previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Fantastic news Oblomov, congrats to him, that seems like a nice low offer for Durham so they must have been very impressed with his application.

Heifer I love your plan to have more fun. This process is so draining and makes it even harder than usual to remember our own needs.

EwwSprouts · 13/01/2022 08:56

@Oblomov22 Wow! Great news.

@Heifer It is hard but carving out some time for ourselves is essential to well-being. Hoping you have a lot of laughs at bowling.

Oblomov22 · 13/01/2022 08:56

Does anyone know if it's too late to change one of your choices on your application. How do you go about changing it?

Here's the ucas info, I don't think it's easy once 14 days have passed, unless he wants to keep the Uni but change the course

Very good news @Oblomov22 - looks like Durham has woken up finally.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 13/01/2022 09:21

That’s a brilliant offer, Oblomov!
I’m guessing it’s completely obtainable too, so very exciting.

Heifer · 13/01/2022 09:28

great news @Oblomov22 - a nice unexpected early offer :-)

NCTDN · 13/01/2022 09:35

Great news @Oblomov22 - that's where dd is waiting on. Is it the grades provided in the website? What's the course?

ealingwestmum · 13/01/2022 09:35

That is brilliant news Oblomov, well done to him!

Heifer, your post is so relatable. DD admitted how she had checked out of sixth form life, and would like it all over now. Pandemic mainly affecting how they all engaged at school, or lack of, resulting in people she once was able to go up and talk to, now strangers due to all the room restrictions/no-go areas.

The impact of 15 hours training per week disappearing, replaced by stop starts, recurring injuries etc naturally resulted in substantial weight gain and low esteem. It took a cholesterol check (it’s super high) and a very expensive steroid jab into her shoulder bone to make her slowly wake up from denial. Slowly slowly, I’m going to the gym with her early mornings before she gets back into the pool next week. I’m shattered myself from circa 2 hours sleep per night, but that’s another story…HRT is beckoning after 3 years of this nonsense, if I get a GP appt.

Fun. Laughter. Honest talks with friends. Refocusing on work. And most importantly - getting out of the house more!

estherfrewen · 13/01/2022 09:35

Great news @Oblomov22!

@Oblomov22 congratulations on the Durham offer! People are sometimes surprised to be contextual, every year there are medics who get contextual offers from Newcastle, even though they go to independent schools, because they have a central London postcode which has low progression to HE. I have not looked at how Durham define contextual.

You can't change choices now, that is why it is a good idea to leave done choices blank when subliming early. But with that offer, hopefully his other choices will become irrelevant!

BlueMarigold · 13/01/2022 10:12

I missed seeing @Oblomov22’s good news. Well done!

Oblomov22 · 13/01/2022 10:15

Please don't comment. There's clearly something wrong.

CaliforniaDrumming · 13/01/2022 10:15

Wonderful news @Oblomov22

Thanks for the welcome @Decorhate. I appear to be on two threads about unis 2022 now. I think I got confused.

I relate to everyone saying they need to take some time for themselves. 2021 was very hard for us ( reasons unrelated to DS uni). I went to the Tina Turner musical yesterday. I know, risky, but I just needed some inspiration to keep going ( also boosted and already had Omicron). It was fantastic; so exactly what I needed. Was so inspired and cheered by Tina's life story. Penniless abused wife at 44, a millionaire by 45 and still going strong at 80. I recommend it to anyone needing some glitz and glamour.

Zebracat · 13/01/2022 10:31

So relatable @Heifer. I’ve just booked some time away at a spa hotel with a friend. Feel worn out with worrying about others.
@Oblomov22 Hope you can sort out whatever it is.

Wheresthebeach · 13/01/2022 11:28

DD's teacher have completely changed their tune over exams now --- previously they were def TAGs, now they are all saying definitely exams.
Sigh.

DD isn't open to discussion about open days - everything on hold until mocks over. But now has decided Swansea her first choice - which is doing my head in. (Their course includes Polar and Tropical modules which both interest her).

ChristopherTracy · 13/01/2022 11:28

Just as we were humming along, DS managed not to turn up to a BTEC lesson today as he thought he was on A Level study leave. Please tell me other children do that sort of thing?

Fonty · 13/01/2022 11:31

Just found this thread. Please can I join? DS waiting for offers at the moment. Just had a quick look at TSR and there are a couple of people today who have received contextual offers from Durham..... Completely new to this process and have a feeling we're going to be in for a long wait.

Seeline · 13/01/2022 11:39

Welcome @Fonty! Where else has your DS applied, and for what subject? We're a friendly bunch here and between us we can find answers to most of the procedural questions. Things like will exams happen, and when will offers be made are a different matter though!

@ChristopherTracy - it's the sort of thing my DS would have done. DD seems to be more switched on..... so far Grin

Wheresthebeach · 13/01/2022 11:39

Welcome @Fonty. I do think those waiting for offers from the uni's that wait til March/April is hard. I get why those Uni's do it esp as some schools operate a 'sending in all at once in January' system, rather than a hit buttons as they are finalised.
