Thread 26 - Covid Cohort Hoping for a Stable, Successful 2022

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 04/01/2022 08:35

previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Oh I’m please your DS had a good time at the interview @AnneOfCleavage. Has it gone back up the list of preferences?

@icanbewhatiwant how did you avoid throttling him??? 🤣🤣

Fiddlersgreen · 11/01/2022 22:13

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail

That is funny *@Fiddlersgreen* - so he would have just gone where he was told to based upon his results ? Grin
Yes I guess so! It made me laugh but I did have to say that this was because he didn’t let me help with any part of the application!
mummabear74 · 11/01/2022 22:27

It's lovely to hear about the Oxford offers. Congratulations @ProggyMat @SandyBayley @Horace123.

icanbewhatiwant · 11/01/2022 22:30

I asked him if he was going to accept 2 of them. His reply was "I'm not going accept any" he loves winding me up. So I just ignored him. What else can I do? He's so different to ds1 who wanted guidance with everything.

Monkey2001 · 11/01/2022 22:52

Urgghh @icanbewhatiwant he sounds quite frustrating, but clearly a bright spark from things you have said. Hope he grows up soon and treats you more reasonably. Is he any more polite to his dad? Can you suggest a pizza or something to celebrate his offers on condition he shares his thoughts about them?

ExtremelyDetermined · 11/01/2022 23:01

Just popping in to offer huge congrats to the Oxford Three Flowers

Wheresthebeach · 11/01/2022 23:09

Congrats @SandyBayley. Fab all three have offers

22Newnames · 12/01/2022 01:43

Been away for a few days and about 300 new messages!!
So sorry to hear of your loss volterra, take care of yourself.

Well done to the Oxford offer holders. We are in the frustrating situation of knowing the three we have left to hear from, Bath, Warwick and Durham are all really late to offer for his subject. We have been told to expect April/May!!! Which is really frustrating.

I have asked DS to look at adding a final choice to the form but he doesn’t seem to have looked into any despite my prompting and giving him a few to look at which is really annoying but I can’t do everything for him 😬

Oblomov22 · 12/01/2022 06:29

Can I just ask : it's not normal to have such a high success rate for Oxford applicants is it? Not that I'd know but the rejection rate is high isn't it? We have done well. Is it because we are Jose Mourinho "Special"? Wink

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/01/2022 08:50

Congratulations Sandy fantastic news. Fingers crossed for the Cambridge students next.

DS has his last mock today, English Lit. Spent most of yesterday evening testing him on quotes. Seriously, I don't know how people remember page after page after page of quotes!

Monkey2001 · 12/01/2022 09:16

@Oblomov22 I am not sure whether it is true for all subjects, but in normal years for medicine Oxford shortlist quite brutally and have a fairly good offer to interview ratio, but Cambridge interview 80% of applicants and only make offers to 25% of the candidates they meet, some subjects gave better ratios, I think the worst are medicine, natural sciences and engineering. The DC of this thread have done very well for driving tests and for Oxford!

AnneOfCleavage · 12/01/2022 09:20

Yes it's definitely moved on up there Delphi and she really got on well with the other applicants. Think there was 2 lads interviewing in a sea of girls but neither were in DD's group.

Re Oxford, my DH said that some of the colleges were very boy heavy so he purposefully chose colleges with a more even split ratio. Winchester is the same but on the opposite spectrum as mainly girls apply for a primary teaching and so it's very girl heavy. One of the reasons she prefers the other Unis although she's got a lovely boyfriend since choosing these Unis so don't know if that is a factor anymore.

icanbewhatiwant that must be so frustrating after having your first DS so open to your help. It would have been a welcome surprise if it had been the other way around.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/01/2022 09:37

Glad her interview went well @AnneOfCleavage, sounds like a good day.

I have a possibly stupid question but I'm hoping one of you very wise ladies might know the answer. If you firm up an offer on UCAS, do all the other unis on your list get told?

Monkey2001 · 12/01/2022 09:42

When you choose your Firm and Insurance you reject all your other offers by default.

@AnneOfCleavage I meant to say that the

Monkey2001 · 12/01/2022 09:43

.... interview sounded great, much better than she feared. Hope she gets good news soon.

Oblomov22 · 12/01/2022 09:48

Thought so Monkey, we as a thread are well above par on both Oxford success and driving test success.

I would like to add to Popcorns question: Is the deadline date that decisions need to be made on firm and insurance are personal to each student? So I'm thinking that my ds with always late Durham will be one of the last?

Oblomov22 · 12/01/2022 09:51

How to make your replies
When your last decision comes in, we'll send an email as usual to say there's an update (or a letter advising you about replying).
Sign in to your application to make your replies.
You'll see the deadline you need to reply by.

Types of reply
These are the types of reply you can make.
Firm acceptance – this is your first choice.
If it's an unconditional offer, the place is yours! So that course provider will expect you as their student.
Or if it's conditional, the place is yours if you meet the offer conditions. So just in case you don't, you can pick a second offer as a backup – your insurance acceptance.
Insurance acceptance – the back-up choice to a conditional firm acceptance.
If you're choosing an insurance, go for something with lower offer conditions – make sure it's somewhere you'd still be happy to go to though.
That way, if your results are lower than expected, you might still meet the conditions at your insurance choice; then you'd have your place confirmed there.
Remember, you'll only attend your insurance choice course if you don't meet the conditions of your firm choice, but you do meet the conditions of your insurance. You can't choose between your firm and insurance when you get your results, so make sure you're happy with which is your firm and which is your insurance before you reply.

Decline – you'll need to decline any other offers you get.

However, if you decide you don't want to accept any of the offers, you can decline them all and add more courses in our Extra service. Alternatively, you can see what courses still have vacancies later on in our Clearing service.
You can only accept one firm choice and one insurance choice (if you choose to have one). You must decline all other offers.

Offer and reply combinations
Unconditional firm (UF) – You're in!
Conditional firm (CF) – You're in if you meet the conditions.
Conditional firm (CF) and conditional insurance (CI) – You've made a first and second choice – you'll be in at the first if you meet the conditions. If not, you might have met the conditions of the second – if so you'll be on that course instead.
Conditional firm (CF) and unconditional insurance (UI) – You've made a first and second choice – if you meet the conditions of the first you'll be on that course. If not, you'll definitely be on the second.

Reply dates
These are based on when we get the last decision in from your unis or colleges. Check your application to see your personal deadline.
If you receive your last decision on or before 19 May 2022, your reply date is 9 June 2022 (except if you're using Extra to find a place).
If you receive your last decision on or before 14 July 2022, your reply date is 21 July 2022 (including Extra choices).

Offers for courses with early start dates
If you want to accept a place on a course that starts before your reply date, you should contact the university or college concerned to discuss what to do.
If they give you an earlier deadline to reply, you should be aware that they may withdraw their offer if you do not accept it before their specified deadline.

Missed your deadline?
Your deadline to reply to your offers will have been set once you’ve heard back from all your chosen universities or colleges.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/01/2022 09:59

It's only the firm he wants to make, not an insurance. I assume though that the other unis will be informed based on the above. DS doesn't have an insurance everyone seems to want a fistful of As and A*s, even the ones I thought might be insurance possibilities. It would help if he wasn't restricting himself about the course so much.

Wheresthebeach · 12/01/2022 10:05

Thanks @Oblomov22. That's really useful. I need to check DD's UC offer to see if it has to be her first choice or not. If it can be her insurance then I'm really quite inclined towards that option!

Glad the interview went well @AnneOfCleavage. Fingers crossed.

icanbewhatiwant · 12/01/2022 10:07

To be fair to Ds. He's obviously not the same at school. All 3 teachers were pleased with him. They said what a great student he was and how he's a role model to other students. So at least he's only like this at home. He knows it winds me up, he has always enjoyed winding up myself, his siblings, even the dogs when he was younger.

Congrats on all the offers. I guess we will hear of dc's accepting offers soon. They don't need to accept for a while though do they? I don't know if there is any benefit to accepting now.

Oblomov22 · 12/01/2022 10:10

"You'll see the deadline you need to reply by."

Presumably, as some posters here already have all their offers, their deadline could be quite early?

Don't miss the deadline folks!!

Oblomov22 · 12/01/2022 10:12

"Your deadline to reply to your offers will have been set once you’ve heard back from all your chosen universities or colleges."

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/01/2022 10:35

@Oblomov22 thank you for the info.

Monkey2001 · 12/01/2022 10:41

Everyone has 9th June deadline UNLESS they don't have all decisions in by 19th May, which is unusual. If you don't reply by 9th June your offers are automatically rejected. Durham and co won't miss the May deadline.

Heifer · 12/01/2022 11:12

Has any of your DS/DS had this before? Just noticed this email in DDs school account.

Sorry we missed you DD,
We called you to have a quick chat and to see if you had any questions about ** University. But don’t worry, you'll have plenty of chances to speak to us and you can also explore opportunities to visit us here.

Best wishes,
** University

Of course they missed her - she is in school! She also NEVER answers her phone as she is a teenager! Even is she did look at her phone she wouldn't answer to an unreconised number. I can tell you if she had answered she would not have been impressed being caught out like that either. What were they thinking?? I've removed the name of the uni just in case but its 2 words.
