GCSE year 2023 thread for parents

NCTDN · 01/10/2022 13:53

I'm setting up a thread for anyone who may be interested with children currently in y11. My dd has just left for uni and a thread for her year has been invaluable even though I only found it very late on.
DS will be 16 in December and looking to do a levels in the sciences. We've just started looking at sixth forms.

Hello! I know @NCTDN from the other thread and happy to join in here. DS is a bit of an all-rounder, but is thinking of engineering and therefore science A levels. He'll be sticking at his current school for sixth form.

UserError012345 · 01/10/2022 14:21

I have a DD in Y11. I'd like to join.

Hello @UserError012345! If this turns out to be like the thread for the just-gone-to-uni cohort, it will be full of helpful supportive advice! Fingers crossed.

OnthePiste · 01/10/2022 14:33

Hi I would like to join, DS in year 11 planning to leave his school and go to local Sixth form college. He wants to do Maths, computer science and one other A level/BTEC

treesandweeds · 01/10/2022 14:46

Ooh excellent, first child teaching this age so clueless about what needs to be done.
Someone told me 6th form application is like when you apply for school, a central county application form, is that right?

PhotoDad · 01/10/2022 14:54

Hi @OnthePiste, looks like we have a STEMmy bunch so far!

@treesandweeds, I am going to guess that it depends on the county! Different parts of the UK have very different models for post-16 education.

handmademitlove · 01/10/2022 16:51

I also have a Yr11, looking at maths / science / tech next year at the moment.

TeenDivided · 01/10/2022 19:10

You guys may like to check out the thread in Secondary: www.mumsnet.com/talk/further_education/4645645-gcse-year-2023-thread-for-parents unless you explicitly want a separate one for discussing next steps.

PhotoDad · 01/10/2022 19:47

@TeenDivided Didn't see there was already a thread! (I think you've linked to this one, though?)

NCTDN · 01/10/2022 19:49

Oh I never saw the other thread, but that link seems to just go back to this one? I sort of forgot that they're still secondary rather than further Ed at this point. I suppose I've been thinking about sixth form applications.

Ok is it this one? There's also another one on the go now I've looked in the right place! This one has the most posts though. Year 11 22/23 support thread. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/4615911-year-11-2223-support-thread

This is the one I'm posting on and was just about to invite you over.

PhotoDad · 01/10/2022 20:18

Thanks, @ShowOfHands! Shall we all move over there to avoid duplication?

NCTDN · 01/10/2022 20:29

I'm on that one now.

TeenDivided · 02/10/2022 08:07

Yes that was the one I meant to link to. I'm incompetent after 7pm. Sorry for the confusion.

@treesandweeds not here it isn’t. You apply direct to our sixth form. Nothing goes through the Council.

So probably best to check with yours to see. I found following our sixth form Facebook page helped lots and told us how to apply.

DD in year 11;she wants to do IT and Drama at college plus one other;she's leaning towards history but also interested in criminology.

She's already done her IT GCSE at the end of year 10 and has a grade 9 in it.
