My garden is looking very green and vibrant today.

I can see:
Apple blossom
Camellia (although the flowers are starting to drop)
Forget me nots
Lungwort
Hellebores are hanging on
Euphorbia are doing their limey green thing and perking up one corner
Bluebells
Chaenomeles

What can you see? And what region are you in? (And I might nick your ideas Grin)

I am very hopeful about a deep bed of hydrangeas - about 8 of them.

I planted it 2 years ago. Last year not one of them flowered, although they became very large and healthy looking.

This year they are all covered in buds. I have my fingers crossed. Any tips for maximising their chances?

Apart from them, we have lots of lovely lupins out at the moment. Some peonies still going, roses and geraniums. I have today bought 6 stocks to put in a bed at the bottom of the garden, hoping for lots of scent.

I always wish I had planted alliums. I visited a house the other week where the entire garden was full of them - it looked amazing.

Pheasant and Funny - I have a new peony (well, bought last year and went in the ground in April/May) and it has no buds!

I don't think I planted it too deeply as it already had shoots - I planted it level with the surface of the bed.

It's a Sarah Bernhardt. The leaves have grown beautifully Grin I looked it up and in some cases flowering starts at the end of June. I'd almost given up on the new shoots coming through so maybe it's a bit delayed. I am in the SE though Hmm

The wisteria is having its second flush of flowers and one of my favourites is full of bees - Echinops sphaerocephalus or white globe thistle. Agapanthus in pots lovely but everything in the garden was looking a bit stressed, thankfully we had some rain yesterday.

Resuscitating this thread because I need inspiration for late August/September flowering things as my garden is at a bit of a lull.

  • Sedum
  • Japanese anemones
  • Crocosmia
  • Thalictrum
  • Persicaria

I'm afraid that our garden is rather devoid of flowers at the moment. Just some petunias in the hanging basket and a row of sunflowers.
But we do have vast quantities of tomatoes and victoria plums.

'A bit of a lull' Shove but you've got all that going on! Ok, how about some Asters - A. frikartii 'Monch' (don't know how to do an umlaut on the 'o') is an earlier one. Alma Potschke is a wonderful deep pink. Not sure what's going on in my garden as we're on holiday in Cornwall - visited the National Collection of Dahlias - want (almost) all of them!

hibiscus, roses, fuschias, ceratostigma, hosta, cyclamen, clematis, hydrangeas, lilies, helenium waldtraut, geraniums, corydalis, gaura, hyssop, oleander

sounds a lot but not very big clumps so a bit patchy. lots of foliage though.

Oh, aircooled, it sounds like a lovely place to visit! Dahlias are a great plan too. I like the spiky-flowered ones very much. Asters are a fabulous idea too - I may see if I can track one down at the weekend and plant it in.

I had to google ceratostigma funny. What a lovely thing! Is it fully hardy? I hear you on the clumps - one of my problems is that I only just bought some of the late flowering things, so they are still very small. I do have masses and masses of self-seeded verbena on the way, though, which is rather lovely.

Perspicacia - I am jealous of your toms. I haven't had a single ripe one yet!

Report
funnyperson · 21/08/2015 19:53

Yes, ceratostigma is hardy and the flowers are a lovely blue colour and foliage very dainty and a nice bright green.

In mums garden the crocosmia and asters are looking very lovely indeed: little dots of purple and a delicate light translucent orange! Then there is a large hardy fuschia bush of deepest magenta. Very nice.

I think whats nice is having just the one or two flower tyes but lots of them and you get this with large old gardens where there hasnt been too much interference so that plants spread and self seed, providing swathes of colour, but some very good succession planting!
