Year 13 2024 - General support thread part 2

All welcome as our young people head in to their last full term before the summer exams. Between UCAS applications, receiving offers/rejections, learning to drive and taking driving tests, revising for mocks and sitting them the pace hasn’t let up for our DC.

This thread has been a lovely supportive and immensely helpful place to talk as we guide our DC’s through this challenging time!

It’s now the time for our young adults to sit their final year at sixth form/college. Everyone is welcome!

@Mumski45 snap...guess he is studying all STEM. Plus he has black tie leavers on the Friday so hectic week.

QueenMabby · 16/06/2024 16:28

Four this last week too. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

What else is on Friday in addition to Chem 3 @Mumski45 ?

Mumski45 · 16/06/2024 16:36

@QueenMabby it's Chem 3 and Fr maths on Friday.

Mumski45 · 16/06/2024 17:39

@Pleasealexa yes he has Physics, 2x Chem, Maths and Fr maths this week

QueenMabby · 16/06/2024 18:00

@Mumski45 - ooof that's a heavy load!

We had a Father's Day lunch out with PIL and DH's siblings and their families. DS literally just came for the food and then left to come back for more revision. I shall be so glad when this is over.

Wronginformation · 16/06/2024 18:23

DD has 6 this coming week😁.
But yeah also some sporty event to follow so trying to keep fit as well...

@Mumski45 Ds is having regrets about taking Chem as perhaps wasn’t needed and the workload is heavy. Good luck to your ds

Mumski45 · 16/06/2024 19:38

@Pleasealexa thank you and good luck to your DS for all the papers this week. DS is hoping for a better Physics paper after the last one. The Fr Maths should be OK as decisions was his best topic. Just feels tough that he still has almost half of his workload in one week when a lot have already finished. DS2 finishes on Wed so will be good to get this week over with.

ShanghaiDiva · 16/06/2024 21:35

@Mumski45 - five for dd too. Counting down the days now.

MirandaWest · 16/06/2024 22:30

DD has her last one tomorrow morning. Then a haircut tomorrow afternoon and then more Taylor Swift preparation before her friend comes over and they go to sleep early ish before very early start on Tuesday morning to get the train to Cardiff. I am taking them to the station and appear to have said that if the first train goes wrong that I will drive them over to Manchester. Am hoping it doesn’t!

Investinmyself · 16/06/2024 22:42

@Mumski45 I remember you from the 11 plus thread many years ago good luck to your ds. My daughter has 2 to go.

Mumski45 · 16/06/2024 22:48

@Investinmyself that feels like a long time ago now. DS1 still struggles with time management in exams like he did then. Good luck to your DD in her remaining exams and next steps.

Thank you. It really does feel like end of era as she’s been in same school since yr7.
She’s moaning as all other humanities have finished and she has 2 papers to go.

LouisCatorze · 17/06/2024 07:46

DD is suffering a bit of a post exams/leaving school low. In limbo, waiting for friends to finish theirs, to go on holiday and to see Taylor Swift at the weekend. Plus she's got no money, having not worked her part-time job for two months over the revision/exam period. She's back on the treadmill now but not picking up as many shifts as she wants.

Is this the final push week for all of those who have not yet sat all their A Level papers, or does it continue into next week too? Good luck to all those who still have exams to sit.

MirandaWest · 17/06/2024 08:46

DD is at school for the last exam. She was in a bit of an odd mood which I don't think was due to the exam but who can tell. The rather grey and murky weather probably doesn't help.

Rollergirl11 · 17/06/2024 10:58

DD was in college early this morning for last lot of revision ahead of her last exam this afternoon. A lot of her friends still have Biology, Chemistry and Maths exams this week so think she’s one of the earliest to finish.

Good luck everyone for the last week!

About half of DDs friends are finished and the rest finish by the end of this week.

She’s had a swanky new haircut and has opticians tomorrow for first contact lenses - exciting. Clothes shopping online for holidays and generally chilling, went to a friends yesterday to watch the rather uninspiring footy, drinking Pimms pretending that summer is here!

Lots of social stuff planned from this weekend and then end of next week we go away. Cannot wait.

MrsAvocet · 17/06/2024 12:21

Well that's Physics done. DS said the engineering part was fun and the rest straightforward. Fun...strange boy. That is what he is planning to do with the rest of his life so I guess it's good he enjoys it! He also announced that he has started clearing his room. Further enquiry revealed he meant that he returned 2 physics textbooks to school today. A step in the right direction I suppose...

GreatWorldAtlas · 17/06/2024 12:25

DD is all done now! Announced at 12pm that she is now bored as all the things she would normally do while procrastinating are no fun when she's not, and not to mention that she has now finished with school...

Good luck to all those with lots more exams still! We've also heard today that DD1 got a great result in her degree (2.1) and DD2 is currently at a job interview for the summer.

QueenMabby · 17/06/2024 12:51

@MrsAvocet - my ds also pleasantly surprised by physics 3 this morning. He finds the engineering module boring (he'd much rather do astrophysics) but he's good at it so that part was fine. He normally loathes 3A with a passion but even that seemed pretty good.

1 subject down, 2 to go. Chem 2 tomorrow.

Lightsabre · 17/06/2024 14:55

Ds said Physics was a 'disaster'. Not sure what to make of this as we've only had a quick chat. Hopefully not as bad as he's making out. Apparently they all found it hard, even the Oxbridge physics and engineering holders.

GreatWorldAtlas · 17/06/2024 18:19

I think paper 3 is modular - DD was doing the medical physics one - and thought it was ok. Didn't do well on the eye question because she doesn't wear glasses (ha), ear question fine. Overall fine but didn't test a wide range of the course. Just glad they are over!

legosnowqueen · 17/06/2024 19:44

Good luck for the exams this week all! DS finished his year 12 mocks last week & jetted off to Bulgaria on his long awaited Lads Holiday on Saturday. This already feels like the longest week of my life...

We are on day 3 & so far 3 boys in the group have had money/wallets/a phone nicked. Top tip for those DCs booking party packages in resorts, it turns out that most of the parties don't include drinks & that drink prices are higher than Uk prices...the boat party looked fabulous though & the weather is glorious unlike here!

Rollergirl11 · 17/06/2024 19:49

DD now all done and dusted! She has gone out for the night to celebrate. She seems quite nostalgic that 7 years at their school has come to an end and that she won’t be going back.

DS has his last GCSE tomorrow too. It is going to feel very strange having them both home for the next 11 weeks.

DS is still unsure whether he wants to go on to the school sixth form or to another local sixth form college. If he doesn’t continue then that is the end of our families journey. Quite hard to get my head around that!!
