any idea why my tomato plants aren't growing?

I planted three tomato plants two weeks ago in a gro bag and they haven't grown at all!

They look healthy and have shoots on the top but they are still tiny.

I watered them regularly (haven't bothered this week obviously).

It's getting so late I think I have no chance of getting tomatoes now Sad

Tomatoes take a while to start and thrive on lots of sunlight and heat. They really do best in hot weather. How's the weather been where you are?

Whistle73 · 15/06/2019 12:50

Utterly miserable this last week but the week before was a good mix of sun and showers I thought...

Ah hopefully they just need a bit of patience and sunshine then.

Thanks Smile

I'm actually amazed you can grow them in the UK. Mine don't really get growing well until we have consistent temps above 30 degrees or so.

Georgiemcgeorgeface · 16/06/2019 10:04

Mine aren't doing so well either I think it's the lack of sun!

CottonSock · 16/06/2019 10:05

Mine look very sad.

drspouse · 16/06/2019 10:08

I have two lots of tomatoes that are doing OK but they are under glass: one lot in a mini greenhouse and one lot under a cold frame aka an old window propped up against the wall.
It has been VERY cold for the season.

gamerchick · 16/06/2019 10:08

I grow mine in the house now, one of the rooms get unusable during summer because it heats up to unbearable levels. They love it in there.

Just don't put them next to strawberry plants. Those things are a murderer of tomato plants.

QueenBeee · 16/06/2019 10:11

Too cold probably, it's been in mid teens centigrade so too cold, but maybe they are forming roots and will shoot away if it warms up.

wannabebetter · 16/06/2019 10:29

Mine are in the shed against the window and are huge - I think they need more heat than you'd think - also my mums tip is water regularly, don't let them dry out in between as they like consistent moisture level (and her Toms are always fab!!)

slalomsuki · 16/06/2019 10:30

Mine are in a small greenhouse on the sunny side of the house. The door is open all the time to let insects in and the heat out if it overheats in the sun as well as the roof raising if it's warm.

But they are all leaves and only a few flowers so not much hope of tomatoes. The 2 tomatoes I have are very low down and clearly were a product of when they were seedlings on the windowsill in the kitchen. Strawberry's are not much better either.

RaininSummer · 16/06/2019 10:50

Just too cold and gloomy this year. My tomatoes and courgettes are just sitting there looking sad.

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/06/2019 10:55

You've just planted them in a growbag - they'll start by putting on root growth and getting well bedded in, and only then will they start top growth.

Mine are doing well in a greenhouse and are early this year - that means I have flower buds. (But I'm in the frozen north).

Fortheloveofscience · 16/06/2019 11:02

Yeah my tomatoes are uninspiring this year. And it’s completely normal for them to sit for a month after planting not doing much and then suddenly start to grow upwards, as long as they’ve got green, healthy-looking leaves just keep them watered (not hard in this weather!) and watch.

Whistle73 · 16/06/2019 18:17

Ooh fab, thanks for all the replies. I am reassured. I'm used to not picking ripe tomatoes until late September so I don't mind waiting as long as I get some in the end Smile

In weather like this they are probably turning a bit purple and shivering. They actually do go a bit purple if it is cold. They will pick up with some warmth.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/06/2019 18:24

All my veg is looking sad and cold. The tomatoes have stopped growing and have strange webbed leaves, the courgette is shivering and my sweet peas are dying off.

I’ve been in the garden in between showers today and it’s darn cold. Mid June and it’s chilly. They all need warmth and sunshine. If it ever shows up we may get some growth.

myfingersarenotsogreen · 16/06/2019 18:27

Mine are in a mini greenhouse and are just about ok. i’m sure they were twice this size last year!

Unless things improve I’ll have to dig out the recipe for green tomato chutney.

TheFlis12345 · 16/06/2019 22:35

I think it also depends on the variety. I have 3 types on the go, all of which were sowed at the same time. One lot are going absolutely mental, growing like triphids and covered in flowers. One type started very slow but have had a big growth spurt in the last week or so. The last lot are growing at a snails pace.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/06/2019 23:13

I have gardeners delight and sun gold, both have stopped growing after initial good growth.

drspouse · 17/06/2019 09:53

I bought Lateh and Supice seeds which are both cold weather varieties. They are doing OK but not stellar under my cold frames - I think in a warm year I'd get fruit by now but I'm quite glad I chose them given the weather this year! Last year I had Gardener's Delight which I didn't plant till about May and I got nothing at all. Not a single even green fruit.

Footle · 17/06/2019 15:23

@gamerchick , tell me more about what strawberry plants do to tomatoes.

Whistle73 · 13/07/2019 13:21

Four weeks later and a real difference! First tomatoes spied today Smile

Hooray!

Whistle73 · 13/07/2019 23:03

Do I start feeding them now or wait until a few more baby toms appear? There's about two at the moment of a few mm in diameter.
