previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Great offer Orange!

DoggerelBank · 19/01/2022 21:15

@Isthisjustnormal and @OrangeCinnamonCocktail Amazing news! Congratulations to your kids!
DS has two offers. Bristol ABB, which is very lucky, because this year they seem to have every state school in the country on contextual offers. It's AAA for private schools. Feels like we've gamed the system a bit, with DS having been at a private school years 7-11, but we had no idea his current school would be on the list! Still has to get A for chemistry, though, which is his hardest A level. Also a Leeds offer, but he's taken against Leeds for reasons I can't fathom, so is keen to see what other offers might come through.

I'm full of Covid at the moment, so sorry if I'm a bit incoherent. It's not too bad so far - just a stinking cold. It came back from DD's ski trip in Bulgaria, and she thinks it's Delta, so we still have Omicron to look forward to! We've been quite lucky to make it this far in a plague-free house, so we shouldn't complain.

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2022 21:21

Great news orange!

Hope you recover soon doggerel.

BlueMarigold · 19/01/2022 21:27

Great news @OrangeCinnamonCocktail and @Isthisjustnormal!

BlueMarigold · 19/01/2022 21:29

@DoggerelBank congratulations on the offers! I hope you feel better soon

AnneOfCleavage · 19/01/2022 21:30

Welcome Kiwi. I think we are the only mums of DD's looking at Primary School degrees on here. Where has your DD applied to and has she had any offers come in?

Thanks for the sugar tip Heifer will try that next time. I think I used too much lemon juice and perhaps caster sugar is not as good as perhaps granulated so will try that instead. Any excuse to make cake. Seems lots of you know of Mars and her infamous Lemon Drizzle cake. I've been here for a good 12yrs and not come across her I don't believe. Any chance Mars could post her recipe here?

Great result Isthisjustnormal well done to your DS.

What a fantastic offer Orange. Your DD must be so happy and can relax now.

Have now heard from Ox Brookes that DD has been offered a place - BCC which is great and what we hoped for so that will def be her insurance if she gets her first choice. She started this year so deflated that all her peers have had offers and not needing interviews and she had nothing as yet and now poof, after two weeks of gruelling interviews x 4 she's had all 4 offer a place. Just one left to go which is the biggie. Someone she met at Winchester Uni last week said she is also going to the same interview day at Chichester so they'll have a friendly face - if they even remember each other.

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2022 21:30

So busy commiserating, I didn't say congrats on the offer doggerel!

AnneOfCleavage · 19/01/2022 21:32

Cross posted with Doggerel - great offer from Bristol. Well done to your DS.
Sorry you've got Covid. Hope it's over soon. Have you lost your taste and smell?

singingstones · 19/01/2022 21:38

Great news Orange, Doggerel and Anne, lovely to see more offers coming in.

Monkey2001 · 19/01/2022 22:07

Lots of lovely news from Orange, Doggerel, AoC and isthisjust, well done all!

Hope you get through your Covid lightly @DoggerelBank. Was it your St Andrews DD who brought it back? Had she made it back for the start of term?

ealingwestmum · 19/01/2022 22:10

@singingstones

Great news Orange, Doggerel and Anne, lovely to see more offers coming in.
This is a good day at the office! Less so on the covid from Doggerel, hope you feel better soon.
DoggerelBank · 19/01/2022 22:17

@Monkey2001 Yes - last minute trip after medic ski trip to France was cancelled before Christmas. She was due to go up the day after she got home from skiing, but instead she tested positive and stayed home. But good news yesterday - she's excited to have made it through all the exams without having to retake anything! Just dissertation and OSCIs (??) left now before graduation. Hope your DS1's latest exam results were what he wanted. He's half way already!!!!

DoggerelBank · 19/01/2022 22:18

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone. It's really not too bad so far. Just a cold.

crazycrofter · 19/01/2022 22:42

Good offer from Bristol @DoggerelBank! Our dd has also somewhat gamed the system as she was in a private school for years 7-11 but the 3 unis that have given her contextual offers base them on home postcode and being currently at a state school. We didn’t do it on purpose though obviously, dd wanted to move schools (and money was an issue despite the bursary). The irony is, my ds could really do with a contextual offer when his time comes, and he’s never been in a private school, but we’re moving areas in the summer.

Glad the covid isn’t too bad so far, hope you’re over it soon.

kiwiandcherries · 19/01/2022 22:54

@Anne you are a bit further along the process than we are. Your DD must be so happy to have received offers from all four interviews. Very well done to her and good luck for the last one - is it face to face?
My DD has applied to Winchester, Gloucestershire, Oxford Brookes, Chester and Kingston. She has had two interviews this week and is preparing for another two. Still waiting to hear from the fifth after returning some additional forms that they sent out. Such a nerve wracking and intense time!

Fiddlersgreen · 19/01/2022 23:05

DS and I went through all his emails and logged into the various portals from the universities that have offered to him and we cannot find any offer holder dates.
I’m reassured that we haven’t missed anything but like someone else said, would have liked to go to some at half term!

Heifer · 19/01/2022 23:59

@Isthisjustnormal

Welcome *@kiwiandcherries, and ahhhh, mars' lemon drizzle recipe! I don't know if I still have it although it was my staple when the kids for little! @Heifer* fancy posting it for me??

@DoggerelBank glad to hear exam results were good.! DS said that he spent Tuesday morning anxiously waiting for an email, then somebody told him at lunchtime that they had been on Mysaint all day! He is still heading for a First, do was very happy.

Hope the dissertation is going well for your DD, I think that will be a challenge for DS as writing is not his thing!

Wheresthebeach · 20/01/2022 07:54

Congratulations doggerel fab offer.
Lovely to read all the good news.

AnneOfCleavage · 20/01/2022 07:59

Kiwi she's not that different to where DD is. Has she had Winchester and Ox Brookes interviews yet? Winchester was F2F but Ox Br was online and was so much easier.

Thanks so much for the recipe Heifer and to Mars too. Will try out the icing with icing sugar next time as that may be where I went wrong. I know I've done the crunchy topping right before but brain went to mush. I blame Covid and ahem, being a certain age.

Orange is your DD doing a particular subject degree first then considering a PGCE and then to working in secondary Ed? Sorry you may have said before but I can't remember.
Yes to Bogna site for Chichester. Been to a couple of open days there and loved it. Lovely being right on the coast too and the fact there's Butlins down the road for work experience if needed 😀 and yes it's F2F. Lots more prep to do this weekend as this is her first choice Uni. She had such a great rapport with the tutors at the open day last year and they also do a drama degree on that site and she can be part of shows etc for enrichment. That was a big draw. The Chichester site do dance so she has that too.

BlueMarigold · 20/01/2022 08:02

Has everyone who is applying this year got their UCAS application sent off now?

kiwiandcherries · 20/01/2022 08:11

@Anne we were in Winchester for the full day of interviews earlier this week and her Brookes interview is next week. Which is your DD's first choice Uni?
