2025 A Level Results Day and Sept Uni Starters - All Welcome

1000 replies

SlightlyJaded · 25/07/2025 22:26

I couldn't see board specifically dedicated to results day for our DC who have sat A levels this spring. And I know some of us STILL have questions about Uni starters.

DS has Liverpool as his first choice and Notts Trent as his insurance - both to study History. Anyone who recognises me from previous boards might remember the hell we went through with DD a couple of years ago, so DS has applied quite a lot of caution to his choices - perhaps too much, perhaps not enough. Neither of us have any idea what to expect with his results. He has genuinely fluctuated between a D and an A in some of his mocks....

I still haven't done anything about accommodation which is one of the reasons I am starting this thread.

But mostly, it's for nail biting, relief, tears, support, advice and all the other things needed to get us through the next few weeks.

Welcome :)

DS2 is pacing around the garden. I'm actually hiding in the office as I feel really tearful watching him. It's going to be a long night....

See you all on the other side tomorrow

hettie · 13/08/2025 22:38

@3bluellamas thanks..... Exeter has unfortunately not..... Sigh..... It's such a daft process they should all slowly move to applying with grades in hand. I don't see how this process benefits anyone...

the exeter clearing grades are showing on their website. You have to click through to each course though. I know this is the case since it's one of DS's possible clearing options.

It seems Warwick and Bath have some places in clearing. But usual grades I think

Which course is this at Bath, please?

Where? They were there a day or so ago but can't see them there now.

I've put the link up. Basically most courses are showing at BCC. A couple like psychology want ACC

Sadly none of the courses we're interested in are in clearing. Those subjects are in clearing at Durham too (at least psychology was earlier today).

Well, as Roman Roy would say, fuckadoodledoo.

Good luck, everyone 🤞

Bonniebonnie · 13/08/2025 23:32

Good luck to all.

I have one question. DCs firm choice (Oxbridge) says ‘if you don’t quite meet the terms of your offer, we will need to see how close you are before we make a decision. be patient’. DCs school is on hand to look at grade boundaries, and make advice on next steps - which in some cases might be a remarked paper.

In this eventuality - and a student is waiting for confirmation from their firm choice - what would ucas actually say?!

SlightlyJaded · 13/08/2025 22:36

oooooh one more question, sorry!

IF DS was offered his Insurance but wanted to shop around a bit to see if there was anything he preferred, how long does he have to do that? How long does the offer 'stand'?

The offer stands but if he did decide to go into clearing to trade up, he'd be rejecting them and he wouldn't be able to go back (unless in clearing again). The offer stands until he rejects them though as he won't need to do anything to accept it, just log on.

This normally doesn't happen - the universities don't know the marks or the grade boundaries and if they did this for everyone who go AAB when they needed AAA it would make the process very difficult because someone with a B could have been 1 mark away from an A and someone else could have just gotten a B by one mark. So they'll either be lenient and accept you with a missed grade or reject you or offer you a foundation year or a course with a lower grade that's similar. If he does miss a grade and he finds out its 1 or 2 marks, wait for teachers advice to 1. Request the script and 2. Look through it and decide whether they think a review/remark is worth it (many times it isn't even if they've only missed one mark) - if you do go for a priority remark/review then alert the firm university normally depending on how competitive the course is they'll try and hold a place till the priority review comes back but they may not always be able to, they may offer a place for 2026.

It will say approximately that his firm place is still waiting on a decision (and also whatever decision has come through from his insurance). Alternatively it may say he has been rejected - if he then decides to go for an review he should let them know asap

Unable to sleep, and not just because it is too hot. Just heard the church clock strike 12, as the windows are all open, so it's officially results day. I couldn't see any advice here as to how to interpret the lie of the land if a course has gone into clearing or not. DC has Durham as firm, was an aspirational application, so just getting an offer was amazing. If the wind is blowing in the right direction, could hit the grades. Course has not gone into clearing, but typically has only a small number of applicants. Hoping this is positive. Confused also with Durham offers as I assume it is the insurance for many holding Oxbridge offers. So curious to ponder on the balance of firm/insurance offer holders they have. DC's course has an equivalent at Oxford but not Cambridge.

NCTDN · 14/08/2025 00:14

I can’t sleep either…

CosyMintFish · 14/08/2025 00:17

STEP results are out, and DC has the grades needed. Unless he’s crashed his A Levels this should be enough. 🤞

KitKatChunkyCat · 14/08/2025 03:27

Good luck to all

doubleshotcappuccino · 14/08/2025 04:11

Cannot sleep! Good luck everyone xxx

Flamethrowers · 14/08/2025 05:30

I so want it to be alright for my children

gobbl · 14/08/2025 05:33

Good luck everyone!

SleepQuest33 · 14/08/2025 05:53

Good luck to all your children!
i don’t think I’ve been this nervous for a long long time!

Polkadottablecloth · 14/08/2025 06:07

Awake now! Off to school for 8am as we need high grades and he is concerned he may have missed. He has a list of clearing options and I am taking a phone charger and crossing my fingers! Good luck all!

Bonniebonnie · 14/08/2025 06:20

@TheLivelyViper - I think it might work a bit differently for O&C because of the whole college offer system etc. I know that they won’t have exact marks initially, just grades - so if the offer was Astar A A, and a student got 3 As, the college will look to see how close the dropped A grade was to the A star. But this only happens once the student has results and has to contact the college and forward them.I just don’t know what happens with UCAS as system more automated.

All very stressful 🤪 though school on hand to help.

I hope everyone slept ok. Best of luck to our lovely young people! X

That’s amazing. Well done @CosyMintFish to your DC. STEP is so hard. Is this for maths? Cambridge?

pistachioicecream · 14/08/2025 06:36

Good luck everyone. I went through this with DS a few years ago but don’t remember being this nervous at all back then. His firm offer was much more reasonable than DD’s though so I expect that’s why. Hoping for the best for all our brilliant young people. At least the waiting will be over soon.
