Thread 25 - Covid Cohort - Christmas Trees, No Omicron Please!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/12/2021 17:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided, for anyone interested, they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Oh Piccolo that is an unlucky run. Take it very easy.

We're just here on the sofa tonight. Been in London for the last 48 hours for DS's sport. Have to say we were astounded at the lack of mask wearing in shops etc. Decided not to venture into central London or use the tube.

singingstones · 31/12/2021 22:36

Pretty rock n roll here tonight - DH is in the bath and I am watching Netflix. DD and friends are downstairs on the fruity ciders 🙄
DS is out at a house party.
Roll on 2am when all the revellers are going home whether they like it or not. They're very nice but a bit loud - DH was just tutting "they're like a bunch of toddlers"! Turns out one is a v good pianist though.

Shimy · 31/12/2021 22:45

We’re having a quiet one at home. Prosecco chilling in the fridge whilst watching our church new Yr service virtually.

Happy new Yr in advance to all you lovely ladies, you’ve been such a great support and pray the new Yr brings everything we all hope for.

@Alsoplayspiccolo Hope you getwell soon.

mummyinbeds · 31/12/2021 23:07

Sorry to hear you're feeling unwell @Alsoplayspiccolo DS also got his positive PCR back 🙁

He's gone quiet - his friends have all gone out and he's confined to his room with nobody on the Xbox to shout with. I asked if he wanted to video message to downstairs but he just grunted.

Happy New Year to you all

20newnames · 01/01/2022 01:07

Happy Nee Year to everyone! We had a couple of friends round for an impromptu quiet evening. It was calm and lovely.

DH and I are meant to be going away next weekend so very much hoping the DC who are both at parties and staying out don’t bring covid home. 🤞🤞

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 01/01/2022 01:17

Happy New Year All..I think it was.August 18 when I first started these threads. I can't quite believe how much.has happened since then. Our kids have basically spent their maturing adolescent years in a Pandemic Confused

This is their year !

Just seen a throw back on Jules Holland from 2003/4. I was in labour with DS when I watched that the first time. New Year's Eve has been a strange time ever since.

ealingwestmum · 01/01/2022 01:45

I took myself off social media to give myself a short break but have been reading the whole thread, ups and downs.

Happy new year to you all….Orange: I’m with you, this year is surely their year!

BlueMarigold · 01/01/2022 08:39

Happy New Year everyone!

DD has mocks literally on as school restarts. She’s accepted her firm (Birmingham) and insurance (Lincoln) on UCAS, booked accommodation at both and now just focusing on her exams. 2022 is going to be a whole new adventure.

icanbewhatiwant · 01/01/2022 09:21

@BlueMarigold that was quick with accommodation. Ds1 didn't have to put his accommodation choices until about May and only for his firm. He had to put top 10 choices and was given number 7 just after results day. So he wasn't happy. But worked out ok in the end. That's good you've got it out the way already.

I hope everyone's evening went well. I was a bit worried about ds1 getting from his nightclub to his house in Norwich as he couldn't book a taxi. It's about 45 mins or so walk. He did message to say they found a taxi at 3am. I think it's probably better when he's living in Norwich and I don't know what he's up to. But as he left from home I obviously knew more this time. Ds2 was asleep at midnight as was DH. I was awake in bed, tempted to put the tv on as I couldn't sleep. I had a really bad nights sleep, so I feel really tired. I'm going out in the wind to walk the dogs in a minute. That'll wake me up.

Lovely news @BlueMarigold! It's all so exciting, even just the thought of them leaving compulsory education!

Is accommodation booking open at Birmingham?? Panicking now! We are nowhere near making a decision!

Volterra · 01/01/2022 09:36

Happy New Year to you all.

BlueMarigold · 01/01/2022 09:43

@Volterra I am so sorry… when I said she’s booked it I meant she’s made some choices.

The accommodation deadline is in May but just wanted to get stuff out of the way so she can focus on exams now. The actual accommodation is allocated after results day but she was able to put in 6 choices.

I didn’t think she would be allowed to choose accommodation for her insurance but she was sent a link asking her to choose some options so she did that too.

BlueMarigold · 01/01/2022 09:44

@Piggywaspushed sorry tagged Volterra by mistake. That last apology was for you. I am still a bit hungover and not with it at all

Decorhate · 01/01/2022 09:55

@mummyinbeds Every year my mother reminisces about heading off to hospital in a taxi & passing NYE revellers!

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2022 09:57

Ah, OK, phew! I was having NTU flashbacks there. Their accommodation booking is a bunfight.

If yous till aren't fully decided on Lincoln, can I recommend Valentine Court? It is really nice, a bit cheaper than the fancy ones nearer the uni and they have washing machines! It is also near Morrisons. I think they may have nudged the prices up a bit mind. It also ahs car parking.

BlueMarigold · 01/01/2022 10:04

@Piggywaspushed thanks I think she put Valentine courts as one of her options.

EwwSprouts · 01/01/2022 11:09

Happy New Year to one and all!

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail Yes to it being their year. Hoping for brighter times for everyone.

Monkey2001 · 01/01/2022 11:52

Happy New Year lovely ladies!

I hope 2022 brings good health, lots more offers from favourite choices to this thread and that we get certainty soon on whether or not our poor DC who have had to deal with so much uncertainty will be doing "proper" exams.

Congratulations @BlueMarigold DD on being the first to have decisions all made!

crazycrofter · 01/01/2022 13:16

Congratulations to @BlueMarigold dd and welcome to Birmingham- hope she makes it, she’ll love it here! We’ve Southampton and York offer days booked in for mid Feb/early Mar and waiting for an email from Nottingham. Manchester don’t seem to be doing them. I’m wondering how late Bath will be in getting back to dd? She could do with seeing all options in a fairly short time frame to compare.

I told ds that he’ll have to be up to go to church with us tomorrow at 9.30, which could be problematic given he’s been staying up with friends on Xbox til the morning and sleeping all day! He decided the best way to fix his sleep pattern is to stay up all night and all day! So he’s been awake since 3.30pm yesterday! He’s done this before and I’m sure it will work but I would feel ill!

crazycrofter · 01/01/2022 13:16

Sorry - happy new year!!!

Oblomov21 · 01/01/2022 14:34

Happy New Year. Couldn't believe how much fireworks there was. We had Costco curry and duck in pancakes. I was in bed by 11.
We've done nothing other than sleep and watch football this holiday, as we are now New Year's Day, as I roast a leg of lamb. Ds's watched Spider-Man, took them to coral reef water slides yesterday which I loved, then Ds2 did bowling and laser quest.

We are totally relaxed. Ds's were very tired, I noticed. I've barely got out of my dressing gown. I start my new job - 4 days, in a couple of days, and still my old one - 2 days, stupidly working 6 days a week. Dh has made me promise to review at the end of Jan.

Ds's both had fab school reports. I'm so glad I'm having an easy ride with them, for a long time now, both thriving and happy. Ds1 seems completely calm about February mocks. He says they are starting revising in class immediately this week.

Let's hope all our January's are calm.

Zebracat · 01/01/2022 14:35

Happy New Year everybody. Just booked a PCR test for Dd. It’s an at home one, no walk ins available. Does anyone know how long they take to arrive? she’s really coughing. I just wanted her to get into school on Wednesday with everyone else. They are so pissy about attendance even in these times and her asthma was out of control for most of last term, so hers looks poor.
I’m kind of itching to get the decorations down and life back to near normal.. The house is full of stuff. And the weather has been so grey and mucky and we have dogs. So it’s all a bit dirty and grim. I have washed all the floors but I’m ready for a proper spring clean. These are not normal sentiments for me, generally I would rather read a book.
