It is frustrating isn't it @jimmymcg

We are going to try Functional Skills for English this year if we can find a teacher.

Some colleges offer functional maths and English alongside whatever other (more practical) course they are doing. Maybe that would work for her? I don't know why kids who just aren't going to be able to pass GCSE's for whatever reason aren't given the option to do functional maths and English at school - but it just doesn't seem to happen. I work with so many kids that know they won't pass anything, some who don't even open the exam paper. Who wants to keep failing? I wish they had the opportunity to do something that they hopefully felt confident they could pass.

@itsmyp4rty Unfortunately we don't want her doing a full time course because (a) there isn't another one suitable except the one 'above' her current course but she can't cope with that right now anyway and (b) she can't cope with a full time course and English and maths - she proved that over the last 2 years.

Thanks @itsmyp4rty I just looked up Functional Maths, I had vaguely heard of it, but because everything is about GCSE passes. I had kind of dismissed it. I didn't know it had equivalency with a Grade 4 pass. That is really good. I guess my DD will go again in Nov, now she has got grade 3 her College should put her In again in Nov, they didn't last year and no of course they have the higher grade boundaries to contend with. I have asked for the scripts to see if we can nail down where she can pick up some extra points and try for some quick wins. Anyway I wanted to share my DD experience in solidarity with the other struggling to get the grade. I think my DD would push back on the functional maths thing because of the change of syllabus and she would think to learn that would be more work than trying to gap fill on the GCSE. Onwards and upwards!

Fs maths is more a reduction in syllabus rather than a change. It does what it says on the tin: it leaves the everyday useful stuff but removes things like algebra and parallel line rules.
However many colles don't offer level 2 fs, if you have the 3 in GCSE you have to retake the GCSE.

Edited for spelling.

Technically you don't have to retake anything to meet the condition of funding, you just have to be studying towards the qualification. There's no requirement to sit the exam.
