previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Commiserations @sofakingcool. He will go to a different uni of course and it will be excellent for him and the right place where he will thrive. He'll look back on today and smile.

sofakingcool · 14/01/2022 17:50

Thanks all, he was holding out for Southampton so is feeling a bit deflated, but grateful for the offers he has received

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 14/01/2022 18:46

Just logging on quick to update that Dd has her interview / audition through for Southampton.

I am sorry though @sofakingcool he has some great Unis on his list.

Hattifatteners · 14/01/2022 18:49

Sorry for the Southampton rejection @sofaking. It is tough for the youngsters. DD was rejected by two of her choices on Monday, one being her favourite. Probably the first time in her life she has had to face a disappointment of this size.

Piggywaspushed · 14/01/2022 18:50

Checking in as well, so that I don't fall off thread. Sorry about Soton sofa and pleased to hear your news orange.

I'm getting a bit bored of waiting on Bath and Cambridge now... at least we know Cambridge is 25th I guess.

DS's very right wing friend got an offer at Oxford and another school acquaintance was rejected (very clever boy but it was Comp Sci). A girls I helped with her Oxford application got an offer for English so tha's nice.

Piggywaspushed · 14/01/2022 18:51

Oh that's a shame hatti Sad

ealingwestmum · 14/01/2022 19:06

Hatti I’m sorry to hear that. Is there one or more for your DD to hear back from still?

Sofa, as disappointing as Southampton news is, the offers he has I hope will get more attractive over the next few days.

Decorhate · 14/01/2022 19:16

Sorry to hear about the recent rejections. Fingers crossed they get some offers they are happy with.

Ds has shocked me by booking an offer holders day without any prompting from me. Though I think it’s the football match on in that city on the same day that is the main attraction!

cariadambyth · 14/01/2022 19:20

Sorry to hear about the rejections. Let’s hope for a relaxing weekend for all.

Hattifatteners · 14/01/2022 19:27

Thank you @Piggywaspushed and @ealingwestmum. Yes, DD is till waiting to hear from Nottingham and Bristol

BlueMarigold · 14/01/2022 19:41

Sorry to hear about the rejections @Hattifatteners and @sofakingcool. Hope you hear from the others soon

Fonty · 14/01/2022 19:44

Sorry to hear this Hatti. Hope you get good news from Notts & Bristol v soon.

22Newnames · 14/01/2022 22:02

Great EPQ result @Fruitygal!
Nothing from Durham here yet. Well he did get an email saying they are working on his application just before Xmas but nothing since.
Same from Warwick just before Xmas but nothing since. Nothing from Bath apart from the acknowledgment when his application went in.

Sorry to hear about the rejection from Southampton @sofakingcool. I am dreading DS getting rejections, I really don’t think he’s expecting any at all. But just having the grades is not necessarily enough at the places he has applied to.

22Newnames · 14/01/2022 22:04

Sorry to hear about the rejections @Hattifatteners. I am dreading the same happening to DS.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 14/01/2022 22:14

Hoping for better news for you both soon @Hattifatteners

Nard75 · 14/01/2022 22:20

Well done on the EPQ @Fruitygal. Sorry to hear about the rejections @sofakingcool and @Hattifatteners hopefully other offers will come in soon.

DS has had offers come in this week from Birmingham and Nottingham. Contextual offer from Birmingham 3 x A's. Still waiting for Warwick and Manchester. He will probably firm Warwick if offered and insurance Birmingham but we can never be too sure what he will do until he has made the decision.

Fruitygal · 14/01/2022 22:44

@sofakingcool and @Hattifatteners so sorry the DCs are experiencing rejections. My eldest a few years back got 2 offers snd 3 rejections initially. Then one of the unis who had rejected him changed their mind months later and offered him an interview and then an offer?! He was happy with the original 2 offers and rejected the uni - which he says was great fun 🤩

DD has very able friends who have been rejected from several economics courses and same with medicine. It’s a super tough time. Let’s hope they get some offers as my DS1 always says you only need one uni to say yes and once you get there it’ll be your favourite place x

Fruitygal · 14/01/2022 22:45

Thanks for your congratulations on the EPQ

Monkey2001 · 14/01/2022 23:24

Congrats on all your DD's achievements @Fruitygal. Funny to hear about the focused boys who don't want to waste their efforts on things that don't matter. Both mine considered the best scores in a music exam to be 120 or 130 because you didn't waste effort getting further over the grade boundaries! My DS has now dropped the EPQ because there is no point; my point that it develops great skills fell on deaf ears.

Interview for Newcastle went well today, lots of stuff he had prepared came up. It may still not be an offer as we are expecting fewer offers than usual this year, but he feels he did his best.

Isthisjustnormal · 15/01/2022 00:11

Congrats to your dd @Fruitygal - ds heard on his EPQ on Thursday too: he also got an A* :-) It's not hugely relevant to any of his choices unfortunately - but might come in handy if he drops a grade, I know York will look at it in that context.

Sorry to hear your news @Hattifatteners and @sofakingcool: it is a brutal process for them.

Still waiting on Warwick, Bath and Exeter (we've kind of crossed Cambridge off our mental list - ds is confident that will be a no) - all of which I know will be a while, but it is frustrating!

DS had his last mock today: nice supper tonight to celebrate!

Volterra · 15/01/2022 04:39

Sorry about the rejections Hattifattners, hope some offers come soon .

Monkey really pleased it went well and fingers crossed. It is so competitive this year isn’t it? DS said yesterday he knows of one Oxford offer at College, 3 years ago they had 6 which is roughly 10% of their cohort.

Congrats on the EPQ Fruitygal

DS is well aware UCAS deadline looming so hopefully will get his backside in gear and fill his final slots. Have suggested Southampton and Cardiff. His TMUA should hopefully get him a reduced Cardiff offer but is annoyingly 1 mark off the Southampton threshold. He’ll pretty definitely firm Bath so it’s the insurance that needs sorting. MAT was a complete disaster, less said about that the better 😀

Am hoping he will learn from the entrance exams that it’s all well and good turning up to class but you have to do practice papers.

Fruitygal · 15/01/2022 06:56

@Isthisjustnormal Congratulations on your DSs A* EPQ - I think York will look favourably on the EPQ - I know that DD got her reduced offer from them because of it but I understand not a their courses fo that. I have heard of others who were given a place on results day despite being one grade below their offer at York as they had the EPQ. (PPE in 2018).

DD was given an offer at Exeter back in November but again each course is different. So fingers crossed - a friend who works in a uni in the Midlands but used to work at Bath thinks the late unis will wait until after 7th Feb when government confirms whether exams are going ahead before giving majority of offers out.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 15/01/2022 08:06

Congrats on the EPQ result @Isthisjustnormal well done your DS.

Sorry to hear about rejections, especially from a preferred uni. We’re still waiting to hear from three and I’m pretty sure at least one will be a no. DS has made up his mind to firm Nottingham, we’re just waiting to see if there’s any offers lower that he can use as insurance (but I doubt it very much!).

cariadambyth · 15/01/2022 08:29

Fantastic to hear of EPQ success @Isthisjustnormal.
I’m glad your DS felt his interview went well @Monkey2001.
Hmmm, any thoughts on this one please… dd has had all her offers back now and had sort of been thinking Southampton firm, RH insurance however yesterday Bath Spa got in touch and changed her offer to unconditional. She’s now wondering about firming RH and putting Bath Spa as her insurance. We’ll go to offer holder days at them all. She’s midway through her mocks which she’s not feeling confident about so I think she’s clinging on to the idea of the unconditional taking all the pressure off. Sorry for such a garbled post but I would be really grateful for your thoughts. Southampton is a stretch by the way!!

singingstones · 15/01/2022 08:45

Which would she most like to go to? I think I'd put that as firm and Bath Spa insurance (if she's also happy to go to Bath Spa).

I guess that's the beauty of an U/C offer, you can afford to take a risk with the firm.
