Gosh @cheninblanc that must be so stressful and you can’t even look at clearing until you know! I can’t believe they can leave people hanging on like this. Keeping my fingers crossed for you

No but you can ring round unis your DD likes in clearing Chenin, jic. That’s what we’ve done and DD has been offered a place at Cardiff - obviously we can’t move forward until UCAS is updated with RHs offer but at least DD feels comfortable she has a back up.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/08/2022 13:07

So DS had one grade which we were genuinely surprised about and while it doesn't matter to university place, DS thinks something has gone a bit awry with the marking. However, he is absolutely convince that if you asked for a copy of the marked scripts then you cannot appeal afterwards? Is this correct? Surely that's the whole point of asking for them?

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2022 13:12

I have done a little bit of analysis on grade movements. Can't find any grade statistics for AQA, but Edexcel Maths was roughly halfway between 2019 and 2021, but on the mean side, OCR Physics was very generous, much closer to 2021 than 2019. That explains our surprise A* for Physics! Although I can't find the data for AQA, the PE grade boundaries were very close to my predictions - I was spot on for A star, and A was less than 1% lower than I expected. I wonder if Ladbrokes take bets on grade boundaries.....

Thinking of everyone still waiting for unis to make decisions: Hopefully really soon!

Zebracat · 18/08/2022 13:28

@Monkey2001 Don’t know, but there must be a way to monetise that ability!

Congratulations on the great offers today!

DD missed her Biology grade but has been offered Environmental Geoscience instead of Environmental Science at Southampton (her first choice). If she declines Cardiff (insurance) have firmed her. She doesn't want to do geoscience and has gone off the course at Cardiff so she's very despondent and not sure what to do. She missed paper 3 in biology due to covid and paper 2 want awry - she was unable room with people with extra time and the invigilator put the time on the board for them but DD was unaware. Invigilator said to put in complaint but school have advised it wasn't allowed as didn't meet the criteria.

Zebracat · 18/08/2022 13:34

I’m so tired. Can’t stop yawning.she is out doing pizza and escape rooms, and we are going to our favourite restaurant tonight. I might just slide off for a nap.
I did email our MP about our troubles with Student Finance, and they have come back and seem happy to help. I’ve also asked the Uni for suggestions. So feeling more hopeful there. We will find a way

crazycrofter · 18/08/2022 13:47

That’s a bit of a conundrum @mummabear74 . Is there anything else in clearing she might like?

I’m just having a slight feeling of regret, having seen the results achieved at DD’s old school. It’s a selective girls school and 66% of the grades were A and 91% A-A. I know dd would have got her A in history there as she’d have worked harder - she worked much harder in years 10-11 than in sixth form! But I guess she needs to find her own work ethic and she knows she could have done more… Not that it matters at all now.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/08/2022 13:51

That's interesting @Monkey2001 I have done similar for DS subjects and from what I can see its
2022 2021 2019
OCR Eng lit 91% 90% 94% A*
85% 82% 89% A
72% 70% 78% B

Edexcel Bio B 62% 59% 66% A*
49% 47% 56% A
41% 37% 47% B

Edexcel History 84% 62% 85% A*
76% 55% 78% A
63% 46% 67% B

I have used winter series grade boundaries for 2021.

One of these things is not like the others.....

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/08/2022 13:52

Oh poop, the formatting went a bit wrong but perhaps still understandable?

You must be totally thrilled. Well done to your Dc for not believing what others said about him. 👏👏👏

Decorhate · 18/08/2022 13:54

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn You need to ask for a copy rather than the original, then you can decide if you want to go for a remark.

KingscoteStaff · 18/08/2022 13:57

Brilliant @Comefromaway.

Another fan of Sheffield here @Benjispruce4

Well done your dude @ZandathePanda

DS got AAB, up from CCU in Y12 and BCD in mocks 🌟
I will move on shortly but I am thinking a bit about his teachers who wouldn't predict anything higher than a C in physics and biology..

Keep your chins up those of you still fighting for your DC 💪

Great news @singingstones you had the faith even if they didn't

@crazycrofter she's feeling totally overwhelmed. Suffers with anxiety so would need to visit first to get a feel of the layout, proximity of halls etc.

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2022 14:14

I have started a bit of a row on Birmingham parents' FB but literally NO ONE thinks the same thing as another person about their new accommodation system and people wading in whose children are in years 2 and 3 is NOT HELPFUL. Am going to c and p their post to see if you agree that we should hear about a 'time slot' today...(although those who have say it keeps crashing)

We have made some changes to the way our accommodation is allocated for September 2022.
We have emailed our offer holders, but thought we'd share it with parents and guardians too to ensure the message is received.
For students who have completed their accommodation application by the Guarantee Scheme deadline (30 June for UK students and 31 July for international students), once their place to study at the University of Birmingham has been confirmed, the accommodation team will send information on how to book accommodation on Results Day (18 August).
So students need to keep an eye on their emails from us!
The email will give an allocated time window with a link to the accommodation portal to log on and book a room. Everyone will have an equal opportunity to pick the room which suits the best but it means booking a room is simple and students will have full control.
Students will also be able to update their profile with information about themselves to share and help find like-minded students to live with.

Northumberlandlass · 18/08/2022 14:34

Hmm @Piggywaspushed I read that as the accommodation team will send the email to students today (18 Aug) but it is REALLY unclear whether the time window will be on the 18th…

Volterra · 18/08/2022 14:38

@cheninblanc so sorry to hear that. I know of 2 people who has similar situations and both came good in the end, really hope there is good news soon.

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee DD and friend here and asked if they know anything about music. They said for halls to look at Aberdare as is by the music library and it's nice. It is women only but felt that visiting partners aren't an issue in reality.

That is great news @Comefromaway !

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2022 14:39

@mummabear74 is there much commonality of the first year of the 2 courses? Sometimes courses have the same/similar first year and then branch out. So it may be that she can make Environmental Geoscience look a lot like Environmental Science.

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I was looking at grade statistics, which is the way OFQUAL were transitioning from the inflated 2021 grades back to normal. Grade boundaries can be all over the place in a normal year as difficulty changes. I will do my table for some of your subjects.

singingstones · 18/08/2022 14:39

Yes, definitely Piggy they will email today with a time when he can log on and book his room.
But I thought he had already made his choices months ago?

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2022 14:40

Glad you think it's confusing too lass!

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2022 14:41

He did singing but then they upped and changed their system.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 18/08/2022 14:42

Dd is adamant to take the Cardiff place now. I've made her apply to Sussex course just incase, over next 24 hours she has to decide what's more important course content or distance to home.
My personal view is that she will thrive at Cardiff as the course is what she wants. They were so friendly and supportive. That will help her mental health. It is a bit further away, but then again Sussex is still 1 hour and half away. She'll be busy anyhow , whereever she goes and miss boyfriend.

I won't go into too much detail but DH being a bit of an arse about it . I've grassed him up to his Mum though.
