Don't know anyone else with kids doing resits...

I think more than 30% don't pass every year so there must be loads.
My son didn't pass and retook at college( couldn't quite scrape a 4 but went straight into work).

Thanks for responding. I know there should be loads, but generally not on MN!

DD is 'resitting' maths. I put that in quotes as she hasn't sat it properly before. Her y11 was TAGs and she wasn't well anyway, she wasn't entered last year, so this is her first even vaguely proper attempt.

Just me then!

My DD had Unit 1 resit maths GCSE today. I also feel like my dd is the only one! How is yours doing?

TeenDivided · 24/05/2023 06:41

@duvet You must be in Wales then?

DD had her first paper last Friday. She spent Tue-Thur saying she wasn't going to do it (think of my stress levels!) but finally decided 4.30pm Thursday night. She only stayed in the exam 1hr when it is 90mins but at least she went in.

How many more papers does yours have? DD has 2 more on 7th & 14th June.

I so don't want another year of maths with her!

Wales yes, and ditto another of Maths. It's as stressful for us mums as it is for them!! I feel for you!
It has been a very uphill struggle to get DD to revise maths enough the last 3 weeks. I had to get out the big guns at the weekend! After an inital big strop, fair does - she revised nearly all day Sun and Mon! Didnt help that she had a lot on with her BTEC last week. Just one more Math for us on the 14th but also resitting English. She has ASD so not great at reading between the lines as needed in English papers!

KatnissNeverdone · 24/05/2023 07:54

DS is year 13 and resitting for the second time. He's at a special school and I know he won't pass maths again. He just doesn't get it. They've tried a new tactic of him answering the one point questions first to see if he can pick up marks there rather than getting stuck on the more complicated ones, but he still struggles with the easier ones.

He's also fuming that the last maths exam is on his 18th birthday.

TeenDivided · 24/05/2023 08:03

Welcome all. Glad I'm not the only one.

DD is doing a level 1 BTEC which currently seems to be fitting nicely with exams but I'm not sure how it will work after half term. She has an EHCP and we got an agreement not to do Eng Lang this year as no way would she manage to prep and sit both especially with the timetable. (Last year she did Eng not maths).

DD has engaged well and can do enough maths if I am sat with her saying 'what do you think next' but is rock bottom on confidence and struggles without me with her.

I think the Government rules re resitting GCSE if you get a 3 are misguided. The 3 band is so wide that if you just scrape a 3 up from a 2 you are still a long way off a 4...

Looking forward to a 'fun' half term persuading DD to do a bit of maths daily. At least it is calculator papers left so her poor times tables will have less impact.

I know 4 different people (3 girls, one boy) retaking. You are most definitely not alone.

Barleymilk · 01/06/2023 21:44

I posted above about my eldest son.
Now youngest son in year 10 has scraped a 3 in his mocks and teacher says it isn't impossible for him to get a 4 next year.Argghhh. So much pressure.
Daughter failed mocks but got a 4 in the exam so it can be done I know, its just a shame there is so much emphasis on passing.

mondaytosunday · 02/06/2023 08:00

My friend's daughter has taken it three times and has yet to pass. I imagine the last time was the functional maths one. She is in vocational college and they've let her continue, moving on to second half of level three next year (so I think she's doing a two year course over three years, but I don't know the details).
She is studying social care and has a placement in a hospital this summer, and is hard working, but just can't get through the maths exam. What if she never can? It's not needed for her work.
A friend went back to work at 50 after her divorce. She is a artist and jewellery maker, and decided to become an assistant art teacher. She never passed GCSE maths (or O levels then). She had to do it to get her qualification and she said it was the hardest thing - and totally irrelevant to her job.

TeenDivided · 02/06/2023 08:10

@mondaytosunday She might well have started on the L2 for a year before progressing to L3.

DD is staying at college next year. I so don't want to have to do another year of maths with her. She can do it. She was solving trig problems yesterday with confidence...

head in hands.

Doing maths revision. Something was 3 and a half hours.
So that was 3hrs 50 mins according to DD, we discussed why not.
Then a short time later she had to convert 190mins to hours, divided by 60, so that's 3.167 hrs (or whatever) = 3hrs 17 minutes.

She has blind spots. Time is one of them.

Ugh it is tough @TeenDivided! My friend's daughter is dyslexic, as are her two brothers,
Kinda ironic as both parents make their living writing!
I don't know what the issue is, she didn't get any other GCSEs other than English. Talking to her and she's a lively, engaged girl. Just not academic.

jimmymcg · 03/06/2023 00:12

My DD is doing Maths resit - Edexcel same exam dates as your DD, she was predicted a 3 but only got a 2 last year, so she has a big gap to make up. I am not confident. She may get a 3 and then resit again in November?

caringcarer · 03/06/2023 00:16

My Foster son is resitting Foundation Maths. He's had a tutor this year so I'm just hoping he passes it this time. He's been doing a BTEC Sport Level 2 course this year and has loved it. He needs the Level 4 in Maths as he wants to move on to the BTEC Sports Level 3 course which is worth 3 A levels and I think he will really struggle if he has to sit Maths for a further year. He has learning disabilities but works so hard and is brilliant at Sport.

caringcarer · 03/06/2023 00:18

Foster Son scraped a level 3 last summer and had improved and moved up to be halfway between a level 3 and 4 in his November retake. Just hoping for a level 4 in the summer.

Why the government thinks that young people who don’t achieve a 4 after 11 years at school will magically achieve it after one lesson a week of more-of-the-same for 2 and a half terms, beats me.

I agree. Especially as the band 3 is so wide. If someone just scrapes into a 3 from a 2 it is unlikely they'll get up to a 4.

DD has an EHCP (only since Feb y12) and we used it to enable her not to resit English this time around (and not to do maths last year). No way would she cope with a massive English exam on a Monday followed by maths on Wednesday.

Hope everyone had some passes?
So happy to say DD2 passed her resits, getting out the big guns and nagging, putting up with all the huffing and moaning was worth it!! I feel proud of myself as well as her!!! LOL!

Well done to your DD2!

Sadly no pass here so feeling pretty despondent. This might be the end of the line on resits. Every time she gets a 3 she feels a failure again, and her self belief is very shaky anyway. It feels too much like flogging a dead horse.

@TeenDivided Aw I'm sorry that's rough. I Hope your DD is finding her way, despite that.

TeenDivided · 24/08/2023 14:01

We'll get there (finding a way through).
But not today.

My DD also missed the Grade 4 - she got a 3 and a score of 122, so an improvement from last year a 2 score 82, so a 50% but she still needs to find another 25 on the new grade boundaries. She is studying a Level 3 BTEC in Business so the Grade 4 will be beneficial if she can get it. I do feel sorry for the poster with DS into sport, that seems really unfair to insist on Maths pass. Btw my DD is getting Merits on her course and did pass 7 other GCSEs but Maths with its simultaneous equations and transposition isn't it her make up. It doesn't make her a failure --- aargh this focus on Maths Grade 4 is infuriating. Good luck to those that need to try again.

jimmymcg · 12/09/2023 18:38

Sorry not that anyone here says she is a failure- it just this need for the Maths pass that seems to overshadow other skills.
