It’s now the time for our young adults to sit their final year at sixth form/college. Everyone is welcome!

I have realised that I haven't posted on the new thread! DS goes back tomorrow and his first day back is a day trip to a University he knows he isn't applying to. He has done some reading for coursework and a bit of MAT prep over summer, but I think he will be ramping up the MAT prep now as it's only a few weeks away.

mushroom3 · 05/09/2023 12:47

He is my youngest and so this is the last back to school for me.

MrsAvocet · 05/09/2023 13:32

DS has gone to his first preference University open day today. I had an operation last week and had massively underestimated how rotten I'd still be feeling unfortunately. We'd hired a wheelchair with a view to going on the train and DS pushing me around but there's no way that's feasible so he has gone alone. I'm sure he'll be fine but I do feel I'm missing out. 😕Hopefully there'll be an offer holders day ( and he'll get an offer!) I told him to collect every piece of paper that looks vaguely relevant so that's my reading for the next few days .

MirandaWest · 05/09/2023 13:52

DD is my younger one so is my last time at the going back to school thing. Actual birthday not until the 20th but then I suppose I'll have two adults...

MirandaWest · 05/09/2023 13:53

(and also DH but he is even more of an adult than I am seeing as he is 3.5 years older)

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 05/09/2023 20:11

Do people normally go with their kids to open days? I always assumed they go alone? I'm not sure if DS is planning to go to anyway, he may take a gap year. He's currently deciding if he wants to do his EPQ or not (I think not).

StColumbofNavron · 05/09/2023 20:17

I’ve gone with DS1 but if he wanted to go alone I would step back. There were loads of parents at the ones we’ve visited, but also a good number with friends or by themselves.

mushroom3 · 05/09/2023 22:56

Parents frequently accompany their DC to open days, but sometimes groups of friends or a school group visit a university. For popular courses there may be space for potential applicants only at open day talks. Offer holders days are another option if you can’t go along to open days with your DC.

MyOtherProfile · 06/09/2023 05:11

The two we have done so far were full of parents and children.

stoneysongs · 06/09/2023 07:04

I have been to open days with DD but we do like a day out together. She goes to the talks by herself if they are busy. Most people do seem to have a parent with them, sometimes two, and whole families are not that unusual.

Silkierabbit · 06/09/2023 07:18

My DD went with friends and she preferred that (and moaned about the number of parents there) but it really depends on the child, she is exceptionally mature for her age whereas her brother there's no way he could manage by himself.

QueenMabby · 06/09/2023 08:55

DS wanted DH to go with him. I'm allowed to go to the offer holder days in due course apparently.

legosunqueen · 06/09/2023 09:00

I've gone with DS to open days. He's been happy with that but did say it would be fun to go with friends if any of his friends were interested in the same unis but sadly none are - I'd be fine if he decided to go with a friend.

Just waved DS off to school - good luck to all DCs for this important year!

spacechimp79 · 06/09/2023 09:16

My DS has done a mix of open days with a parent or a friend. Don’t think he minds either way! Off to York this Saturday.
Can’t believe it is the final year at school. Where has the time gone!

elliejjtiny · 06/09/2023 09:35

My ds isn't doing any open days but when I was doing this in 2001 most people had their parents there.

Rollergirl11 · 06/09/2023 09:39

I’ve done all the open days with DD. We took one of DD’s friend with us for one and 2 others she’s bumped in to friends whilst there. But DD takes it all very seriously and she says she wouldn’t pay as much attention if she went with a bunch of mates. We have Lancaster on 16th Sep and Warwick next month and then that’s DD done.

We have four more to go and I will be glad when we're done because it's getting quite expensive now. DS didn't go to any, only offer holder days, but DD keeps changing her mind about courses so she wants to revisit some.

EversoDetermined · 06/09/2023 13:42

Checking back in as DD has gone back to college this week. She still doesn't know what she wants to study or where she wants to go, and has decided on a gap year, which is something of a relief as I think she was finding it all a bit overwhelming and distracting.

ShanghaiDiva · 06/09/2023 15:58

Last ‘first day’ photograph today and loads of homework already apparently!

QueenMabby · 06/09/2023 17:59

Proud mum alert here - DS passed his driving theory test today - first time! He smashed it and got scores plenty over what was needed.

Silkierabbit · 06/09/2023 18:08

Well done to your DS QueenMabby

legosunqueen · 07/09/2023 08:38

Fantastic @QueenMabby - well done!

MirandaWest · 07/09/2023 09:57

Well done to your DS @QueenMabby :)

DD was off to school this morning - she let me take a photo of her although made me do it again a couple of times!

Lightsabre · 07/09/2023 18:42

Congratulations to your ds @QueenMabby

NeverForgetYourDreams · 08/09/2023 06:00
