Thread 35 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 'What They Did on Their Summer Holidays'

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/07/2022 11:57

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

@icanbewhatiwant it’s that damn predictive text and using a mobile. I know what I’ve keyed in but what’s been typed is quite a different thing.

icanbewhatiwant · 03/08/2022 08:56

I usually read it through a couple of times before I press post. I obviously didn't that time. I've sent some interesting words in texts before. So now I try to read through first especially on here or where lots are reading.

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 08:59

I do too but often press send too quickly. Wish there was an edit feature.

ealingwestmum · 03/08/2022 09:33

Hehe ican, though the predictive wasn’t far wrong in its literal sense!

Oblomov22 · 03/08/2022 10:53

Loving icanbe's Dh's wash. Grin

MirandaWest · 03/08/2022 11:14

I laughed at the precautionary wash too 😄

EwwSprouts · 03/08/2022 14:26

@Wheresthebeach I hope she recovers well & can return to elite level performance.

@Monkey2001 I hope you are getting regular updates and he is improving. My colleague was off for 2 weeks with an upper respiratory tract infection and he was warned there is a bad one going around where average recovery is 3-4 weeks. Hopefully your DS being younger & no doubt fitter will fare better.

We moved here 4 years ago and had 19 years worth of 'we might need it someday' stored in a double garage. We did get rid of a lot but still have a loft full which is not great as we're thinking about a loft conversion.

mango0 · 03/08/2022 18:53

Just checking in.
Sorry to hear of your dd's injury @Wheresthebeach i hope she dealing with the implications as best she can.

I hope you ds is home and on the mend soon @Monkey2001

I hope everyone else is okay.

Dd received a letter from school over the weekend with the plans for results day. They can go and collect their results anytime between 8.15 and 11. I think we'll be 8.15! I can't believe it's only a fortnight tomorrow. We're pretty busy as well so I think it's going fly by.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 03/08/2022 20:20

DH called the GP surgery to ask whether DD has had all meningitis vaccine (she had single jabs MMR, and I think she then had the combined booster some years later, after there was a measles outbreak locally, but need to check if that’s all she needs).

I googled men. B vaccines last night, and the cheapest I could find was £109 per jab. Bit annoying, given that the vaccination programme is going to be extended to teens in the very near future, apparently.

DD finally had her DSA assessment online this morning. DH and I sat in with her and it lasted over 2 hours.
The recommendations made are fantastic - 32 hours of study skills mentoring, 32 hours of specialist mentor support, laptop, extra monitor, dictation software, text to speech software, essay writing software, mind mapping software, plus all the usual reasonable adjustments for exams, and also en-suite accommodation.

Stupid question but if it’s agreed by her first choice uni but she ends up somewhere else, will she then have to wait for that uni to approve it all? My worry is that it won’t be in place for the start of term if there’s any change of plan.

DS went in to book his eye test today as it was due and the receptionist told him he was just in time as you have to pay from your 19th birthday onwards regardless of whether you are in full time education. So of anyone's DC are due one make sure they do it before their birthday.

Piggywaspushed · 03/08/2022 20:29

Yes, DS had his yesterday! Specsavers: completely free! Glasses up to £89 included.

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 20:32

Glasses up to £89 included in what @Piggywaspushed ? Sorry, am I being stupid? I need my eyes testing.

Piggywaspushed · 03/08/2022 20:39

You get a voucher and that includes their frames up to £89 so if he had chosen £100 frames he'd pay £11 for example. Originally he picked £49 glasses and they sent him back to look at the better ones....

Think you might be a bit old benji...

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 20:48

Oh I see(or not), only if you’re under 19? 😁

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 20:49

DD doesn’t wear glasses but I do so was hoping I could upgrade my £5 readers! Never mind.

272Newnames · 03/08/2022 20:58

Trying to sort Meningitis B vaccine here too. Very little availability locally and he needs 4 weeks between the two doses. He is working so much or on holiday for most of the rest of the holidays so will be tricky to sort. That is if he agrees to have it, I have sent him info and suggested it but he keeps not responding to me and is currently working nights so difficult to catch in person.

I took DD & DS a few years ago for the Men B vaccine to Boots (you can get advantage points). Agree that it’s pricey and really hope they roll it out further in the future to teenagers.

DD back from Europe and told me she wasn’t homesick at all so that’s good!

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 03/08/2022 21:41

Ahh @Paddington glad she had a nice time.

Or if like me your prescription is stronger than -10. Or if you work at a computer your employer should pay I think (mine does but as mine's free anyway I don't claim).

My glasses cost £££ and so do my contact lenses so every little helps.

If they don't have any/much income they can apply for a discount on glasses/dentists/prescriptions. Look up form HC1. I think it's quite hard to get, and it's best to apply from their uni address. Might be worth a go.

crazycrofter · 03/08/2022 22:01

Dd is back from Cornwall and has already complained about the lack of food and ice cream in the house! I didn’t miss her food fussiness when she’s away …

Ds is away and not answering mine or dh’s texts but he deigned to reply ‘decent’ when dd texted him to ask him how it was. I think the lack of contact means he’s busy! He had too much time on his hands at the NCS camp and he let me know how rubbish it was!

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 22:12

Yea @crazycrofter when DD1 was quiet at uni I knew she was happy/busy. For that reason I would answer the phone with trepidation as it was rarely a good reason!

Volterra · 04/08/2022 06:45

I've woken up quite excited that a week till moving day- then realised that means 2 weeks till results. Where has the time gone!!

Benjispruce4 · 04/08/2022 07:14

I know @Volterra! it seemed ages off but DD said same yesterday. I just don’t know what to think as she said yesterday she now has no idea whether she has got As or Ds!😫

Volterra · 04/08/2022 07:25

I think having not gone through it before it’s really hard for them to tell . Fingers crossed for them all. I’m going to get the passport, GCSE certificates and student finance together today and I think will bring them with me rather than on the lorry .
