@Lightsabre research piece up to 2000 words and he hasn't done it! I was cross with him as he's had practically 3 months

DD has similar - although there were other multiple choice questions as well. She did the multiple choice questions ages ago, but left the research - and now says she has no idea how to do it, and neither does any of her friends who are also doing Biology, and none of them have done it, and none of them are doing it until they speak to the teacher to understand what is expected. I said let me look at it, research is research - but she won't let me, and just reiterates that nobody else has done it (which I just don't believe) and she isn't. I hope we are not going to get off to a bad start.

School actually started yesterday, but yesterday was just an induction day for Year 12s (and Year 7s), so no actual subject teacher contact, just timetables given out and various guidelines and assemblies and welfare briefings and photographs for lanyards and I don't know what for half a day. There are some new pupils joining the school, so I guess it was a chance to show them around - and also to see the sixth form common room etc (which actually has been done up over the summer and looks really nice, according to DD).

Proper school on Monday.

Chances are no one will ever read their ‘bridging work’ anyway so I wouldn’t worry !

LouisCatorze · 04/09/2022 09:05

The implication is that DD is definitely going to be tested on some of her bridging work (geography). Not sure about the other two subjects but would expect with English that it will become very evident if they've not read the play if their first lesson is discussing it!

singingstones · 04/09/2022 09:15

Yes DD has some which is obviously to get her back in the swing of maths or whatever, but some she has to hand in on the first day. Not that that means anyone will read it! But she won't get away with not doing it.

MrsAvocet · 04/09/2022 09:25

My older children had their bridging work marked and returned within the first couple of weeks of starting 6th form so I'm assuming DS's will be too.

I'm sure I have read here about maths tests for Maths A levels early on.

DD is returning to college, but still on a level 1 course (so in many ways I fit better on this thread than a y13 one). At least this time she knows she'll have maths & English assessments in the first couple of days (resitting) so it won't come as a surprise.

singingstones · 04/09/2022 09:37

Yes she has a maths test 3-4 weeks in on the bridging material and whatever they've learnt so far from the A level course. So she's going to do the bridging stuff nearer the test. There's more than enough to do for her other subjects.

QueenMabby · 04/09/2022 09:44

DS also has a maths test - week 2. He finished his bridging work last week. I raised an eyebrow but was silent at a child he knows who is joining from outside who waiting until he knew he'd got in and intended to do the work in one day. It was 20 pages and some pages had nearly 100 questions on them!

Ds hasn't done the physics work which apparently was "optional". I pointed out that as it is his favourite subject and the one he wanted to do at degree then presumably he wanted to and was interested enough to do it....apparently not.

I'll let him get the first week out of the way before I have the "expectations" talk with him!

LouisCatorze · 04/09/2022 10:37

a child he knows who is joining from outside who waiting until he knew he'd got in and intended to do the work in one day. It was 20 pages and some pages had nearly 100 questions on them! That sounds rather like DD who has woefully underestimated how long it would take her to do.

I imagine that the bridging work enables them to get a sense of what type of level the young people are coming in at. Particularly useful for those who are new to the school and unknown quantities to the teachers.

StColumbofNavron · 04/09/2022 11:03

DS1 ploughed through the politics, Classics and Spanish quite easily but he has been a little stressed by the history and asked for help, because it’s a topic he has never studied (but also the reason he stayed at his school as the only place offering it). It’s a source question about value etc and I’ve tried explaining he doesn’t need to know everything about the topic because the question is about whether the source is valuable, but he keeps asking me for facts - but he only read the book and not the ancillary works listed. Luckily, I had a couple of books we could dip into to make him feel confident he had the ‘facts’. History was his top grade and he is well known as a history buff and he wants to study it so I think he is concerned about not making the right first impression. It’s the first time I’ve ever really seen him doubt himself.

zighead · 04/09/2022 11:15

My DS finally finished his computer science and maths work but hasn’t even started physics or biology. Apparently only some subjects are compulsory and the minimum they need to do is one of the subjects. Doesn’t make much sense to me if I’m honest!

LouisCatorze · 05/09/2022 06:28

DD had a bit of a meltdown doing the Hamlet stuff yesterday evening. In the end, she got the reflective piece written but really it was not the ideal conclusion to the long summer holiday, or indeed beginning of her sixth form career at a new school.Think she's going to find getting back into the study zone a challenge.

Good luck to everyone starting today!

legosunqueen · 05/09/2022 07:40

DS finished the bridging work yesterday - phew! A day of freedom today before induction day tomorrow.

I now need to broach the subject of time off in term time with the school - we rebooked our trip to New Zealand to visit my Dad (planned for his 80th birthday in April 2020) for December, but it will mean DS missing the last week of term. I hope that they will be sympathetic to the request, DDad now has emphysema & is increasingly frail. I am pretty sure based on previous years that there are no exams that week - crossing everything 🤞

Good luck to all our DCs this week...

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 05/09/2022 08:12

So this has to be the week the summer work gets done. Apparently. He's been ploughing through the maths for a week or so but hasn't started on the others which are new subjects for him and I fear will need more thought.

Still you can't tell them. He got in at 2am this morning after hanging out with mates - several start at different colleges and are back this week....

zighead · 05/09/2022 09:36

My DS started back today and was rather bleary eyed after going to a gig last night.
Good luck to all our DC in year 12!
2am @TwinkleToesStrikesAgain I wouldn’t be able to cope with that! I’m dreading when he is 18 and going to clubs. Thankfully 11.30 is the latest I’ve had to endure so far.

TheOnlyMrsW · 05/09/2022 09:38

Morning all, DD has gone back today, school sixth form so not too different but should be a bit less stressful for her in terms of the noise and busyness as smaller classes. No uniform here for the first time in forever so does feel weird!!!
We've talked about university but decided to have a few visits to places first and then narrow down open day choices from there - DD is looking at environmental science which most places seem to have a variation of so eventual choices will be based more around course structure than anything else.
Hope everyone's first few days are going well 😊

MrsPnut · 02/09/2022 17:04

@Rollergirl11 I feel your pain. We are trying to find the exact shade of dark taupe jacket to go with a pair of trousers I bought in the sale at the beginning of the summer because they are comfortable and she wants to wear them for school. I am losing the will to live as well as having so many parcels to send back.

Buy a similar colour in the same fabric and dye them both the same / similar shade.

GhostTypeEevee · 05/09/2022 10:34

I really don't understand the whole business suit need for sixth form.

MirandaWest · 05/09/2022 11:47

DD has her last day of freedom today - she's gone into town to pick up new glasses (and do various other things).

One of her friends is doing her driving theory test today - it was her birthday on 2nd September. DD's birthday is on 20th September so not too far behind. Not sure she'll do her theory test quite so soon after her birthday although we have driving lessons lined up. Just need to see what her timetable is like and then we can work out with the driving instructor which day to have them.

MrsAvocet · 05/09/2022 13:20

My DS is 17 next week so we're all good to go with driving. DH will teach him and then we will get a few lessons with an instructor to learn test routes etc. I couldn't do it, but DH is a good teacher and has already successfully taught our DD.
Being one of the first in the cohort to drive has it's stresses but as we live rurally I must confess I'm rather looking forward to the added independence that DS being able to drive will bring - for ME that is...no more death o'clock starts for sports at the weekend!

MirandaWest · 05/09/2022 14:28

DS is a couple of years older so turned 17 during the time when there couldn’t be any driving lessons so DH taught him a bit but was better once he had actual lessons. Then took ages to be able to get a driving test. When he did pass was great - less having to taxi him round the place 😂

QueenMabby · 05/09/2022 20:43

My ds is a spring baby so a while to go for us.

His first day went well - good teachers and a couple of friends in most of his classes. Only 10 in his chemistry set!

aramox1 · 05/09/2022 21:44

Printing out the bridging work. Finally.

FairyHannie · 05/09/2022 22:00

Gosh I'm glad I found this thread. DC is on second day of sixth form and hates it Sad
I don't know what to do. I had my doubts tbh but left them to it as they were adamant that's what they wanted.
An option they picked isn't a thing anymore, as well as a long list of others things that are really bothering them. We've done bullet point notes tonight and they know they have to discuss it with the form tutor tomorrow.
Obviously I'm encouraging them to give it more time but I have no idea what they will do if they still hate it!
Bloody teenagers!

aramox1 · 05/09/2022 22:25

Oh that sounds hard! But also sounds like you both have a plan. Does he hate the whole thing? Why?
