OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 21/01/2022 14:21

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I hope one day they provide it for boys as they do girls whilst at school. Will also be considering the Men jab - can’t remember which type is needed but the one that is prevalent with uni aged students

Zebracat · 29/01/2022 11:59

Sniggering over @Horace123s anal warts now. She’s shown me some work this am, and the improvement is extraordinary. Apparently I am now a voice in her head saying less is more, what’s the what for, etc etc. Dontknow if that’s worse or better than an imaginary headmaster reading it out.
The party went well. It was small but not especially civilised. They were all doing shots except our girl who sipped a cider. She’s seen too much of the damage done to enjoy excess drinking.

Monkey2001 · 29/01/2022 12:25

@Horace123 oh no!!!!Blush

Monkey2001 · 29/01/2022 12:28

Congratulations @sofakingcool!

crazycrofter · 29/01/2022 13:13

@Horace123 that’s hilarious! Grin

Well done to ds on the Cardiff offer @sofakingcool!

Glad dd had a good time at the party @Zebracat

@Piggywaspushed are Bath saying no offer days in person for any subject or just for ds’ course? Still no offer here anyway, I’m hoping she’ll love Southampton in a couple of weeks, as that’s currently my favourite, weighing up cost/distance/friends going there!

Fferny1 · 29/01/2022 13:23

My toes are curling up in embarrassment for you @Horace 🤭
DS seems pretty enthusiastic to do the Aberystwyth Scholarship exam but I'm beginning to think it might not be a good idea. If he got an unconditional I think he may just stop working. As a master procrastinator ( pretty bad ADHD) he's never really been able to apply himself or work really hard and I think he needs to learn that. Plus he has the chance to develop better habits now he's on medication. Though he forgot to take it yesterday and said he kept on nearly falling asleep all day. He literally acts like he's got narcolepsy but it isn't, just bad ADHD. It's amazing he's ever passed any exam 😂.He has however got a pretty good brain that i would like him to use.

Piggywaspushed · 29/01/2022 13:30

It seemed to be a general thing crazy. You can still do visit days.

When DS did Aber exam, it wasn't an unconditional . It was reduced grades so he got offered CCD iirc.

crazycrofter · 29/01/2022 13:32

@Fferny1 is he on the medication that builds up gradually or the short release type? Ds’ psychiatrist left at the end of 2020 and apparently he’s now on nobody’s list. He doesn’t really like the short release pills, they make him depressed, but they are effective so he’s been using them for exams. But when we saw a stand in doctor before Christmas she told me off and said he can’t do that. She was supposed to be coming back to me but I’ve heard nothing and ds only has a few pills prescribed in 2020 left. I’ve tried ringing twice this week to no avail, I really want him to try the sort that builds up slowly. He is also a terrible procrastinator!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/01/2022 13:37

Oh @Horace123 that’s so funny! 😂 I feel your cringe.

DS2 has had two HPV jabs at school, the latest one was this week just gone. I would like DS1 to have it also but didn’t know he could. I might look it up and see if he is willing.

Fferny1 · 29/01/2022 13:45

@crazycrofter Ds is on the Slow Release ones - Elvanse, on a pretty high dose.
The medication is released slowly over a period of time so you don't get the sudden rise and abrupt drop that can make you bad tempered & like an addict without a fix😁 We've had him diagnosed at a private clinic as the Nhs waiting list was too long here. He is the third of mine to be diagnosed at this clinic after undiagnosed ADHD caused severe anxiety & depression With ds2.
Could you book into a private clinic for a medication review? Or was there ever a shared care agreement with your GP?
If there is then your Gp can prescribe medication on your behalf but not change it I think.

Fferny1 · 29/01/2022 13:55

Boots are doing the Boys hpv jabs at the moment. I think they can only be given up to the early twenties apparently. I'm definitely going to get ds1 vaccinated.
@Piggy did your ds end up going to Aberystwyth?

DoggerelBank · 29/01/2022 14:25

@Horace123 Fabulous!
Please do get all your kids jabbed with meningitis before uni if at all possible. My friend died of it aged 20 many moons ago, and it's on the rise at the moment, apparently.

DoggerelBank · 29/01/2022 14:26

Great news, @Sofakjngcool!

Fiddlersgreen · 29/01/2022 14:57

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn how old is your DS2?
I think my DS2 just missed out on it and think perhaps it’s the year below they started with

Horace123 · 29/01/2022 14:57

@DoggerelBank - agree re meningitis. I checked with our GP. Kids in year 13 hopefully all had the Men ACWY jabs as routine. They wouldn’t have had Men B which babies now get. GP said the ACWY is the one students must have.

crazycrofter · 29/01/2022 15:30

Thanks @Fferny1. There’s no shared agreement unfortunately, but maybe we should go private. We’re moving areas for sixth form and I was hoping he’d get allocated to a psychiatrist in the new area and we’d have better luck there. He rejected the slow release this time last year as he was worried about headaches as a side effect (he’s prone to them anyway). But recently he told me that his best friend, who’s like a clone of him, is on it and it helps him concentrate in class. Ds did say he didn’t really need to concentrate in class Shock and maybe he’ll scrape through his GCSEs without anything but I know sixth form is a whole different board game!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/01/2022 15:47

@Fiddlersgreen he’s 14 year 9.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/01/2022 15:54

😮 I was not expecting it to cost that!

ExtremelyDetermined · 29/01/2022 15:58

We had Men B and HPV done privately for DS (and the Men B for DD) a few years ago. Got it done at Boots - it's expensive but you get a lot of Advantage points.

icanbewhatiwant · 29/01/2022 16:11

I just googled HPV as I didn't even know boys could have the vaccine. It says it's routinely offered to boys born after 2006. The MenAWCY was first given in ds1's year (he is third year uni)

Fiddlersgreen · 29/01/2022 16:13

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn

😮 I was not expecting it to cost that!
Wow that’s much more than I expected too! Ah yes my DS2 is year 10 so he just missed out
JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/01/2022 16:26

So your DS must be an older one in the year too then @Fiddlersgreen, what a shame he missed out on it - especially now we’ve seen the cost of doing it privately,

@ExtremelyDetermined I love your positive spin on the cost! 😄

Fiddlersgreen · 29/01/2022 16:32

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn no, annoyingly he’s one of the younger ones, June 2006.
I’ve just double checked and the vaccine was offered to boys born from 1st Sept 2006

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/01/2022 16:39

Oh no, how frustrating! I don’t think there has been a big take up of the vaccine in his year group, I think a lot of people assume it’s ‘only’ to prevent cervical cancers so why should the boys have it, but he was happy to have it after hearing about the vaccine first.

sofakingcool · 29/01/2022 17:06

Thanks for all the congratulations! That's all offers in now, so just to attend offer holder days and make a decision Confused
