This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2022, regardless of their educational setting.
Our DC’s may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed)
Everyone is welcome!

@legofrostqueen that is maddening about your break. Any chance you could get a relative to stay with him? Ds hasn't been away since precovid and we so miss it. I think we could leave him for a night now but only because his life appears very quiet, which in turn makes me sad.
Does anyone else have a teen who just moves between school and bedroom? Social life just hasn't happened. I'm trying to get him to work or volunteer but since he spends nothing there's not much pressure and if I push the heels will dig right in.

Yup. Our teen goes to college and work and then home. He’s been to cinema once. He never goes out. He is the opposite of me at that age. I find it odd and I keep pushing but he just tells me to back off so I’ve kind of given up now ! He has a lot of ‘friends’ online. Maybe this is the new world order and we have to just accept it ??!

legofrostqueen · 12/03/2023 13:21

@aramox1 sadly we have no close/local family support, my DDad is in New Zealand & there are no other living grandparents. It's just the way it is...

chocolatenutcase · 19/03/2023 08:20

Hello. I don't post much but I'm following. Have any of you got a child who just doesn't seem to understand about revising? My DS has mocks straight after Easter. His grades have generally fallen since the start of 6th form and although he does the homework I don't think he's revising. How are your young people revising for chemistry? He gets lots of practice questions as homework but I don't think he's learning the content. Trying not to nag and worry but planning and organising is not his strong point. Thank you x

singingstones · 19/03/2023 08:45

I wish I could help you chocolate, similar position here. The scribble method is brilliant I think but the DC have never bothered with it - too much like hard work. DD would rather make endless flash cards which take ages and leave her with no time to practise questions or commit anything to memory.

Has anyone's DC got AS exams coming up? 8 weeks to go, she's studying four subjects and hasn't started revising. I am leaving her to it but secretly feeling a bit twitchy.

chocolatenutcase · 19/03/2023 08:51

@singingstones I feel a little relieved I'm not the only one with a DC like this. He has grand plans, is also making flash cards but I can't see the learning. I helped him a lot for GCSEs because the teaching was shocking. He's now at a very high achieving college and I was hoping he could now just get on with it.
Good luck with the AS levels. It's hard to sit back and leave then to it.

NameInUseAlreadyAgain · 19/03/2023 09:05

This is exactly why our son chose a BTEC! He just can’t do revising …..

LouisCatorze · 19/03/2023 09:24

@chocolatenutcase I feel your pain because DD is like that. Revision cards are like a distraction and don't seem to help her revise at all. She has 'winged it' so far but her test results have been all over the place to date. She too has mocks after Easter. She says she's revising now but I'm not sure how much is sinking it.

singingstones · 19/03/2023 10:04

On the plus side we have planned a few open days so I am looking forward to those, although I suspect there will be a fraught few weeks between now and then.

chocolatenutcase · 19/03/2023 10:17

@NameInUseAlreadyAgain he's also doing 2 musics so fortunately there's a lot of course work as well.

Lightsabre · 19/03/2023 10:52

@chocolatenutcase - ds gets the checklist (sciences) then makes flash cards for each point using content from his coursework. The hope is that the content is reinforced whilst writing the cards (not sure this always works). I then test him from the checklist ie; explain this or that. If he has time it's useful to do the application and fact recall questions for the particular topics they've covered in the CGP revision books. It's hard work (for both of us and it's all double Dutch to me at this level which makes it boring too!).

singingstones · 19/03/2023 11:08

I did a lot of that last year for DD's GCSEs but hoping not to be quite so involved this time - I agree it's very boring! Really have no interest in the structure of a phospholipid.

chocolatenutcase · 19/03/2023 14:40

@singingstones I spent so much time testing DS at gcse on the aqa flash cards. I also thought I'd be able to lay off now but college is encouraging parents to be involved and "test your kids" not much use when there's no revision done!

singingstones · 19/03/2023 14:48

Oh it used to really wind me up when DD would ask me to test her on a topic she hadn't learnt. Maybe she thought it was a useful way to find out what she didn't know but we both just used to get madder and madder, completely pointless!

legofrostqueen · 19/03/2023 14:51

DS has just one AS but of course internal end of year exams too. He never bothered with flash cards at GCSE so I fear isn't going to start now...

He revealed yesterday that the school have added an extra weekly class for the Maths AS level kids, which is good. He is so busy with two restaurant shifts plus two sports classes each week, although he's very on top of homework I suspect he's not doing much beyond that. I've reminded him he will need to prioritise studying after the Easter break - hoping that over Easter he will revise in the late mornings to early afternoon before meeting friends/working etc...

Happy Mother's Day to everyone Flowers

Notagardener · 19/03/2023 15:55

No revision here either and going abroad in the first week...

MirandaWest · 19/03/2023 16:46

DD seems to be generally revising as she goes along - sometimes I get asked to test her on things which I usually do in a good tempered way!

DS who did A levels last summer was useless at revising in year 12. Did OK in those exams and year 13 mocks but then worked very hard up to actual exams and ended up with very good results (although a little bit of a fluke in maths!)

IThinkIMadeItWorse · 19/03/2023 16:47

DS has assessments before Easter here so has been set some revision as homework this week but not sure how much he has done, feels like only five minutes since his last set in January! I am considerably more hands off now he is doing only his strong subjects, he needed quite a bit of support last year for subjects like English and Geography. He can mainly be left to get on with it now (with perhaps some gentle reminding to start). He was off last week Wed because of the teacher strikes but in on Thursday so didn't miss too much (only has one lesson on a Wednesday.)

I think the big end of year assessments are straight after the summer half term so he will have to do revision that week as they use those to do predicted grades. It's a shame as I was wondering if it might be possible for us to go away that week given that last year was out and so is next year and the year after (2025) my DD will be doing her GCSEs but I guess it's not going to be a good time.

MirandaWest · 19/03/2023 16:49

DD did her grade 8 singing exam today - seemed to go all right 😊 Not sure how long until we get the results. We then went to an ice cream shop and she bought both of us ice creams as it was Mother’s Day 😊

singingstones · 19/03/2023 17:14

DD's exams are the two weeks before May half term unfortunately and even more unfortunately count towards her A levels (40% of the final grade). Then they seem to call half term "study review week" and break up for the summer on 23 June, seems very early 🤷‍♀️

I pointed out how lucky she is to have lots of time to work on her personal statement over the holidays, which went down really well 😂

singingstones · 19/03/2023 17:16

Congrats on the G8 Miranda, DD has G7 piano coming up this summer but only ever seems to play Abba from what I can hear.

Rollergirl11 · 19/03/2023 19:09

We have DD’s parents evening tomorrow on Thursday. She has mocks the week they come back after Easter. She has started revising and will no doubt do some in the holidays. It’s her birthday on the 3nd April and she’s delayed her party until after the mocks so seems to be taking them fairly seriously. I’m not sure if they might make them do another set after the GCSE/A levels have finished.

She is away in Poland this weekend on her History trip. Due back late tomorrow night.

I cannot believe how quickly this year is going and that we are almost 2/3 of the way through!!

We don't seem to have mocks this year. Usual end of year exams in may along with the rest of the school (apart from yrs 11 and 13 of course).

DS's EPQ has to be in on Thursday so he's doing some last minute primping and we'll assemble it all tomorrow night. I've had no information about it at all and was amazed at his EPQ presentation last week how articulate and knowledgeable he was about his topic. Proud mum!

MirandaWest · 19/03/2023 20:34

DD has exams at the end of June - year 12 do theirs after GCSE and A Levels are over. I think the Oxford open days are during her mocks but as she’s going down there next Sunday until Tuesday for a thing run by one of the colleges to encourage state schools to apply and then also going down there in April for a choral scholarship open day she’ll probably be OK with not going.
