previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Happy Birthday @Monkey2001. Love the present!

crazycrofter · 09/01/2022 19:03

Happy birthday @Monkey2001, love the marzipan man! My kids had two whole weeks off the gym over Christmas, but the regime has started up again now!

Sorry to hear your bad news @Volterra. i hope things with your dad turn out to be better than you hoped.

cariadambyth · 09/01/2022 19:15

Happy birthday @Monkey2001.
Oh @Volterra, I’m so sorry to hear of the upset and worry you are experiencing. You are in my thoughts.

Fruitygal · 09/01/2022 19:44

In terms of uni stuff - DD has picked up a few things when we were in IKEA in October/ November. With my boys we did the IKEA shop, towels in Sainsbury’s and feather duvet in John Lewis.

DD had Oliver Bonas candles and fairy lights on the Christmas list. Plus other things on birthday list - like cushions, throw, prints etc

Fruitygal · 09/01/2022 19:50

@Volterra goodness this is a lot to deal with. Sending a hug - just been on phone to two friends today - also struggling with multiple upsets and sad news and difficult times at the same time. Sometime life feels so unfair. Have a glass of wine, and a good book to lose yourself in - if your DH is good, grab a hug and some TLC. We are thinking of you xx

AnneOfCleavage · 09/01/2022 20:08

Happy birthday Monkey 🎂

Sorry to hear your news Volterra and also sorry to hear of more positive tests happening on this thread.

Great news Delphi

DD is frantically preparing for two Uni interviews this week. One is 6 hours and she now doesn't even want to go to that Uni as it's putting her off. The paperwork needed to attend the interview is vast too and all real copies are required as well. She's starting to panic about what is expected of her and then mocks coming up too it's all becoming too much. She's just asked me to bring up some chocolate so will go and oblige.

Hope this next week goes well for everyone and look forward to hearing more offers and perhaps Oxford news too.

sazzy5 · 09/01/2022 20:14

@Volterra I’m so sorry you are having such a hard time, it is not easy with lack of visits and I’m sure lack of communication. Fingers crossed it is better than you think.
@Monkey2001 happy birthday, love the gym theme. My two are obsessed with the gym, the food consumption is driving me a bit mad though.
Still no interviews or offers for DS (I think I have another user name of hopeful). We are pretty sure he will be going through clearing.

Volterra · 09/01/2022 21:15

Thanks. He has pneumonia, my Stepmum hsd been called in.

Fiddlersgreen · 09/01/2022 21:22

@Volterra 💐 sorry to hear you’re going through such a hard time.

@AnneOfCleavage - 6 hours? Aurgh! Your poor dd. Best of luck to her-she may enjoy is more than she thinks she will.

Heifer · 10/01/2022 08:19

Belated bday wishes @Monkey2001 - Love the mazipan man (Iactually I hate mazipan but you know what I mean) :-)

Good luck to those having interview, offers, mocks, results this week.

Hope those poorly improve

ProggyMat · 10/01/2022 08:46

Thinking of you and your family @Volterra Flowers
Good luck to all those with interviews and mocks!
I’m keeping everything firmly crossed for those of us waiting for Oxford decisions tomorrow - one more sleep…

Wheresthebeach · 10/01/2022 09:10

@AnneOfCleavage - 6 hours? Yikes that's gruelling, especially on top of mocks. Chocolate sounds a good idea.

@Volterra - sorry to read your update. Sending more hugs.

Good luck to all the Oxford people. Fingers crossed for you.

Delphigirl · 10/01/2022 09:48

Oooh fingers crossed to all oxford people… 🤞🤞

Horace123 · 10/01/2022 10:12

@Volterra - sorry to hear your news, that is horrible. @Monkey2001 happy birthday for yesterday.

Good luck to all the Oxford applicants for tomorrow and good luck to all those in the midst of mocks ...

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/01/2022 11:22

Happy birthday @Monkey2001! Wine

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/01/2022 11:26

a 6 hour interview @AnneOfCleavage ? Flipping eck, that's a lot to ask of students, especially at this time of year with mocks etc! Hope you DD does well and stays calm.

DS has his Biology mock today and has been in a depression/negative mood about it all weekend. He has not done enough revision and is not listening to me at all when I'm trying to help focus his learning to what is the most effective tasks in the short time available. He's gone into school now looking like he's heading to the gallows. I feel very stressed. I'm going for a walk!

Monkey2001 · 10/01/2022 11:49

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I think that might be a consequence of no GCSEs, exams are an unknown quantity and they did not learn to prepare properly. Sorry to hear he is struggling, hope the paper is better than he fears.

AoC can your DD think of the 6 hours as being loads of time to show them who she really is and less random than half an hour with 1 or 2 people? It sounds like they have just gone from a F2F assessment day to an on line assessment day without thinking through how different it will be, so not very promising as a demonstration of creative transition to on line. But my DS had 1.5 hours Manchester interview and it was actually a presentation by the admin people about how the interview worked followed by lots of gaps and 5 x 7 minute actual interviews. It will not be full on throughout. One tip - DS got through 3 glasses of water during the interview, luckily he has a very strong bladder!

ChristopherTracy · 10/01/2022 11:56

Yes first 3 hour mock here too today. I'm worried (though DS says he isnt).

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/01/2022 12:35

Thanks @Monkey2001 Biology is the one he has the least confidence in and, you're right, he as never really learned to prepare properly even though I've tried my best to help - but what does mum know hey?

Good luck to your DS today @ChristopherTracy.

Shimy · 10/01/2022 12:42

Volterra Oh your poor DS! I missed all the updates further up and just now noticed lots of posts with commiserations and wondered what had happened. I wish him well and back to good health very soon. Glad to hear stepmom is on hand for support as well.obviously his health is the most important thing here but does school now and what will happen with missed lessons, mocks etc leading up to exam time ? Is there anything school will do to put his mind at rest that he won’t miss out a whole Yr?

Shimy · 10/01/2022 12:45

Re mocks: this is ds’s second week of mocks. He said human geography was not good but the rest were okay. Is anyone doing Maths? DS said Maths mock was terrible (he doesn’t do Maths) his friend who is top dog for Maths in his year couldn’t complete the paper, only did half. Just wondered wether this was similar at other schools.

Wheresthebeach · 10/01/2022 12:54

Fingers crossed Biology goes okay Just.
