Thread 25 - Covid Cohort - Christmas Trees, No Omicron Please!

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided, for anyone interested, they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I've poured myself a baileys.

Oblomov21 · 01/01/2022 14:51

Both ds's very tidy and I regularly hoovered their room. Now, I have a eufy. I didn't even get a big Christmas present other than a bottle of baileys from Ds1 and a bar of cadburys wholenut Ds2 because I'd had summer eufy.

Saying that I stripped ds2's bed and the White Mattress protector was yellowy and made me heave, so my Christmas present to myself was 2 x single and 1 x king Costco mattress and pillow protectors. How sad is that?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 01/01/2022 15:18

Happy new year everyone! We were out last night but I stayed sober as the designated driver (I volunteered to be fair) had a lovely evening and we’re home by 12.45. DS1 got home after 4am and had not been responding to any messages or phone calls, as you can imagine things are a bit tense today. 🤔

Zebracat · 01/01/2022 15:48

Might have a baileys too. What is a eufy?

Oblomov21 · 01/01/2022 15:56

Zebra, robotic hoover.
You set it, it hoovers downstairs. Move it upstairs, it does upstairs.

@Zebracat the at home test ds1 ordered arrived quickly, next working day. But it was waiting for results that took ages. He posted back Tuesday afternoon, results came on the Sunday night. He needed to see a gp but they wouldn't see him without negative pcr. But a friend sent her one off a couple of weeks previously, she had a text back the same day as she posted it. So it must depend how busy they are. I did wonder whether positive tests get processed quicker too as hers was positive. Ds's was negative.

I had to google eufy.

icanbewhatiwant · 01/01/2022 17:54

I just reminded Ds about getting his room tidy. He replied with he doesn't have time. He needs to do his EPQ. I can't believe it's not finished yet. Then he said he's not really going to bother to do it well. He says Sussex have already made the offer and didn't mention EPQ so no point in getting a good grade. He said as long as he gets a C. I give up. No point in arguing.

crazycrofter · 01/01/2022 18:33

Oh dear @icanbewhatiwant, he sounds like ds! He’s only concentrating on particular GCSE subjects and is quite happy with a 4 in the others! Currently he’s still xboxing, having been awake for 27 hours! I heard him say he’ll need to go to bed at 12!

icanbewhatiwant · 01/01/2022 18:40

@crazycrofter I like to be quite organised...so I find him frustrating. But I'm sure his laid back attitude will get him far. I'm a stress head. Yes mine will be gaming too. He often has his Xbox going with a fifa match while he's doing homework. Ds2 has said exactly the same about staying awake all night too as he'd been gaming till the early hours, then sleeping all day. Though he got himself up at 8am yesterday morn. He can't stay awake 12 hours so was asleep by 8pm. Then up again early this morn. So I'll make sure he keeps that routine up ready for school.

crazycrofter · 01/01/2022 21:06

Ds is just going to bed after 30 hours up! Let’s hope he doesn’t feel dreadful tomorrow. I do think being laid back is a good thing though…

icanbewhatiwant · 01/01/2022 22:07

@crazycrofter yes definitely a good thing.

Isthisjustnormal · 02/01/2022 08:36

Lovely New Year’s Day yesterday: long walk with the family then Spider-Man at the cinema.
Ds is not tidy, but both of mine are in charge of their own rooms.
@Oblomov21: would you recommend the eufy? I’ve toyed with buying a robovav before…

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/01/2022 10:03

I see face masks are back in classrooms now. I ordered a load more on Amazon early hours before they sell out.

I have a Eufy. I bought it when there was that big thread on MN about a year or so ago when everyone raved about them. Mine is a pain as it loves to get stuck on things and never seems to clean everywhere - DH hates it and thinks its useless. It's OK, it serves a purpose if you want to just leave it go around a space for a bit while you do something else and if you have a nice square room without lots of things in the way. Ours is in the open plan living and kitchen and just bumps into everything sending it away from where you need it. Grin

Monkey2001 · 02/01/2022 10:09

I would love a robot vacuum which works. I got one from Aldi years ago and it sort of worked but the battery died. Have they improved a lot? Are there any that are good at stairs?

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2022 10:13

Does your house have to be tidy for a robot vacuum?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/01/2022 10:38

Mine does Piggy, well, in as much as no socks on the floor on other things that might get 'collected', no loose or trailing wires or chargers, nothing with a small ledge that it likes to get itself half on to never able to free itself...

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/01/2022 10:41

@Monkey2001 they don't do stairs.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/01/2022 10:42

I think the original Roomba is probably the best but I don't want to waste that sort of money on a hoover. Dyson have one for £800 too.

singingstones · 02/01/2022 11:11

From what I've heard (from DH's stepmum) they're great for large expanses of flat floor but wouldn't work so well in our house which has small rooms and steps everywhere.

mummyinbeds · 02/01/2022 11:18

Happy Birthday @Alsoplayspiccolo Hope you're feeling well enough to celebrate

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2022 11:58

Oh yes ,Happy Birthday !

Was there someone else too?

ChristopherTracy · 02/01/2022 11:58

HNY all am currently sat on DS' bed while he does some maths revision. Apparently he can only revise with me here. I had put today aside for some urgent house stuff!

Monkey2001 · 02/01/2022 12:07

Happy Birthday @Alsoplayspiccolo, hope you are feeling a bit better. 🎉🎂🎁

AnneOfCleavage · 02/01/2022 12:57

Happy New Year to all you lovelies. Can't believe another thread has practically filled up already. I've been awol for some time so sorry not not know all the up to date stuff.

DD has her first Uni interview on Wednesday and knuckled down to do some preparation last night - been reminding her gently about it. Her boyfriend only left NYE so she's done nothing the whole holiday break so far. He nearly didn't make it home as the trains were striking but DH managed to sort out a convoluted journey home for him which resulted in a 5 mile walk home at the other end as no taxis 😲
She is meant to be also starting her History coursework this term which I think is ridiculously late but that's how they do it at her school.
I'm not sure how the interview will go as it's the first of 5 but it's a Uni she's not sure she wants to go to anyway but they are so organised and helpful that she is swayed by that so wants to make a good impression and gain valuable insights into what they are after so she does well on her favourite Uni which is her last one of 5 in a row. They all fall on her busiest school days so lots of catching up required on missed lesson content.

singingstones · 02/01/2022 13:01

Happy birthday Also CakeThanks
Hope you are on the road to recovery and can enjoy your day.
